May and Lever - Best Defenders in Last 20 Years?
That would be a very big surprise. He should be dropped for Petty.

6 pages in and no one has mentioned the proverbial bathwater. We do like to admire our own work at times. @Pates has given a great example of proper application and attitude during the Hawthorn final. Unfortunately we followed it up with an embarrassing prelim performance. Never fired a shot.

I think soft describes Rd23 2017 pretty well. How can a team turn up with a finals spot on the line, against an opponent with only pride to play for, and not lay a tackle? Nothing to do with skill, game plan or injuries and everything to do with mindset. Proper teams would never let it happen. The whole 2019 season was soft. We were absolutely pathetic from top to bottom. You can;t tell me it was just injuries and bad coaching (although these were factors, no question). We felt sorry for ourselves so put the cue in the rack. Soft as butter.

May and Lever - Best Defenders in Last 20 Years?
Frawley went ok. I'd have him ahead of Lever at this stage.

The disparity between our best and worst, the fade-outs and inability to arrest momentum suggest mental fragility and/or lack of accountability to me. No fan of McClure but I think he’s right on this one.

Here we go again
Trust me, I’ve got my knives sharpened for Goodwin, but I think it’s premature to pass verdict based on a pre-season game where our second string got towelled up by a full-strength doggies side. Let’s give it 4 or 5 games to see if we’ve addressed the flaws in our game before passing judgment. If we’re 1-4 then by all means release the hounds.

I agree. It was almost like he was playing in a practice game

Winger, winger, chicken dinner?!
Hard to fathom why we ignored Phillips when he was such an obvious solution to a problem area. If he's good enough for Alastair Clarkson then he's good enough for us. He was pretty good on Saturday against an admittedly poor North. I can only assume he either didn't want to join or there were cap constraints. I know there's a season to play out before then but we have to offer up a midfielder this trade period. Perhaps Brayshaw and a pick for Kelly? We've tried to make do with what we have and it just isn't working.

Melbourne midfielders have to park egos
Hard to square what we read in the newspapers over the weekend to what we saw yesterday. Skills let us down under pressure, poor tackling, labored ball movement. All the familiar faults and failings. And none of the "egos" were playing either! We have 2 weeks to the Freo game so time to sharpen up. And please no more articles telling us what you're going to do this season. Show us against Freo instead.

POSTGAME: Practice Match vs Bulldogs
I’m not fussed about the result against a full strength bulldogs outfit. They’re a good side and will play finals. As usual they did a third quarter number on us. Most of our senior players did alright, May Lever Maxy Trac Fritsch I’ve no worries about. TMac on the wing won’t work. He is too slow and his disposal is too suspect. Play him forward or drop him. I would have liked to see Harmes go to the Bont. I know we have systems and structures but why not shut down the oppo’s best player. I’m not sure Harmes has a role in the side if he’s not tagging. Very iffy disposal from Langdon. I hope he sharpens up over the next 2 weeks. The kids struggled so we’re going to have to be patient while Chocco works his magic. Freo is the test. I watched them last night. We have nothing to fear there. Forward set-up will be key but I reckon we’ll need a strong contribution from Trac with some other midfielders hitting the scoreboard as well. Get the 4 points, build momentum before the saints at Marvel. BB back for Rd 3 to straighten us up. A fit and firing BB will make a big difference. Go Dees
