Good to see Grimes back, if only for the fact we now know his back injury isnt serious! Well, it isnt at the moment anyway, I'm sure it will be something he and the club have to manage for his whole career, but I have faith they'll be able to.

It's a very interesting bench.

I'd like to see Moloney play, purely because I want him to play out a whole season. I think that would be good for him mentally to get that under his belt, and then continue on with his good form.

I'd also like to see Sylvia play, as he was in great form before the suspension, and he needs to try and recapture and build upon that as quickly as possible, for both his sakes and the clubs.

Morton was good last week, so he'll likely get a go, unless they're thinking of resting him. He did alot less running last week though, so maybe that was his rest?

Unsure about the rest. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Spencer has barely played a full game in VFL seniors since returning from injury has he? I think he played a half in the Reserves, and most of last weeks game in the Seniors?

Best team they can select dear boy and that's what matters.

Would have been easy to leave out Frawley and Grimes in particular. And yes--I think they will win quite nicely. Don't bother looking at the forward line as selected--just look at the squad and see who may play there and you won't feel so certain. Of course Bailey will pick taggers for Cousins, Deledio and Cotchin and the 3 chosen will be playing for their future.

I suspect Newton and Miller will exact revenge upon a lot of knocker/tankers in the best possible way!

Looking forward to seeing you there cheering them on and singing the song!

Donny Donny! You just don't see the Big picture do you. You are happy to see The Demons win a handful of games against crap teams, & then go home Proud of the Teams efforts. Good on ya if that rattles your cage. I want The Demons to Rule in Late September.

Would you like to Reserve a seat for that? Or is that aiming a little too high?

Have a Hot Cuppa & get back to me...ok

Agree completley.

If Moloney gets 'dropped' 'rested' or whatever you wanna call it, that would be so disheartening for him (and will stuff up my SuperCoach team). I want him to play all 22 this year, and have a red-hot crack at Davey and Bruce for the Bluey. He certainly deserves it given the horrid run he's had with injury.

I just can't see any reason behind him not being named in the starting 22. edit: Tanking aside ;)

I have taken Delidio as my Supercoach captain because i fully expect there not to be a hard tag on him.

Good decision. I'm also thinking this game should not be our greatest losing challenge to year end, given Rawlings desire. Still not sure if we can meet every disturbing West Coast Eagles challenge. They're proven experts at this caper over the last 2 years.

To play at St.Kilda"s level in 2-3 years we have got to make hard & Tough Decisions.

I hope The Club is united on this Front. Bailey must stay Like a Rock & Back his Judgements All the Way.

2 Years Ago Saint supporters wanted Lyons Blood. But for once that club stood Firm.

We must take the same attitude. Stuff Wet Coke. that win against Hawthorn will Hopefully Bite them Hard.

....and Matty Warnock up forward for a very well-earned rest from defensive duties..

Well, this from Nathan Jones' Twitter page tonight........

"Just finished the main session ... boys trained well... matty warnock slotted a few down forward maybe a position change for the big fella"

Sounds like a good idea to me, ahem. :P

...and didn't star either. Unless we're determined to play Martin/PJ up forward a fair bit to retain our tall/small structure I can't see him playing this week.

If Sylvia really is playing at Casey that leaves only one more to cut from the extended bench. Given Bennell is also playing I'm not sure we need Wheels.

No Brock McLean again, will they declare he's put the cue in the rack for the year sometime next week?

Also, have a look at the Bombres side, they're giving West Coast a great chance to win at home: Lloyd, McVeigh, Davey and Winderlich all out injured!

West Coast wouldn't win if the Bombers forfeited. They will not win again this year. See todays Sun.

I agree. Should be a Royal Commission investigation into that Stinking organization. I Hate WET COKE a lot!

I suspect Newton and Miller will exact revenge upon a lot of knocker/tankers in the best possible way!

