In evaluating the National Draft and what it has to offer - I feel we have got a number of players whom can or are able to be developed to run through our midfield, they are: Bail, Bartram, Bell, Bennell, Blease, Bruce, Buckley, Cheney, Davey, Dunn, Green, Grimes, Jetta, Jones, Maric, McDonald, Moloney(sorry Beamer), Petterd, Strauss, Sylvia, Wonaeamirri & Rookies- McKenzie,Healey and Valenti.

With the strong view that our first two picks will be spent on midfielders- Scully, Trengrove and or Morabito this would give us 26 PLAYERS to whom we can develop a strong midfield/wing with others such as Morton,McNamara & Garland with flankers to come from- Green, Blease, Jetta, Maric, Davey, Petterd, Sylvia & Wona ,all can (as stated run through the guts) - I feel we need to concentrate our next picks on talls and even try to obtain at least one from this trade week.

I feel we need another ruckman- Mumford ,in particular whom is strong and developed, injury free whom can operate as our No.1 ruckman Jamar is a good back up if not traded and Meeson & Spencer can develop- or try to get Jolly back- our other weakness is our forward line and hopefully we keep Miller for experience and toughness to protect Watts & Jurrah whilst we develop , hopefully another two talls from our picks 11 & 18 or 34 (depending if we trade.)

Mumford comes from Bunyip close to Casey.

We all have expressed our thoughts , however their is NO doubt in my mind where our perceived weaknesses are and the two that we should seriously try to trade are Bell & P.J. I'd give Newton another year as I think he developed a littl in the last weeks at Casey.

I'd be very disappointed if we go for smalls or mediums for our later picks or rokkies. Do you ?

2 KPP are a must with picks 11 and 18 panos/carlisle and black maybe

Mumford would be great for our ruck he's 22/23 and will fit into our potential window

I don't think Jolly fits due to his age. but it would be a coin toss who to get rid of out of PJ and Jamar

We need Garland back into the back or else another KPB

2 elite mids with 1 and 2 will be great

The list development has been really good so far they seemed to have got a good mix of players

and once they plug the forward line with 2 KPP to see Jurrah Watts, Black, Panos, Wonna, Jetta is mouth watering

As Cam Schwab said on twitter you need probaly 12-14 mids: inside, outside and line breaker mids

He also made the observation GFC has about 14.

1 more key forward - Look out for Butcher, Panos, Carlisle, Black or Griffiths in the draft.

1 more ruckman - Mumford would be a great fit through the PSD.

Class midfielders - Scully, Trengove & Jetta will hopefully all find themselves at Melbourne next year to help us in this regard.

Not sure what sort of response I will get here, but why would we sit back and hope Mumford goes to the PSD? I think he is a very good player, and will become a league-best ruckman in around 3 years. He is only 23, Geelong have done the hard work by waiting for him to develop, why not make a solid trade request? In 2012, when we are hoping to be a flag chance, he will only be 26 so will still have 3-4 years of good footy ahead of him, so will fit in to our window just fine.

If you had the choice of who our ruck duo will be from 2012-2016, I for one would want Mumford-Jamar, with Stef Martin as a back up/key forward (or CHB). I personally don't rate Spencer (just thinking about that "kick" he did against Carlton when he dropped the ball makes me cringe - THIS IS AFL!!!). Let Jamar be the Number 1 ruck over the next 2 years, with Mummy as support, then change it around when Jamar is getting toward the end.

What would we offer at trade? I would seriously consider pick 18 + a player (maybe Newton as Mooney will go to the Gold Coast next year). That shows how much I rate Mumford. Why risk picking up a ruckman at pick 18, have to wait 3+ years for him to develop, then find he's no friggin good, when Mumford is obviously going to make the cut?

Good post. I agree with you on spencer although he is treated like a son around here. I have a bit more confidence in Messon and would love to see him have a real crack next year. Pick 18 and a player would do it I would assume.

I definitely agree.

To win a flag you really need at least one strong competitive ruckman and a couple of big key forwards plus a bit of back-up.

Of those on our list under 24 , we only have Stef ( who needs to polish his footy skills) Watts ( who needs a lot of physical development) ,Juice ( who is a big question mark) and perhaps Spencer ( who has a long way to go).

