GAMEDAY: Rd 03 vs Carlton

Droppping Rivers hasn't been the difference here, obviously, but it's still an early learning opportunity for King.

Not only did we lose an experienced player in a light bodied and developing team but he's set a silly precedent now - most the team should be dropped after this performance if Rivers was fair game.

I like what King wants to do with game style and accountability but he just needs to temper it a bit in the early stages, dropping Rivers after R2 was dumb.

Let Alan Richardson coach.

Then sign John Longmire next year.

King is a spud.

SOFT SOFT SOFT

There's a few exceptions (Maxy, Sharpe, Koz, Mihocek?) but most of these boys are not at AFL level in terms of fitness, strength (gym) and general skills.

For the most part it looks like they're playing a scratch match against a local club in Seymour early in the first week or two of a pre-season.

Seriously under-prepared in all facets.

Did we carry over the same fitness crew from the last two seasons?

For me I can handle that we are way too light on around the ball. It was always going to be a problem, and it’s proven to be.

What I think we really need to coach is how we want to move the footy. We seem to have stagnated after the first game (and what I saw in Preseason). It feels like with the step up in pressure the players don’t have the same confidence to run, and aren’t honouring the short 45 angled kicks. Koz is trying but he wants to bang it forward instead of going short and challenging the zone to press up.

I don’t care about getting beaten, but I wanna see what we want to be in 3 years - even just a couple of times a quarter. Haven’t seen enough the last few weeks.

a question for those who know about these things. what happened that we won the quarter?

I’m taking no pleasure from that fact we are putrid. just curious …

Winning the quarter means we kicked more points then Carlton which means we’ve won the quarter

The funny thing is, the Blues can still lose this

They had us on toast. Should be 50pts+ and game over

Langdon, Culley, Windsor need to fire up!

*Amongst many others

In the second half I would love to see these highly skilled professional athletes

-mark the ball when it is kicked to them

-pick up the ball when it is near them

-catch the ball when it is hand balled to them

-kick the he ball to each other, rather than to the opposing team or to nobody at all

If we can succeed at these core skills I think we might get to watch a professional football team

I’d add to this list the following:

-kick it between the big sticks.

What happened to our supposed speed - they are first to everything

We are moving so fast that we can’t be seen by the naked eye.

Should not have dropped Riv. We need to lift. Letting Carlton look like a way better side than what they really are. We need to lift. We don’t look like the same team that won here 2 weeks ago

Not only that, as good as Paddy has been on occasions last season, he looked a mile off it in the opening round last week. Yes he had plenty of friends but he certainly never earned this call up

And not blaming him by any means. Very strange call.

Haven’t you told us on more than one occasion that you’re done here?

A man with fortitude would have kept his promise

I don’t get how you can play like we did against the Saints, executing, fast play style and then you come and do this. Bloody embarrassing. The should be ashamed of their performance.

God do we miss the likes of Trac, May and Oliver of olden times. Sure they butched the ball, but at least they got some of it. Even in their form last year, they would get more touches than this insipid midfield.

We have a bunch of soft players, who are all mentally weak.

So I've arrived home after listening to the 1st half in the radio.

Got the tv on to see if we really are this bad. Surely we've got to come out better

Can someone answer something. From level 4 of the G Checkers kick to Windsor look to go 20-25 metres. Was it just the angle I was on, or did it look ok on TV too?

Alright, I'm calling it

We will come back and win this

IF we can kick straight

Pretty dire - Blues are not good, but we simply have nothing in the middle. Unfortunately, this will not change this year.

Lots of clutching at straws here.

Time to promote Bailey Laurie into the midfield and see what he can do. At the moment we have a team of plodders.

No one stuck their hand up last week.

Laurie was one of many who had a bog ordinary first up game imv.

While it's only the first up game and early days for Casey, we'll have to wait at least two to three weeks before we can say where any of the VFL boys are at and whether they're playing at a level that deserves a look at this level.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
