Of course he would...and so he should. In reality it was more a jibe at the clubs ability than any actual directive. There are certain reailites, some call them "elephants' etc that cant be ignored. We NEED those two picks..and we need then as 1 and 2 to get best effect for US !! Scwabby knows it, Cuddles knows it, Jimma knows it , just about every journo knows it..and we know it...so Id probaly bet the house it hasnt escaped Bailey either. Thing is he cant come right out and say it. His job is to coach and portray a positive demeanor whilst rallying the team to higher climes etc. but he know it as well as anyone. Is he telling anyone to tank...(hmm whats left )..will bet the car he isnt. However you can pickj and choose your team for effect and give some "constraints" to on field roles etc. The other reality is at present in the grand scheme of things we arent that flash either. Bailey constantly refers to poor decisions etc. We make a lot of them . Not leading properly might well be one. Not kicking to the right 'spots' might be another . In a nutshell we are simply far from polished !!!

as per AFL site 1. 2009 NAB AFL Draft Gold Coast to have the capacity to sign 12 x 17 year-olds born in the January – April window (January 1 to April 30, 1992). 2. 2010 NAB AFL Draft Gold Coast to have first pick in each round Gold Coast to have selections 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 in round one 3. 2009 NAB Rookie Draft Gold Coast to have selections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 4. 2010 NAB Rookie Draft Gold Coast to alternate Queensland priority selections with Brisbane Lions. Gold Coast to have first selection 5. Zoned access Gold Coast to have zoned access to up to five Queensland players prior to each of 2010, 2011 and 2012 NAB AFL Drafts Gold Coast to have zoned access to up to three Northern Territory players prior to the 2010 NAB AFL Draft 6. 2010 Post-season, AFL listed player access Gold Coast to have capacity to pre-list 10 players who had previously nominated for the AFL Draft, or were previously listed with an AFL club. Gold Coast to have capacity to sign up to 16 uncontracted players Gold Coast would also have an expanded list size and TPP allowance in the club’s initial four years from 2011 to 2014, which would be as follows: 2011 – 48 senior list, nine rookies with $1m TPP extra allowance; 2012 – 46 senior list, nine rookies with $800k TPP extra allowance; 2013 – 42 senior list, nine rookies with $600k TPP extra allowance; 2014 – 40 senior list, nine rookies with $400k TPP extra allowance; 2015 – 38 senior list, nine rookies in line with other AFL clubs. As part of the entry rules for the Gold Coast side, the AFL Commission resolved that any club that lost a player to the expansion side would be eligible for a compensation pick (after the entry of both Gold Coast and the second club to be based in Sydney). Compensation picks will be tradeable and can be used by clubs at any time within five years. First round compensation picks cannot be used until the end of the first round in the 2010 and 2011 drafts. Clubs will be required to nominate the year in which they plan to use the compensation pick before the first round of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season in that particular year. The compensatory pick would be assessed around the player’s age (greater weighting for younger players), club contract ranking (greater weighting for club key players), onfield performance (greater weighting for strong club best and fairest performance) and draft position if less than four years experience. This ranking system will then determine if a club is eligible for a compensatory pick in one of five spots – first-round pick, end-of-first-round pick, second-round pick, end-of-second-round pick or third-round pick. Under the model, the round-one, round-two or round-three picks would be taken immediately after the pick the club already has in that round in the draft that year. Please find attached below an example of how the 2010 NAB AFL Draft would look, under these concession rules (indicative draft order before trading): Round one 1 Gold Coast 2 Gold Coast 3 Gold Coast 4 Club 16 on 2010 ladder 5 Gold Coast 6 Club 15 on 2010 ladder 7 Gold Coast 8 Club 14 on 2010 ladder 9 Gold Coast 10 Club 13 on 2010 ladder 11 Gold Coast 12 Club 12 on 2010 ladder 13 Gold Coast 14 Club 11 on 2010 ladder 15 Gold Coast 16 Club 10 on 2010 ladder 17 Club 9 on 2010 ladder 18 Club 8 on 2010 ladder 19 Club 7 on 2010 ladder 20 Club 6 on 2010 ladder 21 Club 5 on 2010 ladder 22 Club 4 on 2010 ladder 23 Club 3 on 2010 ladder 24 Club 2 on 2010 ladder 25 Club 1 on 2010 ladder Round two 26 Gold Coast 27 Club 16 on 2010 ladder 28 Club 15 on 2010 ladder 29 Club 14 on 2010 ladder 30 Club 13 on 2010 ladder 31 Club 12 on 2010 ladder 32 Club 11 on 2010 ladder 33 Club 10 on 2010 ladder 34 Club 9 on 2010 ladder 35 Club 8 on 2010 ladder 36 Club 7 on 2010 ladder 37 Club 6 on 2010 ladder 38 Club 5 on 2010 ladder 39 Club 4 on 2010 ladder 40 Club 3 on 2010 ladder 41 Club 2 on 2010 ladder 42 Club 1 on 2010 ladder Round three 43 Gold Coast 44 Club 16 on 2010 ladder 45 Club 15 on 2010 ladder 46 Club 14 on 2010 ladder 47 Club 13 on 2010 ladder 48 Club 12 on 2010 ladder 49 Club 11 on 2010 ladder 50 Club 10 on 2010 ladder 51 Club 9 on 2010 ladder 52 Club 8 on 2010 ladder 53 Club 7 on 2010 ladder 54 Club 6 on 2010 ladder 55 Club 5 on 2010 ladder 56 Club 4 on 2010 ladder 57 Club 3 on 2010 ladder 58 Club 2 on 2010 ladder 59 Club 1 on 2010 ladder

