Why we must land a big name player this summer

All AFL clubs are required to pay a minimum of 92.5% of the salary cap.

With Neitz, Yze, Holland and White all possibly retiring, we will be WAY under that figure.

The problem is that if we do not land a big name player that is worth paying a lot of money too, we will have to reach the 92.5% by OVERPAYING our current out of contract plyers, or OVERPAYING for average out of contract players from other clubs.

I dunno if any of this made sense, but it does in my head.

We should and will explore all avenues. We must put the feelers out for players like J.Brown and Pavlich, and any other gun player that will be a free agent.

I agree what your saying, paying some of our existing players more than what they are worth to get to the 92.5% is a silly option, trying to get a big name by the lure of money is a better option, but I do not think we will be that far under, there must be quite a few ready to come out of contract who will need a little more than the last contract and the other thing is I'd rather see us pay 94% than 99% and pay duds more than they are worth.

agree with this in sentiment. i take it that u mean we need to trade or give up picks to get a proven performer???? Problem with this is bar Brad Green we have dont have much to trade and I don't think we will give up picks.

a way around us paying the 92.5% is by not promoting a veteran ie james mcdonald or robbo to the veterans list next year. thereby counting their whole salary (rather than 50% as it currently is with Yze and Neitz) in the cap.

we can leave valenti on the rookie list for example, and play him as the nominated rookie in the same way as michael jamison is from carlton this year.

I think we should ask the AFL to allow us to to be under the 92.5 for a year or two.

Otherwise will be overrewarding players, unless we get Brown on a mil for 5 years, frontloaded contract.

Well both Neitz and Yze were on the veterans list so only half their salaries would be on the cap and Holland would be on minimal salary anyway. White is certainly one which would free up a lot of room in our cap though.

In saying that, no need to throw money at a trade target for the sake of it. Would rather front load some contracts than waste money on some big name we don't need.

I really doubt the net result of four players off + four players on will be us being under the salary floor. We'd need to be pretty much sitting on it already, which I'm quite confident we're not.

I think you'll find we are paying some of Travis' pay packet but other than that, who in on our current list would be commanding any significant amount that once Yze, Neita and Robbo are out of the picture would leave us at or above 92.5??

I am under the impression that we are nearly paying 100% of the cap at the moment, could someone check this out please.

for Kerr and Brown, yes, fev no, give Fev 3 but not 5.

they will stay where they are unless McNamee gets to them soon and he is very persuasive, Kerr and Brown only, Fev can stay at the cheats

I believe that those numbers were from 2006 and sice then we have moved on half of TJ, Pickett, Bizz, Brown, etc.

And now half of TJ ($200 000), half of Neita (veterans list - $200 000), White ($400 000), Yze ($300 000), Holland ($150 000), Whelan ($150 000).

I think they are pretty conservative numbers, and they total more than $1.4 million.

His contract was another in a long line of blunders by the MFC.

Agree.

We have no franchise (marketable) player except for Davey and McLean to an extent. Pickett has been the biggest fish we've caught this decade.

Sadly Thompson, Johnstone, Jolly and Simmonds are guns we've let go.

Knowing Melbourne we'll end up trading Brad Green for pick 22, and Cam Bruce for a 4th rounder.

I see absolutely no reason to rush out , wallets aflapping to land a supposed franchise player. What for ? Are we likely to challenge seriously in the next 2-3 years. I dont hink so. we wil lbe tialing off our rebuilding staring a possible window then. So in teh mean time we throw money at some "big name" Foolish for mine.

we need to play smart. Lets sort out who we want , who we'll keep etc. Sort out the money ( contracts) for them. Lets make sure we can trade in the black. Thats how you do business. A big money bloke whilst sating somes apetite for cosmetic glory wil do nothinng for us except waste money.

There is a right and wrong time to spend money..NOW/Next year..aint it !!

If we landed Pavlich or J.Brown, we could contend for a flag next year.

You talk crap, but this in one of your best ever...

If we landed BOTH in the PSD we would still not be contending for a flag.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
