I suggest you watch the 2nd day draft camp video before you open your big trap. Clearly he wants to be a Demon.

I was quite surprised by his comments, he actually sounded like he'd love to join Melbourne and personally take on the responsibility of rebuilding the club. Normally the best kids will say all the right things about going to a bottom team but usually it sounds like they're just going through the motions.

if he doesnt barrack for melbourne, i cant imagine he would be keen to come to us. he is a 17 year old for godsake and would have his team. however, as a good quality player, he would realise he has no choice in where he goes, his coaches, and hopefully his family would be telling him that as well.

he will be happy to play for whoever drafts him. at this stage, he just wants to play afl.

Indeed. 3 weeks to go. (Can't wait).

I really get the feeling Jack has a really good head on his shoulders. I'd imagine he's a smart guy, given he wants to finish year 12 in Melbourne, he goes to a good school, he's no dummy.

And unlike a lot of dummy AFL footballers who look for quick success (ie. Chris Johnson, Robbie Warnock), Jack would understand that while Melbourne aren't going to be successful when he joins them in 2009, that the whole system is cyclical, and he would have the opportunity to help build a team which will be in contention for a premiership in 5 years time. I'd get much more satisfaction out of this than being drafted to Hawthorn, being a fringe player in the forward line behind Buddy and Roughead, and fluking a flag in my first year, and I'd imagine Jack feels the same way.

Jack doesn't want to play football to play finals in 2009, he wants to play football for 10-15 years, and he understands that clubs can change a lot in that time. And I'd imagine he's keen to be a part of that change at the Melbourne Football Club.

i imagine that just as he starts to come into peak form 3-5 years down the track, we will be challenging

BANG! Buckley cleans up Judd ball spills free, pack forms, Mclean grabs it and rips it out to Grimes, quick hands to Morton, steps inside Gibbs looks ahead to Watts, kicks out in front, Watts picks up on the half volley turns his man inside out wheels around onto his left and kicks a magnificent goal from outside 50. Melbourne running away now, Too strong, too good. This will be win number 8 in a row and with the finals next week 2011 is proving a renaissance of this great football club!

with some slight changes

BANG! McLean cleans up Judd ball spills free, pack forms, Grimes grabs it and rips it out to Buckley with some pace, quick hands to Morton, steps inside Gibbs looks ahead to Watts, kicks out in front, Watts picks up on the half volley turns his man inside out wheels around onto his left and kicks it to the leading maric, who drops a sitter but then picks it up very cleanly and handballs it to woneamirri and spins around and drills it to the goal square where watts has run into space and takes a brilliant contested mark over the shoulders of some weak [censored] of sh** called Chris Johnson. He goes back and kicks a magnificent goal from the top of the goal square. Melbourne running away now, Too strong, too good. This will be win number 8 in a row and with the finals next week 2011 is proving a renaissance of this great football club!

(2 minutes later)

Umpire Goldspink (back from nowhere) bounces the ball and up flies jake spencer with some real grunt, taps it straight to jones...he has made robbie warnock look like a 15 year old today.

Just as melbourne are finding their form, carlton are on the downhill. they have lost all of their draft picks through salary crap breeching and poor mark riley wishes he never left the dees

haha goose. come on mate.

I've got a sneaking suspicion we'll go for Natanui aswell. Whilst I'd prefer Watts, I can certainly see why we would take Natanui.

Honestly, I'll be happy no matter who we take.

Its pretty naive for any of us on here to think that we can make a better educated decision than the clubs recruiting & coaching staff.

Getting torn up about it is pointless & foolish.

Not to say I haven't already gone through all of this...

You're right, in reality the top 3 you could all make a good case for going number 1.

As optimistic as I am about next season I think we will struggle and again will be close to the bottom of the ladder. Perhaps our coaching staff will make a blunt assesement and realise that they may very well be in a position to take the dream duo of Butcher and Scully next year.

What would you rather have?

a)Natanui, Butcher and Scully

or

b)Watts, Butcher and Scully?

Hmm I'd still think I'd take option 2 but option 1 is awfully tempting.

You also have to consider the next couple of years.

Not only are the drafts going to be shallow due to GC & WS being involved, but you also have to consider that there may be (for example) quite a few quality forwards coming through in the next few drafts, but a dearth of decent ruckmen. Obviously if our recruiting staff are doing their job properly they will have kept track of the coming draft classes as well & have this sort of info.

I'm of the opinion that its hard to tell with ruckmen early on & they can be developed through late draft picks, whereas a CHF type like Watts doesn't grow on trees.

But I'm still aware that this is based on my limited football knowledge & if i really did know the answers, i'd probably be working with MFC.

And I'll be surprised if Butcher & Scully are still the consensus number 1 & 2 draft picks come draft time next year.

Usually this is the case as precocious 16 year olds make the state teams for the first time and are drafted high up.; look at Cotchin, Morton and Watts. Next year the landscape will change somewhat in that clubs will no longer be allowed to draft 17 year olds born in the months January, February, March or April; Gold Coast will be allowed to nab 10, I think, of them as the first of their concessions.

With this in mind, it is probable that Butcher and Scully will still be considered top draft picks next year.