Im with you on this. 2009 Ought to be our last big drink at the watering hole then it should be topping up only from here on in. 2010 will be seriously constrained unless your name is Gold Coast. I was of the belief also that the normal practice of PP's would be modified to only come in prior to round two picks. Any which way we ought to start playing proper and decent footy next year. If not then we'll never start any climb off the bottom

Out of Africa Quite an interesting read and serves to reinforce ( for mine ) that there is a huge wealth of talent awaitng to be mined. Some years back I watched in fascination and excitement as a bloke called Paul Mugambwa plied his wares fro South Freo. Certainly more the rough diamond than the polished but the value of the gem was unmistakable. The amazing agility and skills were there, just not all of the footy nouse but then he wasnt brought up on Cornflakes, Meat Pies Kangaroos and Holden Cars !! But a new generation IS !!! If Rookie-ing is often about a bit of a puint then I think our club could fare a lot worse than looking into "other" areas and talent pools for the next smokey. Ireland is a known entity for skills etc and none other but our own esteemed "Jimma" is proof so it goes surely that there is more than one pool from which all players come. I hope Prendergast and his and of merry men have taken some thoughts towards looking in these directions

He has done nothing to show me why he went number 1 pick

Watts to have limited games one could almost be forgiven for thinking its very much along these lines -

So much hype..so much proverbial...so much of a lot of things. IN reality it matters not. A young player has had a taste and done ok. The world is still the same and the grass is still green as they say. In all likley hood Watss is probably better off for the most part of the rest of the season playing in the magoos. It wil laloow him time to focus on his VCE it will take him away from the spotlight and will be more in keeping with his current developmental path. Keep in mind he only really trains once a week and hasnt had a proper preseason yet. So Lethal says this or that...so what if its all taken out on context. Truth be told he hasnt lit the world yet. He was very unlikely too. Thats isnt his path or the program the clu has him on. We all know this so why is anyone surprised ? He will come along nicely. He only needs a few more seniors games this year the rest he can build on at a more temperate pace. Fine by me -
I agree phew !!!

if you want a more reailstic idea of differences in debuts look no further than Watts v Jurrah.. Chalk and cheese really. But I mean that as no slight to Watts . He is at a different place in terms of his personal development. I have no doubt he, JW, will come along quite nicely and really cant believe the anti hype towards him. Am happy for him NOT to set the world on fire htis season -
The thing that really excited me about that passage was that having actually NOT marked it his brain was already searching for what to do and he was acting/reacting in one continuous motion.. Qquite brilliant really... In a sense a lot of players can take speckies ( or miss them ..cough..Robbo..cough ) ut still making a silk purse out of a sours ears is a real art..and rare !! This is one bloke thats got X in spades !! Yep, he seemed quite at home out there. Once he got his bearings and got up to speed he was all over the place. As an indication of things to come...just drool material isnt it. We seldom have had that at Deeland !!

