Mark and Goal of the Year

I realise that the finals are included in both of these awards, but with only four nominations left, I wanted to get the ball rolling.

My top 6 so far :

MARKS

Rd 3 - M.McVeigh [Ess] vs Carlton

Rd 9 - J.Brown [bris] vs Collingwood

Rd 15 - P.Chapman [Geel] vs Collingwood

Rd 16 - M.Newton [Melb] vs Kang, B.Staker [WCE] vs Syd - joint nom 41% of the vote each

Rd 17 - A.Edwards [Kang] vs Hawthorn

Rd 19 - T.Croad [Haw] vs Brisbane

No real standouts. Newton, McVeigh and Chapman were spectacular high marks, but I get the feeling big Johnno Brown will win with his amazingly courageous mark against the Pies at the Gabba in Round 9.

GOALS

Rd 1 - R.Robertson [Melb] vs St Kilda

Rd 5 - Alwyn Davey [Ess] vs Collingwood

Rd 6 - D.Headland [Frem] vs Brisbane

Rd 13 - D.Motlop [Port] vs Brisbane

Rd 15 - D.Pearce [Port] vs WCE

Rd 20 - M.Lloyd [Ess] vs Carlton

Plenty of great goals. Aaron Davey vs Carlton Rd 14, Fevola vs St Kilda Rd 17 & Dustin Fletchers big bastard bomb vs the Saints in Rd 4 were all close to my top 6. Any of the top six would be worthy of winning, but Daniel Pearces effort against WCE at AAMI stadium in Round 15 just in front.

Thoughts?

i still think the best goal of the year was yzes backwards banana from the boundary the week fletcher won it...unfortunately he is now out of the running...

mark of the year, im not sure if he won but richos speccy against collingwood a couple of weeks ago was something special, otherwise i thought newton flew pretty well...

Oh yeah i forgot he didnt even win goal of the week. Fletcher beat him. Voting is rediculous, player who plays for the team with more supporters = winner.

Yep, it's a massive flaw in the system. You don't want to go up against a Leon Davis goal or Anthony Rocca mark, no matter how much better your nomination is.

As good as Newtons mark was against the Kangas, he shared the Round 16 nomination with Brent Staker with 41% of the vote. So a vote or two the other way, and both Yzes goal and Newtons mark wouldn't have even been in the running. That to me is reason to change the voting system next year.

I reckon that he was behind on percentage with Staker a few % ahead, however given that Newton's was the best mark, the AFL decided to rig it so that Newton was eligible (as he should have been). This just proves the flaws in the system.

They should go back to the way they did it when 'Rex Hunts footy panel' was on, all those years ago. Great show with Scotty Palmer "keep on punching Sandy"

 If Newton was playing for Collingwood when he took that mark, it would still be bloody obvious to moi that it was the best mark of the year!

Motlop GOTY.

MOTY: Newton. Bias and it was a bloody good mark.

GOTY: Dale Thomas Collingwood at the G about 4 to 5 weeks ago. Dodged three players on the boundary and snapped truly.

Thomas' was a contender for out of bounds of the year?

Newton and Motlop for me. Can't beat a 50m banana from the boundary. Ridiculous kick.

The voting system is an absolute farce. Then again, I'm not sure how much better it would be if it was decided by media "experts" either. Subjective awards are always cause for controversy though.

For me, Newton is the clear mark of the year. Fletcher's goal in Round 4 was the third best goal. For the round! Yze's was an absolute cracker that defied the laws of physics. My vote goes to ashley Hansen's goal at Subi. Incredible.

I think Newton's mark should win.

It's like a duplicate to Shaun Smith's a few year's back - He one Mark Of The Century.

I think Juice has got it in the bag...

i'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Franklin's goal at half time. That would be the favourite at the moment.

It was a great goal, but wasn't even nominated that week [Rd 19].

Dean Cox won that week from Nathan Brown and Nathan Foley.

All of my selections were from the offical MOTY & GOTY nominations from the AFL website.

Hence Franklin and Yze etc don't get a mention.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
