DEAKYN SMITH (Dandenong Stingrays)

179cm, 65kg/seven NAB League games in 2019

“Deakyn is a Caulfield Grammar boy so we haven’t seen a heap of him at NAB League level this year, but his form in school footy has been really good. He can play inside or outside the contest and his body is developing well. He got a taste of Vic Country under-16s last year.”

Highlighted as one to watch for the futures game.

Not related to the player quoted, but it looks like donuts from our Alice Spring zone, again.

I'd love to know what sort of resources are being thrown into that area.

List of players in our NT academy.

NT Academy takes part in Michael Long Cup

Two of the boys listed Tyrell Martin and Alonzo Nelson have been selected for the 2019 Flying Boomerangs Team.

We also have Andy Moniz-Wakefield  in the NT Thunder u16 team.

Awesome, thanks for that MAT. So things are happening, hopefully we can jag a ripper at some point.

Kobi George is the likely NGA player that will be definitely grabbed in the 2020 draft.  Dees need to keep him under wraps.

Not the star midfielder type but the smart fast half forward goalkicker.  Think type of player like Josh Hill (former bulldog/eagle).

Will go to GC17 as they’ll get all of NT as a zone

Isn't Kobi George from Victoria?

Melbourne welcomes NGA talent

This is from 2017 -

Berwick’s Kobi George and Narre Warren’s Deakyn Smith have been selected in the Flying Boomerangs

More recently from the Stingrays site -

Kobi George (Berwick): “Kobi is an indigenous player who’s part of Melbourne’s Next Generation Academy. His ball control and ability to sidestep is exceptional and he’s very quick off the mark, but we just need to get his endurance levels up a bit. He could be one to watch.”

Anyone tracking our NGA prospects Kobi George and Deakyn Smith? Are we expecting bids to match or to otherwise draft?

(I know difficult given they probably haven't played this year).

For the record, hoping Toby Bedford (former NGA prospect) gets another year to develop if not already contracted for 2021.

No, I expect them both not to get picked up.

Weren't really doing much at NAB league level and I'd be extremely surprised if they were picked up.

Why am I not shocked?

Some clubs are getting top 10 players from NGA and we get donuts.

Well we got Bedford. Can't think of anyone else.

Absolutely screwed again by the AFL taking away our NT zone and can't recall us doing anything about it.

Yeah the NGA zones aren't equal in the slightest.

The system is a rort i agree. Should never have been introduced in the first place.

What about that super tall kid who trained with us at the start of the year?

His folks posted here telling us that he was set for a basketball scholarship in the USA. Hopefully covid hasnt ruined this opportunity for him.

Mentioned in this article about the kids who missed out on the chance to push their case this year: https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-draft-2020-the-victorian-smokies-hurt-most-by-nab-season-shutdown/news-story/6c2c4b96dc13feaf9dec6f3f222557b0

Flanker/wingman Deakyn Smith, a natural footballer who played nationals at under-16 level, had worked hard on improving his skills – one of his deficiencies in the past – over the pre-season.

The player’s name is Deakin Pereira and he was at training at the club’s last training session for 2019.

His mother @kyliepereira was good enough to report on here how much Deakin enjoyed training and that he was due back early in the new year but was then off to try out in the States as a basketballer. He was projected to grow to 211cm.

Would be interesting to know how it all turned out - he did look massive and given our Covid-19 situation compared with over there, it would be interesting if he gave footy another go.

Amazing, in just paragraph the HS can describe someone as a 'natural footballer' and as having "skills deficiencies'...

As I expected, Melbourne did not nominate Kobi George and Deakyn Smith as Next Generation Academy nominations.

Kobi is in our “backyard”.  We need players of his ilk.  They can do the unbelievable on the footy field.

Well seems the club did not want his "ilk"..

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
