  1. Almost fun to do this exercise now! I didn't even want to do it last year: FB: Garland, Frawley, Clisby HB: Grimes, McDonald, Terlich C: , Watts, N.Jones, Vince HF: Trengove, Dawes, Howe FF: Hogan, Clark, Byrnes FOLL: Gawn,Tyson, Viney INT: McKenzie, Toumpas, Michie SUB: M.Jones EMERG:, Fitzpatrick, Blease, Spencer Still some holes, and like everyone else here would love to see Blease come on but just not sure that he will. Not sold at all on Strauss. Nice kick but he still ain't physical enough, and prone to rabbit in headlights mistakes. I'm sure people will argue about Byrnes but he's handy, and probably the only genuine FP/HFF small that we've got and he'll enjoy being at the feet of Clark, Dawes and Hogan.
  2. In the words of Ian Maurice...Thanks very max Michie!
  3. Great news. If anyone wonders what the difference will be between Roos and Neeld, here is a prime example. Neeld offers him a three year contract, Roosy comes in and tells Jamar what we've all known for ages...."You've had one good year in 10, see you later".
  4. This obsession about our chosen coach having to have won a flag previously is absolute rubbish. Robbie Flower never played in a final until his last season. Neither did Bobby Skilton. But Greg Madigan played in a Hawthorn Premiership side, and Aaron Keating for Adelaide. Who were the better players?!
  5. You might laugh, but I reckon the best recruiter we had was C. Schwab. Got Viney, Warren Dean, Spalding, Steven Stretch amongst others over a two year period from interstate, and they made a massive difference for us in '87. Perhaps he should have stuck to a career in recruiting!
  6. - Kicks and handballs that hit the target more often than not - greater effort to spread when we have it, particularly on the very long Subiaco - Davey continue his good form from last week - Win the contested ball and the tackles - Being in the game on the scoreboard for as long as possible Might be a bit too much to ask I'm afraid! Freo are a damn good side, as proven last week despite all of their outs. I can't believe that some people still think Ross Lyon is an average coach, he's superb.
  7. Good topic. His kicking would be top notch for all teams but in ours it shines like a beacon. The one yesterday where he had a couple of different options but split it open with the kick to Strauss who set up Dawes was absolutely superb. He's never going to get it 30 times a week but if he can apply defensive pressure to his man and get the pill 15 times he's going to be hugely damaging. We almost need two of him, one up forward for the crumbs and one at half back to set up play. I tend to agree with the suggestion of playing him high half forward/wing as I think that's where he will be most value.
  8. Didn't the Hawks do a swap with GWS for Anderson, similar to what we did with Barry? Barry looks like he'll take a couple of years but Anderson is ready made.
  9. Out of interest, what has Rivers said since his departure? I know he left for finals footy but haven't seen/heard him potting the club or the coach, did I miss something?
  10. Come on guys - what we need is the best young midfielder in the draft. We have to back ourselves to START developing young talent effectively, because getting a proven superstar won't solve that problem, nor will it help any of the other youngsters on our list. With the logic being expressed on this thread, we may as well trade Toumpas, Hogan and Viney as well, because they won't develop either. At the end of the day, we need to firstly understand the key reason why we haven't developed our young talent, and then put the best people/structures in place to ensure that we do in the future. Otherwise we may as well just shut up shop. And even if Hawthorn offered Buddy for pick 1, I wouldn't take it. We need tough, midfield ballgetters who can get it to our key forwards in the first place. Our recruiting has been too focussed on KPPs with very little focus on the midfield, which I find staggering given how bad our midfield has been for the last number of years. We MUST use the no 1 or 2 draft pick on a young gun and back ourselves that his natural ability and work ethic will enable him to be a star. Just because you're young and you play in a crap side doesn't mean you can't become a fantastic player - look at Harley Bennell, Toby Greene and Dylan Shiels as prime examples.
  11. More worried about what I see on the field than the presser. But when I click on the link and see that the presser lasts 17 minutes, I know that he's trying to explain too much and is likely to say something that the media will have a field day with. You look at the other press conferences on the AFL site - most last 6 or 7 minutes. If I was him I'd be keeping answers, simple, straight to the point and then getting the hell out of there.