Bartram - 50/50 Bate - frustrating player #1 Bennell - back to magoos for while Bruce - frustrating player #2 Cheney - doing ok Davey - a rare beacon Frawley - terrific all night Green - lucky he's there Grimes - starting to impact Jetta - maggos for you ( for now ) Johnson - good without brilliance Jurrah - woohoo Martin - getting better n better McLean - good ..needs help though Miller - frsutrating player #3 Moloney - bled for jumper Morton - he was there ?? Rivers - shadow of self ;( Robertson - stop "starring" get playing !! Sylvia - starting to impress Watts - overshadowed by other newby !!! Whelan - au revoir !!

yeah..that'd be terrible huh !!! shame...

This is the conundeum really. Whilst you might respect the efforts..( selfless or otherwise ) of players for what are varying reasons it all boils down to results. Its a usiness..the business of winning and in particular the only realy measure is premierships. We are entitled to judge temas, indeed its players coaching and others accordingly. They play..we watch..its kinda simple. They play poorly or not up to expectations ( real or hyped ) and the measure is rought out and reviewed. For all anyones postulating and grandstanding... you play poorly because of injury...hey ..you still played poorly !! Reasons and excuses are just that. They dont change the result. They mitigate but dont change. AS Hannabal and others would suggest..you cross that line you are playing for keeps. Maybe its a little wiser NOT to play and get seriously fit and THEN play your heart out..that'd be more inteligent a thing for mine

Toad..whilst I understand the position you take. my thougths are neither without lack of thought or without reason. Its all verywell to say you simply take the best availale.. thats a tad glib and cliche.. alow me..to elaborate You can only get rid of so many each year. WHo you get rid of over the next five years is VERY much governed by whom you replace them with as the drafts will be slim pickings..especially as we start to rise and get further from the glow ( as it were ) We ( MFC ) have to think smart...very smart...take the best but the best for particular roles. If you clear out Dunn and Miller then you might have rom for another tall up the sharp end. The argument of creating hunger amongst competing players is all well and good...So do we use an early pick to grab a player who wont see too many opportunities for quite some while..and or bundle out another like pick ?? Notthe smartest way to use picks I would have thought .. We lack the ability to monster the middle. Id be leaning this way. There is no simple answer.. as the season progresses and development shows how we are looking and the guns of tomorrow start to jockey for position then a clearer picture will present. Butcher is only one of a number of contestants..and not a lay down misere just yet

Just quietly its rather presumptuous to afford all and any accolades or detractions purely on one facet..i.e height. Can only prove any accompanying rhetoric as one dimensional at est...and at worst ??...well....lol You have to ask the question(s) as to what we need in the context of the next 3-4 years and are we attempting to draft a couple of ready ( or nearly ) mades or continue the farm and developing players. Just exactly how many forwards..tall and crumbing do we need ? With likes of Watts and Jurrah supported by Maric and Wonna who else and in what capacity do we need ? The team isnt full by any means but it could start to get crwoded up there..!! The middle however needs serious overhaul if we are to step up. Forget what this and that player are..or supposedly at the club at present the simple reality is as a comined midfield we are well off the pace and if you dont think so you are either watching a completely different league or in need of a pharmacy !! Rucking... well we may or may not be coverered by Meesen and Spencer... with Russian surpising as well. We can get forwrd power sorted if only proper and consistant delivery is created. Defence seems to be solidifying. So Scully seems a monty...at the moment ut as others rightly suggest..where was Watts earlier in peoples sights last year ? uthcer may be handy but I have a feeling Predergast and co have some specific criteria . quick edit: Many a goal is now kicked by forward ranging midfielders. Its not all down to the forwards Keep going as we are and we'll have 1,2 and probably 19 ( if another gets a 2nd round pp ) ..we may get a surprise at 35...if lucks a fortune. so 1 and 2 must be used very wisely..its last gas for many miles for many years. SO we ought to keep a good look at Morabito happening...but look at many. Keep in mind If you got Butcher..whose possie does he take..repeat question for anyone who's a prospect.. and then see which positions are easiest to supplant..This then shapes the shopping list.