So I require vengeance because I think Newton should play games at the end of another losing season, or that Miller should be given games to resurrect his career?

Newton is lucky we are 'list managing' - he gets to play a game.

And if you are alluding that I, as a 'tanker,' thought Newton and Miller missed on purpose you are way-off. Bailey will go into the game as he is about to, as young as he can, and will try people in positions they are not used to, he will put the kids in the important positions, at the important times and if they still win he will say "Oh, well. I tried to do what I had to do but we were never going to lose that game."

And BTW, the only poster that I can recall that alluded to Newton or Miller missing on purpose (not tongue in cheek) is a NON-tanking proponent True Believer. Apparently, she loves the club so much that she accuses players of missing goals on purpose for draft picks.

Sylvia is playing for Casey this week.

Good. He derserves a club imposed suspension in addition to the AFL suspension. What he did (V's WC) was just so Sylvia. The kid still hasn't grown up yet. When will the penny drop?

Valenti should be in again, poor kid gets one game then chucked out again, play him the rest of the year in Brock's place. The way Brock has been moving, Valenti is FASTER. We have a chance to be the tigs, but i hope we dont.

So Donny I assume you want to use the 1 win we have left on this weekends game?

Mate--I want to see them win every game they can. At a club function last night one said to me 'losing is infectious and it's not easy to get rid of the infection" Great for membership and the club generally if we finish on a high.

Dunn, Bartram, Junior--you bet they'll use them as taggers

Yeah, nah.

We'll know soon enough, but clubs won't sacrifice their own run by tagging 3 opposition midfielders. They may run a tag, or two - probably one imo, and then let the others go head to head. And when they're head to head some midfielders are more accountable than others, but they won't play 3 mids in purely negating roles.

You're spot on.

Her vision must be clouded.

yeah, where are you sitting on Sunday--I want to make sure you're singing at the end, and waving your scarf if you haven't throttled yourself with it by then!

No, I wasn't suggesting for one moment that you, or anybody else on this site, believes the players should tank whilst on the field [although a 'supporter' at the function I attended last night thinks they should and did last Sunday].

I was merely referring to the criticism heaped upon Newton and Miller generally on this site, which I find depressing.

BTW I think you'll find that Bailey plays people where they should be best played with a view to winning--Did you see much evidence to the contrary last Sunday?

One other matter. At this function last night a [very] senior official told us that he thought almost the best thing going for the club at present was the morale of the playing group. In his view it was CRITICAL that this should not be interfered with. Make what you will about this comment, but all who heard it thought it was significant.

Why would I throttle myself Donny? We have some great Talent coming on, & hopefully we can pick up some class young talent in the Draft to speed up our midfield.

I am very optimistic about the Future actually.

But i couldn't care less about beating a crap side like Richmond in round 18 when it doesn't mean anything.

With the new team(s) coming in next year i want a good shot at the Draft picks before they all dry up for 5-6 years so that we give ourselves the best chance to win our 13th. Cup.

For over 40 years now i have watched The Demons win late season Dead Rubbers, & you know what.....They are Quickly forgotten.

Premierships & Finals are remembered forever Donny.

So don't question where my heart lies. I want The MFC to be number 1 in the AFL ok.

Again, I have no doubt where your heart [and mine actually] lie.We just have different views as to the best method for the club to progress. Incidentally one other thing said last night, is that next year MFC will have the youngest list in the AFL.Read what you like into that, but it was said several times.

One other thing--has MFC repeatedly won dead rubbers at seasons end? Your memory may be better than mine, but I don't think so. In fact, to the contrary, so bad has morale been much of the time, that once we're out of finals calculations, we've been hopeless--lost a whole string of games to end the season. I recall that happening several times since 1987, when we became a force again after 23 years of no finals. 2007 is often mentioned, but we hardly finished off the season in a blaze of glory. Last year we finished with a bunch of huge losses which must affect players' beliefs at the start of the next season.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
