Trying to match each Geelong Premiership player with a guy running around with a Demon jumper on his back.

The backline:

Darren Milburn – Jared Rivers (Hope he stays at the club)

Matthew Scarlett – Chip Frawley (Not sure if he will ever be that good)

Corey Enright - Cam Bruce (Filling a hole in the interim)

Tom Harley – Matty Warnock (Bit of muscle in the back half)

Harry Taylor – Col Garland (Needs to recover from injury)

Andrew Mackie - Cale Morton (Could play anywhere)

In the middle:

Brad Ottens - Mark Jamar (Strong ruck who can kick goals. One good thing to come out of the latter rounds 2009 - discovering he can slot a few through)

Joel Selwood – Nate Jones (Are they in the same league?)

Gary Ablett - Jack Grimes (No pressure!)

Joel Corey – Brad Green (Mr Courageous)

Cameron Ling – Brent Moloney (He's no stopper)

James Kelly - Aaron Davey (He's signed.....finally!)

The lads up front:

Jimmy Bartel – Matty Bate (Where do I start?)

Cameron Mooney – Brad Miller (As above)

Steve Johnson - Liam Jurrah (The mercurial forward)

Travis Varcoe – Austin Wonaeamirri (Lets hope he stays on the park in 2010)

Tom Hawkins – Jack Watts (Maybe a slight difference in body size but young enough none the less)

Paul Chapman - Col Sylvia (We probably need him in the midfield without Brock)

Int:

Mark Blake – Jake Spencer (A lot of development needed)

Shannon Byrnes - Tom Scully (Will take time)

Max Rooke - Lynden Dunn (The defensive half forward - surely Dunny is the man)

David Wojcinski - Jamie Bennel (A long way off)

I think we are a long way off yet!

People talk about the turn around from the Hawks but they have guys who are willing to lay some pretty mean tackles - and they had a guy called Buddy running around.

Defensive pressure is the key! The Dees are laying more effective tackles under DB IMO but we are a mile off the numbers that the Cats and Saints are now racking up.

This is not the way to chase a Premiership. Do you think Geelong would have lined their list up against the 2006 Premiership Eagles side. Every winner of the flag over my time of watching footy has won with a game-style that is unique and original.

Having said that, your comparisons are apt, if a little hopeful.

Joel Selwood – Nate Jones (Are they in the same league?) Nope, Both can win the hard ball, selwoods use is so much better than Jones

Gary Ablett - Jack Grimes (No pressure!) Ablett is a superstar, but I reckon Grimes has the poise and ability to get around the mark

Joel Corey – Brad Green (Mr Courageous) Different players

Cameron Ling – Brent Moloney (He's no stopper) Play different positions, can't compare them.

James Kelly - Aaron Davey (He's signed.....finally!) Davey is much better in skills and a better player, Kelly is a decent defender tho

The lads up front:

Jimmy Bartel – Matty Bate (Where do I start?) Bate is getting better, but Bartel is the better player

Cameron Mooney – Brad Miller (As above) Mooney preforms more often and has better skills

Steve Johnson - Liam Jurrah (The mercurial forward) Stevie J is awesome, but Jurrah could get as good if not much much better

Travis Varcoe – Austin Wonaeamirri (Lets hope he stays on the park in 2010) Varcoe is more a defensive forward, Wonna I hope will be more an attacking forward

Tom Hawkins – Jack Watts (Maybe a slight difference in body size but young enough none the less) Jack should be a better match winner like carey while Hawkins will be a solid FF like Neitz

Paul Chapman - Col Sylvia (We probably need him in the midfield without Brock) The kid can be a better player but Chappy is great

Int:

Busted out AFL Live 2003 (lol) which has the playing lists from 2002 and I can field 17 or 18 players for Geelong that played AFL this year (and all except Steven King are still at the club).

No wonder they're such a good team if they've been playing together that long

That's one of the keys to success. Once the core and major strengths (ie. Top 6 quality/star players and decent mid-range quality palyers) of the playing group are identified after the 'much experimentation', the longevity of those chosen playing together such as the players at Geelong Football Club - and developed hardened bodies of course - will go a long way to a shot at a Premiership.
