New Forward Line, need a change..

HF- BATE, MORTON, JURRAH FF- WATTS, MILLER, MARIC/WONA

Now, if there's something our forward line needs its balance and stability, sure hands, good kicks, some strength some class and some crumb.

Does anyone else believe that Morton could be thrown at CHF in a Robert Murphy type of way? He has good hands, can lead up and makes good decisions. Those of you who say he is a disappointment this year are simply finding a guy to vent your past 2 weeks frustration on. He hasn't been played in position, and until the pies game was in our top 6 for the year, and Easily! I think he could benefit from a few weeks at CHF, it'd allow him to play his game and regain confidence, plus i think it'd really work. Miller needs to be in the square, you can't have a forward line that lacks strength and a pack breaker, isn't flying but has those assets. Robbn's confidence is shot, written all over his face. Watts needs miller there, and miller is aware of watts. Bate and jurrah to provide options on the flanks with the little cave man or maric to crumb. Was just curious to see what other people would do to improve our forward line thats shot to pieces at the minute.. Did like martin's last quarter, can just tell he is comfortable there too. Cheers guys.

GO DEES!

I reckon Cale being placed in the forward line is a tad premature, he doesn't have the build for it at the moment and we really cannot afford to have Watts and Morton in the same forward line.

I do, however, believe that when his body fills out he could play a 'Richo' type role running to both ends of the ground and kicking a few goals and stopping a few goals, rather than what wingers do these days - being a simple link player across the midfield. Martin could also be groomed for this, if a position in the backline isn't there for him.

I think you could throw any 6 blokes there, the fact that they all sit up around the centre of the ground means they will all fail.

Until we decide to keep 2-3 blokes in the F50 then we can start to talk about who should play there.

I wish Neitz still played, at least then we had a player who knew that to kick goals he needed to stay within 50 meters of the big sticks.

*Cale Morton SEGWAY*

Doesn't yet have the build to compete in the forward line and is currently being played in the backline, either being groomed for your Hodge-style "quarterback" position, or he is being tutored in forward line trickery by playing against it a la young midfielders being sent to tag the big guns.

Either way, Cale is still developing and it had to be expected he'd hit some sort of 2nd yr wall

Hf- BATE MORTON JURRAH

Ff- WATTS MILLER MARIC/WONA

The main points i was thinking with this forward line was balance, and players that contemplate each other, with a spice of magic and lead up play. First, Morton at CHF, I see Morton, with his safe hands, good read of the play and footy brain. Can lead up and roam into midfield, opening up corridor for watts and miller to lead into.. I can see him playing a Robert Murphy Type role, with great results! He's got a world of talent, no doubt. Miller works best from the square, is our ONLY player in one on one or to burst a pack, and will protect Watts, as miller is maligned but good footy brain. Bate and Jurrah both use space on flanks, Wona or Maric to crumb Watts and Miller, Martin impressed in last quarter against bombers, so he can be rotated thru to give watts and miller a rest, and with someone giving Sylvia, Green, Bruce and others running thru from midfield, i just thought the forward line needs some improvement, just wanted to know if anyone else has some ideas?

Thanks guys.

GO DEES! :-)

Ps- robbo's confidence is shot, he's feeling the threat of his career falling away, by having him there, its almost a waste of time as we ALWAYS seem to go to him and ignore others, why kick it to a bloke who isn't positive? Robbo is gone..

What about Dunn up front? Good mark, good kick, strength.... Him and Miller as the 'powerhouse' forwards (until JW is ready), Jurrah, Bate and Watts on the sides, Aussie and Maric (and maybe Jetta) crumbing the spoils?

Morton is a winger, and I'm guessing is just playing down back to get a feel for it.

I know we are playing Stef all around the ground, but I like him as a monster fullback, the gorilla keeper if you will, to manage your Halls / Pavlichs / Rougheads.

Who do we have that can be called on to consistently kick 50m+ goals? Wheatley. Jones. Who else?

Its nice in theory, but Stef doesn't really play like that or have that personality from what I've seen.

Frawley is more in that mould. I remember someone saying of him when he was drafted (it was probably Spud Frawley to be honest) that he is rare in that he "loves to be in the cage" as a term for relishing the fight against a dominant forward & shutting him down.

Obviously there's a conflict of interest there if it was Danny who said it, but I liked the quote.

You are correct - we have a number of options who can all play - Bate, Miller, Robbo, Dunne, Morton (though prefer him up the ground for the moment ), Wona / Maric, Jurra, Jetta - but they don't set up right. Some need to stay back and work hard to offer positive leads (miller is the exception - he does present !) ..way too much kick and hope for the speccy with us.

We have no forward line defensive pressure, ball goes in ball comes out, I wouldn't mind seeing Maric, Jetta, Jurrah, Watts, Miller, Bate inexperienced but it adds a bit of speed, Maric and Jetta front and square get to every forward contest. Aussie when fit can also play this role and we would love for Davey to get back doing this but he is required further up the ground for now.

garland will come into consideration down forward, if they are all fit and firing we may have an excess of tall backs, the guy has talent and think he could be a very good forward given the chance.

Not if Stef Martin is already up forward, I wouldn't think.

HF Sylvia Miller Jurrah

FF Watts Garland Aussie

The only thing that concerns me is our forward line pressure to keep it in. This is where Davey is so important! If we had Alwyn we would be right. Thats why it is important to develope both Jetta and Maric and others in this role. Robertson to replace Garland this season. Our disposal into the forward line is pretty ordinary. if they can hit Robbo on the lead instead of bombing it all the time we would be much better.

I dont think much of Bate to be honest. Trade him!

So you don't see Morton playing a Murphy role? Very VERY similar players, tall, both built like a cigarette, but both good footy brains. Murphy doesn't contest packs etc, just uses his brain to find space. Name one other player right now who could hold it down without leaving another position vacant.

Newton = no

Hughes = untested

Robbo = finished

What he said. Although I think it is mostly the coaches, not the players, that want to play an empty forward 50.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

    Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

    In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

    THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

    Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
