If you were Dean Bailey and were asked to put forward your very best 22 (excluding any draft picks) from the players we have right now (including players with injuries), who would be in your team?

here's mine:

FB: Mathew Whelan, Mathew Warnock, Colin Garland

HB: Simon Buckley, Jarad Rivers, Paul Wheatley

C: Colin Sylvia, Brock McLean, Cale Morton

HF: Mathew Bate, Brad Miller, Russell Robertson

FF: Aaron Davey, Brad Green, Austin Woneamirri

R: Paul Johnson, James McDonald, Brent Moloney

I: Cameron Bruce, Nathan Jones, Mark Jamar, Ricky Pettard

unluckies: Clint Bartram, Daniel Bell, Jack Grimes, Lyden Dunn, James Frawley, Addam Maric, (Shane Valenti)

what's yours?

EDIT: I forgot Martin, so in: Martin...out: Ricky Pettard

--also, jamar wouldnt be in there but hes the second ruckman

--james mcdonald can be the run with player

Posted

FB: Whelan Warnock Martin

HB: Petterd Rivers Garland

C: Morton Moloney Green

HF: Sylvia Miller Davey

FF: Wonaeamirri Robertson Maric

Foll: PJ McLean Valenti

Int: Jones Buckley Bate Bruce

Emergency: Bell Grimes Newton

If the team had to have two ruckmen I would throw Jamar in there.

EDIT: I keep forgetting McDonald.

Whelan Martin Garland

Jamar McDonald Bartram

Bartram is my prefered run with player and your best 22 needs to include one run with player and I'm still prepared to give Bell one last crack

Assuming that Bailey wants to continue with "run and carry":

FB: Whelan Garland Davey

HB: Bruce Rivers Petterd

C: Morton McLean Green

HF: Sylvia Miller Bate

FF: Wona Robertson Maric

Foll: Jamar McDonald Jones

Inter: PJ Moloney Wheatley Grimes

We need some creativity and run out of the backline, hence Davey in the bp.

Whelan Martin Petterd

Rivers Garland Green

Morton Moloney Davey

Sylvia PJ Bruce

Miller Newton(Watts) Ozzie

Jamar McLean Jones

Grimes MWarnock Bate Buckley

Dunn Macca Maric Valenti Frawley Wheatley

Bell Bartram Robbo Carroll

That defense is sheer quality, makes me very happy

But the midfield is slow and lacking 'brilliance'... although both Morton and Davey have that in spades.

McLean

Morton

Davey

Jones

Moloney

Buckley

Grimes

seems like a talented bunch but Gee they are a fair bit off matching it with the best. I really wish we had Daniel Rich :o Morton is just going to have to become THE man... of course we don't even have a real ruckman as Jamar doesn't count

forward line is very poor and I doubt any of those players are likely to improve much on where they are right now. PJ and Sylvia may become the real deal but if they do I don't expect it will be in a way that puts goals on the board - I really do wonder where the hell all are goals are going to come from... does it involve Robbo and Davey? Matty Bate and Juice Newton please stand up.

The other massive problem is there is bugger all depth there

We have 'smalls' covered all over the park and some good key backs, lots of toughness in the middle but we are missing:

Genuine tap ruckman (Spencer?)

2 quick, polished midfielders (Davey, Morton, Buckley?)

2 leading-goalkicking forwards (Watts/Newton?)

Problem is I am not confident that our current list has the cattle to mature into these positions - therefore I am forced to conclude the only way is via the draft which is why I was so insistent on getting the PP next year

Bloody hell we're ordinary right now!

I feel ultimately Grimes will take this position and push Bartram out with ease

i thought Green provieded a bit of that as well as leadership in a young backline, not to mention some of those ripping marks he took this year

Grimes was considered by many a top 10 pick( went at 14) with a full pre season ,if Bailey is true to form ,barring injury will play a lot of games this year with the odd rest thrown in,

i agree, but right now, no one could possibly put him in their "very best" 22 after playing one game

if we had the premiership tomorrow, he wouldnt be playing

Davey in the back pocket.........lmfa..........no idea, Davey in the back pocket would be as useful as an ash tray on a motorbike, horses for courses and he ain't that down there.

You probably said the same thing when the likes of Akermanis, Chris Johnson (Bris.), Wirrapanda, McLeod, and Johncock where shifted to the back pocket, after starting their careers as forwards. Lateral thinking obviously isn't your strong suit. We were sh#thouse this year at playing rebound footy and transferring play.

If you're going to play run and carry, you need to move the ball quickly through the lines. Davey is one of the few players on our list you can "run the lines". He's wasted as a forward under Bailey's gameplan.

never knew petterd...sounds even worse that pettard to shout out at the footy

i suppose its another "meeson" "shwarts" "neits" "wheelan" kind of spelling error

im not trying to disagree with you but how?

there will still be contests in any game plan where your typical "small forward" is able to crumb...likewise, apply defensive pressure to defenders of the opposition

if we play anything like hawthorn or geelong, are cyril and stokes wasted?

Grimes will be much better than just a 'run-with' player.

That's not to say that Ling & Kirk aren't great, but i just don't see him filling that role.

More like an adam simpson type

Crumbers are useful if you're prepared to kick to a contest occasionally. When we did, it actually worked with Wona as the crumber.

Davey almost played as a lead-up forward this year, usually leading out to the flanks. He had to out of necessity, because we rarely structured our forward line to allow the option of a long kick deep to the hot spot.

As for applying defensive pressure, it's not easy when the forwards are faced with a 4 against 7 situation most of the time.