Move over Richmond, Dees in the firing line.
beelzebub replied to barpen's topic in Melbourne Demons
A very valid point re these players. Still a whole lot more to come. Sadly I think Bate and Jonesy may have peaked. Hopefully Nathan can learn better decision making..but even so there is a hell of a lot of potential still to be realised. I would agree with Sheahan that Melbourne has snuk through without too much spotlight but most likely cause is that Richmond has brought much on itself. The Dees have been reinventing iteself both on and off the field and I think we are genuinely progressing along the right sort of paths. Richmond after all its time ought to have accomplished much more by now in consideration of its position on the merry go round. We are really having only just got back on it ( merrygo round ) and starting out ( again, but this time thoroughly and properly ) and so expectations ought to be in line with that. If in 3 years time we are still floundering then all the criticisms leveled would probably not being doing us its deserved justice. Maybe we are just a hell of a lot smarter than the Toiges -
I can only hope that as a team we would have 18 blokes on the paddock backing themselves. Its when they dont..when they second guess...dont react in time.. or in laymans's essentially f*#@ up that we are in the most doo doo. Am happy that a player with ability and some footy nouse will indeed evaluate on the spot and take decisive steps as result. Some call this arrogance ...ut its not really if that is exactly what you are called upon to do..i.e PLAY !!..or as Kennedy says... DO...not think !!

Move over Richmond, Dees in the firing line.
beelzebub replied to barpen's topic in Melbourne Demons
well..you can make of that what you want ( the article ) Essentially truths but not necessarily in context of what the club ( ne Bailey ) is attempting to do this year..that is fly under the radar, get a bit of game time in some new legs..dont show "too" much but enough to get an idea of who is coming along; pick up the best two picks in the draft and a few others..and get serious come seasons end.. What on earth is achieved by cowtowling to the scripted panderings of the press etc. Nothing !! We had a younger team if you counted in gametime in relevance to age etc. Yes Hawthorn HAVE gone the right way.. and thats where we will be in '10. -
I have been as vociferous as any regarding the goods ..or bads of this bloke. He certainly has given many cause for concern , frustration, disdain etc etc etc. I until recently would have only been too glad to see the back of him. Hes stepped up to the plate and had a swing. More than that he seems to have learnt the errors of his past. Now he needs to cement this with the rest of the season. If he still shows his mettle then for mine he has every right to be considered for the leadership group.. He is after all showing leadership in its true form ..i.e by example. He doesnt have too many brethren giving him a week in week out hand now does he ? Fair's fair !! we shovel the [censored].. we can take it too
-
really..does it matter or not ?? this is a dead season.. MFC's future might currently reside Brighton... but its still just 2009.. who cares how many games he actually plays this year..I just want hit fit and firing NEXT year !!
-
Watts the big problem ?? So he possibly only plays a few more games this season. Given the reasonable assumption he wil be at least a 10 year player does the dif between 4 or 11 more games this year really have any significance. Better he develop and realise his potential rather than play out some sort of glamour "role" ?? two words... List management.... that or Common Sense !!
-
I could very well envisage a sort of Hawthorn effect should we see real success. Given a steady climb upwards with sustained results the notion of 40-45000 is entirely approachable. I have no doubt such 'numbers" occasionally enter teh minds of Stynes et al. SHould the club realise the potential of becoming the classic world stage club it could be then who knows where membership could go. We're a unique club with unique potential

Been thinking of this all year.... that is, what happens years end and who becomes disposable and whom is able to be repatriated elsewhere etc. In thinkig about all this it came to me that the reality of what we will do is governed by what we CAN do. My thinking is along the lines of....the number of players we can expunge is directly proportional to those we can get. This equates to how many we can draft and or trade. Given th elack of perceived depth in this years draft then we ought not be expecting terribly much beyond pick 34. So thats 4 pickups ( of varying ability ) . Now it is very likely that Junior will retire end of season. SO too Wheels. Robbo is an each way bet Id sugeest at present. If he sparks then he'll get another year.If he doesnt then its sayonara rockstar. Lets say s he does retire. Thats 3. Its not that hard to probably add to that list with about 4-5 players who really ought to go...but who will replace them. We might get a trade.. but whom would really get a look. Jones might; possibly even Juice may get a squiz from a deluded ( ne desperate ) club. Some clus might put out feelers for the likes of Jared and Bate but dont hold your breath.. No..I thought the purge hasnt been throught enough in recent years and some lucky buggers will get to hang on by the scruff of their necks..simply as there are enough players to fill their spots. Not unless the club simply feels like a real lucky dip come seasons end. Still...could be worse...we could do nothing !!
-
the last I was aware was that they had a plan to get a plan <_< The "Red and Blueprint" has yet to be shown to we lil folk called members !!
