Colin Wisbey Pyeman on the Black & White Extreme Bulletin Board suggested these as the top five draft picks if the draft were held now (bearing in mind that it's a long way out):-

1 Melbourne - Tom Scully

2 Melbourne - John Butcher

3 Richmond - Kobi Stevens

4 Fremantle - Kane Lucas or Anthony Morabito

5 West Coast - Anthony Morabito or Kane Lucas

Alpha33 apologises. He misread the way the site is formatted and thought it was Wisbey.

Scully is an absolute lock at no.1 this year no matter who has the pick.

Don't think Christensen will be top 5?

hmm i would of thought so

nah you would be looking at guys like Kobey Stevens, Morabito who have bigger and harder bodies over Allen. He looks like top 10 atm but

West Coast will win 2 more.

Should we try and trade for another top 5 pick? Christensen or Lucas would be good, as well as Scully and Butcher.

If you look at the EBnW website, it's actually not Wisbey's top 5 picks at all. It's the top 5 picks of some random guy and Wisbey just so happens to have posted in the same thread.

These aren't Wisbey's picks.

I agree, I think they are good enough to win 2 out of 11 games consiering they play richmond, fremantle, US and im sure they will upset another team.

I don't think west coast are any danger of taking butcher. West coast haven't gone after any big forward types in the worsfold era. Sumich was the last proper full forward they had.

thanks for the clarification Bob, I thought it was a little strange, Colin keeps his cards pretty close to his chest nowadays, and even in the past, he'd only publish his rankings close to or after the draft.

These days he only posts the Collingwood selections, after the draft. He, along with several others, are a big loss to bigfooty.

If WCE get pick 1 or 2 they will take the best West Aussie, Kane Lucas is also a very very good midfielder.

If West Coast get 1st or 2nd pick, they will have another shortly after. Because either Melb or Rich must be close after that.

Then they could grab 2 top picks. Poss Scully & Morabito.

If they get pick 1 why would they overlook the best kid in the country ? And in recruiting circles there's presently a clear standout.

If they get pick 1 they'll choose Scully.

agreed.. no team is going to pass on scully when he puts up numbers like he does and he controls every game! lucas might be a local boy for west coast.. but they arent going to pick him just on that reason.. yes lucas is very good.. but scully is a freak!

i wouldn't want to be counting on this if it came down to a month of footy to go and they 'need' one more to avoid the priority pick

trade who ?

If the Dees take Scully that will be another private schoolboy taken as a first round pick. That'll be two years running.

I don't want this to be a private vs public school bagging session but historically private school recruits haven't been seen to have the hunger for success that perhaps others may have. There is none that I can see in the list of Number 1 draft picks since 1985. And before people say Brendan Goddard, Caulfield Grammer isn't a real private school!

Luke Ball was touted as the No 1 pick but the Hawks chose Hodge because he was seen as more 'hungry' and had a bit of mongrel about him.

Can anyone think of other highly successful private school kids??

Chris Judd went to Caulfield Grammar

He was in my house too. ;) Brett Deledio was also in my class in year 12. Both reasonable players.:P Private vs. Public school is a poinltess debate, as it's by no means a measure of how good a player is.

I was talking specifically about number one picks and Watts and Goddard are the only ones as far as I can see. Judd was pick 3.

Scott Clayton who knows a bit about recruiting is on record as saying that the private school system doesn't prepare players anywhere near as well for AFL as the TAC Cup or some of the other leagues. They are not as mature in body as they are not playing against men like Bryce Gibbs did in SA at age 15.

And BTW it was a joke abut Caulfield Grammer. Maybe I should have put :) or ;) or whatever! This is not a slagging session of private vs public but more a curiosity. Given there are 24 number one picks and only two to date have come out of the private school system. Scully would make it three and two in a row to Melbourne.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
