MELBOURNE will be without No. 1 draft pick Jack Watts for up to a fortnight after he chipped a bone in his thumb playing for VFL affiliate Casey Scorpions.

The club confirmed on Thursday night that x-rays had revealed the injury sustained last weekend.

Watts has played three games for the Demons this season but has not appeared since the round 13 loss to the Brisbane Lions.

The 18-year-old's injury is among a number that have hit Melbourne's senior side with Jack Grimes (back), Brock McLean (knee), Mark Jamar (quad) and Brad Green (wrist) set to miss this week's clash with the Sydney Swans.

Grimes landed awkwardly after a marking contest during last weekend’s game against Geelong and hyper-extended his lower back. He played out the match but has not been able to train this week and is expected to also miss a week or two.

The news is worse for Jamar, who strained his left quad in the same game and will miss two to three matches.

Green has had wrist soreness for the past month. Unable to train on Thursday, he wasn't considered for this weekend’s game against the Swans.

McLean is also sidelined after an ongoing knee injury flared after the Cats game. The midfielder initially injured his knee in a collision during Melbourne’s round 15 win over Port Adelaide and played in pain last week.

However, rookie midfielder Jordie McKenzie was elevated to Melbourne's senior list on Thursday to cover some of these losses.

The Demons used the new AFL guidelines that allow a rookie to be elevated without the need to place a player on the long-term injury list.

McKenzie was selected with the first pick in the 2009 NAB AFL Rookie Draft and hails from Mortlake in eastern Victoria.

Senior coach Dean Bailey said McKenzie had deserved his promotion.

"This is a good outcome for Jordie," he said. "He has been one of the players who has really impressed us throughout the season playing for the Casey Scorpions, and his elevation is a nice reward for all his hard work this year."

Hardly tanking in the case of Watts who wasn't in the Melbourne team to start with and who most critics were saying a few weeks ago wasn't ready anyway!

That Injury list is getting bigger, with 6 weeks to go we have lost

Out for the year

Meesen, Garland, Bell, Strauss, Blease, Maric, Healey,Green(maybe)

Mclean should be put in the paddock until preseason

Aussie same as Mclean

others

Grimes 2-3 weeks

Jamar 3-4weeks

Watts 2 weeks

Wheatley 3 weeks

Sylvia 1 week Susp.

Thats 15 players unavailable this week and of those 15, 7 would be in our starting 18. 10 players that are or should be out for the year that almost a 25% of our list.

Your right this is starting to get a little big, no ones been noticing cause everyone wants to lose, but it is a little worrying a lot of breaks.

The more injuries we get, the more chances we get to blood our youngsters. Get McKenzie, McNamara, Bail, Valenti, Spencer, maybe Hughes and let them experience AFL football.

[censored] news if true.

Hopefully the back fractures haven't returned! :(

I'll be happy if he covers one of these losses thanks very much...

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
