Why don't you like Carroll.

1. Carroll is shocking at contested marks

2. His kicking disposal is ordinary

3. No FB should be slow like Carroll is

4. His decision making can be very questionable

Anyone that thinks Carroll is the FB that will win us a flag is delusional. He has done Ok for a rookie.

This from someone who doesn't realise how good Judd is.

Carroll's pace is his best asset.

Carroll is fine, he aint Scarlett but...

A FB who can't take a contested mark, who gives a flying rats if the bloke he is playing on also doesn't take it. FB don't need to kick either.

Let's not forget that Carroll was touted year before last as unlucky to miss out on AA to Rutten.

Carroll is a massive dickhe@d but as a FB he's hardly our most pressing issue.

This is the rather ignorant opinion that my Dad shares, and it sh*ts me to tears having to sit next to him at the footy and listen to him carry on about how slow players are, when in fact it is not the case.

Carroll is not especially quick, I don't think (however this might be due to his brain rather than his legs), but the fact is, all defenders are going to look slow when the ball is coming in lace-out for the forwards to lead to. You only need to look at 2006 to appreciate that he is a solid full-back. In 2006 our midfield was fierce and put plenty of pressure on the opposition midfielders, thus hindering their ability to deliver the ball to the chest of a leading forward. In 2007 we got cained in the middle, and accordingly our defenders had to watch, more or less helpless, as the opposition mids speared passes onto the chests of their forwards.

You put Scarlett in our team this year, instead of Carroll, and the improvement would have been scarce. Scarlett gets killed just as much as any other full back when his midfield doesn't do the hard work. Look at last year; at the start, especially, everybody was saying how out of sorts Scarlett was. However, Geelong were getting killed most weeks and he couldn't do a bloody thing about it.

Carroll is not as good as Scarlett, and he never will be, because he does not have the football nous that Scarlett has. But as much as he drives me bonkers at times, he is a solid defender, and good enough when our midfield is on top.

a solid defender yes... a fullback NO !! we desperately need a grade 1 fullback. Hopefully one of our picks might be used to addres this.

I don't think he's a great fullback; there are obviously better ones. But in spite of what people are saying here, he is definitely good enough to hold down the spot in the absence of a superior option (which we currently do not have).

And yes, I would hope that pick 21 at least would be used on a tall. As I put somewhere else, Joel Smouha might be a good choice. He has pace (yay!) and good endurance, based on his beep test and 3km time trial at the draft camp. From what I've read, he is still quite raw, but has some talent, and could be a good option as a KPP at either end.

Palmer Palmer Palmer. Our midfield is screaming out for a player like him.

We have NO pace. Not a dicky bird. With pace comes clearances, running through the lines, and kicking running goals. Palmer is solid, quick, and skillful. I can tell you straight off that if you asked him, he would say he modelled his game on Chris Judd. You can just see it in the way he plays.

Yeah i think your right. i will ask him next time i see him, its definately judd or cousins...... not sure though

As to Carrol, you can say what you like about midfield pressure, but he is often beaten in one on one marking contests not involving a lead. Aside from this he is not terrible and is a very serviceable fullback, but not a premiership fullback.

It would be great to have a Scarlett like FB.

A bad FB can be hidden with midfield dominance, that is what I am saying about Carroll...

We are playing well - Carroll good

We aren't playing well - Carroll bad

AA Full Backs are those that do less, because they are sheltered by their midfield.

And FB isn't the most pressing issue.

CHF, FF, mental fortitude of senior players - these are the most pressing issues going forward.

Cale Morton will not be at West Coast

i keep telling people this!!!

fremantle fans have suggsted a trade be done of

Dockers - Pick 4

Demons - Pick 7 and Ryan Murphy

what do you think

only down a few spots, and would let us take a rance/mcevoy or a rioli/masten/palmer if one slips a bit AND gives us a gun forward

Haha yes, I'm a big Palmer fan. Having said that, though, as per the other thread, I would still take Cotchin before him. If Palmer is available at Pick 4, and Cotchin wasn't, I think we should have absolutely zero hesitation in snaring him. I would ACCEPT but be distinctly less pleased if we took any of Rance, McEvoy or Ebert though. I'm coming Ebert after reading something that Kevin Sheehan wrote in the Hun today... about him being the archetypal complete midfielder, or something to that effect. I don't know why that should be, as I happen to think Sheehan is a right tool (No pace means Brock McLean won't make it? Fail, Kevin), but there are plenty of others who rate the boy.

However, I reiterate my allegiance to the Palmer camp. I'm firmly in it, and my tent is pitched. Make of that what you will...

Yes I am a fan of Palmer too plus he is a cutie!! Very much like Col in the hottie dept and would fit in well. Seriously tho, from all reports he is a pretty damn fine player and we would be nuts if we passed on him for Rance or Henderson or McEvoy etc.. you have to take best available.

If possible trade for another top 10 pick but thats looking unlikely now.

Perhaps Bails can turn a P Johnson or Jamar ( if he stays) into a KPP. Re-invent them and make them a winner. They are huge guys and ok havent set the world on fire ruck wise but with Meesen coming over we are not going to need them all.

If its true and Jamar has got another contract, Bails has plans for him and perhaps thats it.

Back to the point of the thread - Palmer for me but I wouldnt be devastated if Cotchin got through as he is a bit of a hottie too. ;o) - ooooh and he can play as well!!!!!!

Can someone please explain to me why this " gun " forward can't even get into their team regularlyl It seems we are eager to "love" players at other clubs and trash our own. I would look at him but I would think he is a pick 21 at best.

Forget any aspirations of getting Cotchin. It will go 1. Kreuzer; 2.Cothcin; 3. Morton (or possibly Cotchin and Morton reversed if the Tigers get Mitch Morton from the WCE). They are the three standouts (direct from one of the Saints recruiting scouts). He believes Melbourne will go for one of Masten or Lachie Henderson depending on what the Demons see as the greatest need - midfield or KPP. He thinks both will be very good but Henderson may take a little while.

Its all revolves around that pick 3. if , as I have always thought WCE settle on pick 3 and abandon ( accept reality ) on pick 1 then that 3rd selection may not necessarily go the way its been mooted. As result I seriously think melbourne have only a rough idea of who they will land at 4 simply because its not a dead cert who wil stil be there at that early point.

id rate Cotchin as maybe a 30% chance

I don't want us going anywhere near anyone with OP which means Masten and Ebert.

If it is a toss up between a tall and a small we should pick up the tall.

I'm not sold on Palmer. He does look good but he reminds me too much of Sylvia.

Seems quite stocky already and I read he doesn't have great pace.

I agree wholeheartedly re any known cases of OP.. its just a minefield. Lets some other club take that chance..

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
