Jurrah V Newton

i think one interesting thing is that Liam has played 4 games, but Newton has only played 18... Really hasn't played that much senior footy has he?

Play him now.

We got the games, we can't make the finals, he is contracted for next season.

Play him now.

Watching Jurrah play - can be compared to having sex with Halle Berry, Elle McPherson or Giselle.

Watching Newton play - can be compared to having sex with Janet Reno, Julia Gillard or Elton John.

I'm going to put what little credibility I have on the line and say that he could be the first MFC boy to break the goal kicking ton.

As wild as that may seem, I wouldn't disagree. Once he starts putting together 4 quarters he could easily bag 10. He breased to three goals after one quarter the other day. I'm not saying he went out of the game entirely, because he still set up just about all our goals, but given four quarters from full forward or the forward pocket and he could very well grab quite a few bags. It was disappointing he missed that sitter from 15 out the other day, particularly when he'd been so accurate from directly in front. He'll be a gem this bloke though.

That would be amazing if he did and I wish he could, but he's probably too selfless, his eyes don't look for goal as quickly as a Fevola or Buddy

Maybe but I guess I could deal with 80 goals and 80 assists a season.

I agree but for different reasons, perhaps, than yours. I think Newton DOES have ability.

I think I'm right in saying he's played 2 games this year. The first was v Richmond--yes, I know they've proved to be no good--but Newton kicked 3 and missed a couple. He took a number of contested marks--more than any other player on our forward line in any match up to that point.

Then he played in that awful match v Adelaide, missed a couple of chances and was dropped.

The point is it's not a question of Newton v Jurrah. I prefer Jurrah up the ground a little. I think that Robbo is the bloke under question, and that our long term interests would be best served by giving Newton a few matches in succession at F.F

LJ doesn't have the fitness base to play up the ground at the moment. It does the beg the question about the future - who will play full forward - Watts or LJ? The beauty is that they both will not be one positional players so they could be swapped around regularly which only adds another dimension to our attack.

By the way I agree Newton deserves to play and for the rest of the year. I think he has been harshly dealt with and deserves another crack. If nothing else he adds some presence to our forward line with his "potential" marking abilities.

Disagree that hes been harshly dealt with, if hes form is good enough he would be in the side.

He isnt dominating at VFL and has struggled when promoted in the past.

We are screaming out for forwards, so hes had a major opportunitys this year.

Are motives are similar.

He's only played 18 games, I question his committment because of the fact that he hasn't put the work in the gym that others have. Bate is bigger than him in the shoulders and arms and he spent his forst couple of years as a mid, while coming to the club in the same year, at the same age.

Giving him opportunities at the end of this season is concurrent with 'tanking' though. Robbo is a better player but we are 3 and 12 and should be looking to the future.

If you want to play him, you are a lot more tolerant of 'tanking' than you let on...

What I love about him along with the excitement he brings to the game (potential to take hangers and snag goals out of nothing) he is a fantastic team orientated player. His looking for team mates in better positions is something I can not recall ever seeing from a MFC fwd. It is something you rarely see especially at AFL level but he looks to do the team thing on every occasion.

The concern I have with LJ is, that as I understand it, he was given permission by his tribe to come to Melbourne and play footy. I also understand that he has been earmarked as the future tribe leader.

I don't profess to know anything about aboriginal culture or customs but does this mean he could be summoned at any time to go back home to resume his tribe duties and that the career of our champion player in the making could come to an abrupt end?

You don't need to worry about that. The community of Yuendumu are absolutely football crazy, and they have told Liam that he is down here in Melbourne on Warlpiri business. In 12 years time, after he's won a couple of Brownlows, Norm Smiths and Coleman medals, he'll be able to go back home and resume his tribal responsibilities.

The Yuendumu Football club does not award a best player medal or trophy. Instead, they honour the best team player. It's part of his DNA to do what's best for the team - though he does like taking speccies and kicking goals!

Pello. Don;t worry! From here in Yuendumu, and Yuendumu Footy Club, we can tell you that Liam is in Melbourne on Warlpiri business, with the full support of his community. And that is for as long as he wants it, which we know he wants to be 10-15 years of AFL footy for the Dees. He won;t be being pulled back to Yuendumu we are immensely proud of what he is doing and the leadership and inspiration he is showing to all Warlpiri youth by being in Melbourne. He is a fantastic role model for all remote Indigenous youth who can dare to dream, work hard and hold faith to make their dreams come true.....There is no better way for him to serve his community and tribe than what he is doing in Melbourne and the honourable and joyous way he is doing it.

And we also know that with the support he is receiving down there from RudeBoy, Rupert B, and Melbourne FC (especially Aaron, Aussie, Wheels and Ian Flack, Dean Bailey) that he is very happy. They are all part of our Warlpiri family.

GO JUKURTAYI! ALL YUENDUMU PROUD!

We the Supporters are Honoured that Liam Jurrah is playing with the melbourne football club. I cannot wait to see him play at the MCG with a full crowd. Liam will just play the same way.....

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
