You can't just be a player who ONLY contributes with off the ball efforts. Frost was all about off the ball efforts, and the FD finally woke up to the fact that he's a liability up forward. And I don't think that Dawes has much of a game to sacrifice. He's proven to be ineffective when he's our main key forward. I agree with Fifty Five, he's actually competing with Watts for a position, and I don't see Watts getting dropped in a hurry.

But in this instance, why would Melbourne grant the request? The club would back itself in the final year of his contract to persuade Hogan to stay. His manager could try to pull a stunt like McCarthy's manager, but look how badly that turned out for everyone.

Exactly. The compensation MAY net you an A grader if you're lucky, but it's highly improbable that you'll land a potentially elite KPF like Hogan. Hutchy on Footy Classifieds got laughed at by Judd, Lloyd and Wilson when he suggested that Richmond should trade Delideo for a 1st round pick. That 1st round pick would probably come from a contending team, so you're looking at pick 12-18 for an A grader. Madness.

Have to agree. I've grown to dislike him over time due to his perceived arrogance, but he actually makes the show watchable again. The Hutchison/Barrett combo was deplorable, Lloyd is average and Caro talks little about the actual football. Unlike Hutchison and Barrett, Judd's analysis was reasoned and without hyperbole.

Even if fit, I don't think that Dawes is our best option with our more attacking gameplan. For starters, most of our ball movement is generated through the centre corridor, and Dawes tends to lead to the flanks. He can't play as a 2nd ruckman, and I don't think that he can apply much forward pressure. Hopefully he can help Weid down at Casey.

You hit the nail on the head. An umpire can have a preconceived idea that a particular ruckman (Goldstein) gets regularly infringed, and is always on the lookout for any contact. In our game against North, the umpire somehow missed Goldstein grabbing Gawn first, and paid a free against Gawn when he barely touched Goldstein. IMO, the umpire was looking for the free. What I found disturbing was our game against the Tigers when Reiwoldt was complaining to umpire Stephens (Hawthorn supporter) about being blocked when going for marks. The umpire's response was "I'm looking at it". That's just plain wrong. The umps response should always be "I'll call it if I see it".

Spot on. If Newton, Michie and ANB were given extended senior games like Kent, Bugg and Harmes, I don't think we'd lose much. Each have their strengths and weaknesses.

I also think that a successful Casey is important for Weideman's development as well. It wouldn't be much fun playing down at Casey on a cold wintery day, and being starved of opportunities as a key forward. As for Newton, I was a bit of a rap for him last year. Endurance seemed to be his biggest knock, but his kicking skills are amongst the best at the club. I think he's got more strings to his bow than Michie, and better disposal than ANB. If Kent's inconsistent form continues, he could get a gig as a half forward.

If fit, Lumumba and Salem are walk up starts. Prior to last week when both got concussed, they were important from rounds 3 - 5. I'd like to see Dunn back in the side at the G. He's a good match up for Redpath. But for some reason, he's out of favour. Ins: Lumumba and Salem Out: Garland and Michie I hope that they don't drop Stretch after 1 game for a 3rd time this year. And I pray that the Frost as a forward experiment is done and dusted.

I've been supporting Man City for nearly as long as I've supported MFC, but I wanted the Foxes to win the title head of Man City. It's a fantasitic story because it reaffirms my belief that coaches can make a difference if they can instill belief amongst the players. Ranieri had none of this BS of taking 2 years to teach the players how to defend, before they learnt how to attack. None of this BS about a rebuild. It was all about getting results on the field from day 1. The greatest coaching achievement in the history of sport.

IF you read the article in full rather than the few sentences highlighted by the OP, you'll find that Richardson doesn't say that they made a mistake with their strategy. He outlines that without the mature aged recruits, they probably would have bottomed out, and had to go through the draft. He then explains that all the top end talent was going to GWS, so bottoming out wasn't an option. The article is just a headline grab by the journo. He takes one sentence out of context, and away he goes.

The obvious candidate would have been Frost. His only asset is his athleticism, so why not use it.

Everyone is quick to stick the boots into Richmond, but their lack of higher success has nothing to do with their rebuild strategy. Firstly, they haven't been able to land a big fish via Free Agency or trading, but they're not the only club that have failed in this pursuit (Freo, Melbourne). Compare that to the other clubs battling for a top 4 position in recent years like Hawthorn, North, Geelong, Swans and Collingwood. They've all landed more than 1 big fish in recent years. Secondly, none of their high draft picks since Martin have developed into very good AFL players (B graders), let alone become A graders. Whether it's poor recruiting or list development, neither has anything to do with their rebuild strategy. They've won 15, 12, 15 home and away games in the past 3 seasons, which is a far cry from what we've achieved in 10 years. I'm more concerned about where our latest rebuild is taking us than sticking the boots into RIchmond.