  12. Is it just me or is he a spitting image of Shaun Burgoyne?! Exactly what we need in my book; class, poise, pace, kicking penetration. He might not have a frenetic attack on the footy but he's hardly weak. I'm sick of seeing our blokes turn it over all the time, if he's around at pick 4 and given we've already got a hard as nails mid like Viney, we have to take him.
  13. She's clearly got a vendetta, and I'm certain it's to do with Schwab. Always finds a way to mention him without ever really expressly going for the jugular. Has wanted him out for years and took great delight when it looked like he'd leave after 186. Seems she didn't get her man that time but is determined to do so this time.
  14. My first instinct when I read this question was Stinga, followed by Ox. Those two would be perfect in any era.
  15. My immediate reaction is disappointment because I always thought Gysberts would be a gun but surely, surely......with the experience we have in the FD (Craig, Rawlings, Leigh Brown etc) we must know what we're doing getting rid of him. I guess it's all about whether you have faith in the Neeld way, or you have doubts and think that the "type" that he is trying to have at the Dees is overdone. I'm on the fence at the moment....reckon I'll know by about Round 11.
  16. North seem worse than Essendon to deal with when it comes to trading, and that's saying something - keep holding out for better offers all the time. They refuse to give Port pick 15 and instead want to give 38 for Jacobs (who was pick 16 two years ago, is a good player but just wants to go home), they are happy to give Edwards to Richmond but are "holding out" for a better pick than 74, and with us they are happy to get rid of Pedersen but want something more than 49. It's clear that they think they can screw teams - our FD already paid slightly overs for Dawes and to an extent Hogan, which is absolutely fine as sometimes you need to do so, but let's hope they don't get stuffed by North on this Pederson/Gysberts thing. How Pedersen is worth any more than a 49 is beyond me....
  17. Never saw Hardeman but my old man tells me he was a star. I'm an 80s child and for me the most exciting backman was Seanus, but our best, by an absolute street, was Brett Lovett. Rarely if ever beaten, set play up beautifully with sweeping handballs, and was tough as teak when he needed to be. Clearly the best half back flanker in the comp for a few years on the trot from about 88-90.
  18. We've done well but reckon the Pies have done pretty well too - sure, you won't know for sure until we know how good their picks are but they've basically replaced like for like and picked up two free first round draft picks. Pretty good going really. Free agency has some great aspects to it but already I worry that it makes the strong clubs stronger.
  19. Apparently he believes that the development of the youngsters at Hawthorn will be accelerated if they all wear tracky dacks when they break through the banner, a philosophy the Hawks will clearly take on board
  20. Can we just go back and time and pretend that Andrew Gaff is still available at Pick 4 and take him instead? Cos he's the type we need!
  21. I thought Meredith was an umpire. At least the umpire would get to more contests than Cale.
  22. I'm all for getting Hogan - a gun CHF would be superb, and I know it's that word "potential" but he sounds like a gem to me. As long as we keep pick 4 for another midfield gun like Toumpas or Wines. I hope we're not silly enough to use pick 4 for a Dawes/Wellingham trade. As for Caddy, the guy seems totally overrated to me, and if he doesn't want to come, then let him go to the Cats and see if he can get a game there for the next two years.
  23. Let's hope it's a ruse to get the Eagles to pay a bit more for Wellingham. I can't believe that we'd give pick 4 for those two in a draft as good as this (even given our recent record)
  24. This is spot on. We've been too open for our own good about the fact that we will take Jack, and GCS know it, so they'll bid at 2. I am certain that we'll take him at 3, it would be an enormous backflip on our commitment to him that we didn't. Huge bonus if GCS don't bid but can't see it happening. Shame that we'll have to use pick 3 but at the end of the day he sounds to me like exactly the type of player we need. Thank god we still have pick 4 to get another gun youngster.
  25. Squibbed it twice in the Grand Final - once in the first qtr right in front of me in the members, and didn't Goodes give it to him. And then the more famous one in the last quarter. No thanks.