Quality talls are hard to find - 2 out of every 3 probably won't make it.

I hope that we use 11 and 18 on rucks/KPPs - and fill up our rookie list with a few speculative big men

Oops - I forgot Meeson - who I think is still just under 24. Perhaps that's because I'm not confident he will ever make the grade!

I have a bit of an opinion of Meesen, ore than Spencer anyway! Meesen started slow, but started to play pretty bloody good footy prior to his injury.

How about this trade...

Paul Johnson + pick 50 to Sydney for pick 28? Would give us 6 picks in the top 34.

What do we need?

Star players.

Listing a plethora of mids and then insinuating that that area is fine is misguided.

Aaron Davey is our only star.

Morton, Scully, and Trengove, with some application, will become star performers. I have high hopes for Maric, Blease, and Petterd.

Best. Available.

This is the week for worrying about 'needs.'

I think our list is in great shape at the moment when you consider we have a multitude of young key backs in:

Rivers, Warnock, Garland, Frawley

A good couple of key forwards in:

Watts, Jurrah and to a much lesser extent Newton

Then when you add the multitude of capable midfielders including the addition of Scully and Trengrove it is starting to really take shape.

So IMO the only thing we need now is to target 3 x Key Position Forwards with picks 11, 18 and 34.

This would be wise simply because the odds are most key forwards never come along so we must draft as many quality KPF's as possible.

The only area i think we may be lacking in is the ruck division having said that we do have a number of young guys that may still come along such as Meesen, Spencer, Johnson (who i do think is quite good but cops a lot of flack from MFC supporters) and of course Jamar.

i Think you will see morton became more of a forward, in years to came, he led our marks for the year and he is 192 cm tall so he has the height to be a chf, i think he is too slow to be a midfield player, he never play on, he almost always stops props then disposes it.

The papers are saying MFC are interestd in Ball- Do we think he would be a decent pick up? Or have we got enough mids.?

He is a good mid, how many of those do we have?

Lynden Dunn, Clint Batram, Rohan Bail, Simon Buckley, Daniel Bell, and all those kids being on our list doesn't mean we have a midfield that can do without the services of Luke Ball.

Agree that we need to chase talls.

I just reckon that Ball really is quality. I'd hope that if we got him we'd be more likely to concentrate our draft action on rucks/KPFs !!

The other issue with Ball ( and Burgoyne) is that we need to lift our TPP to get to the 92.5% minimum. If a mid age tall of Ball's quality was available - then I'd certainly take him instead

I did not think it was definate he has gone to Sydney, whilst I understand, highly likely,I wish people would not make statements until they are verified. Show me where Shane Mumford has been traded till Sydney. I rang Geelong this morning and they stated that no trade has happened as yet.

Paul Roos was on Mark Fine's show on SEN last night and said that Mumford had agreed to join Sydney. The two clubs had yet to agree on the details of a trade but it seems likely that Mumford will be a Swan in 2010.

And JC, you're ringing clubs to find out details of trades? I reckon they've probably got enough on their plates right now without every footy fan bothering their receptionists.

I do not think it is any of your business, if one rings a club to get verificvation of a trade. Better to get it from the horses mouth rather than the gossip chambers.Lastly, if I want to take the liberty to contact a club.I do not think it is any of your business

If you don't want it to be anyone else's 'business' then keep it to yourself.

You posted it on a discussion board. People discussed.

I think you're being overly sensitive. And I don't appreciate the name calling. I certainly didn't call you any names; the use of the emoticon expressed my bewilderment at your actions.

Finally, I stand by what I said - I don't think answering the inquiries of everyday footy fans is the best use of clubs' time at this time of year.

melb has 4 (main) players who have played ruck this year...loads of arguments for/against each of them...

i'm at peace wit jamar getting another year...at 19 i would like to see spencer kept and wait for meesen to fully recover and tested...if Mumford slipped out of syds hands...then i would be happy to take him via psd if we got rid of PJ..

can melb afford to go back to the days when we had one ruckman (jeff white) and support ruckman/tall forward?

i think meesen and spencer will be fighting for the one spot next year...

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued.
