POSTGAME: Practice Match vs North Melbourne

Featured Replies

North were poor but I thought we were fantastic.

Kozzy is an A+er.

We seemed to have a really good balance between aggressive zone defence, which we know we're good at, and continuing the fast ball movement and transition we started last year.

I hope we play Howes either wing or high half back. He's dangerous out on the wing their and his foot skills are good, mixed with his height.

Maybe Langford moves inside permanently and Howes takes the wing...

Be interesting to see how we go against Richmond...

They were short 4 of their best, we had 3 of ours in Gawn, Viney, and Mihocek missing >3/4’s and maybe Culley out.

Plus Bowey and Petty who would be walk-up starters. That makes 5 of our best 22, 6 if you count Culley.

In Fairness North were missing:

Corr, Wardlaw, McKercher, McDonald, Spargo, Urquhart, Fisher, Dawson, Goad, Thredgold, Curtis, Mikuda, Goater, George, Jackson, Whitlock, Stevens, Banch, Trembath

They will be a much tougher proposition in the season proper

Over half of those lads aren’t best 23 players, some weren’t played cause they just weren’t picked

My thoughts from watching the highlights;

Holy [censored] we kicked more than 60 points.

Holy [censored] we kicked more goals than behinds.

Latrelle is a gun. Unsure of how he was not picked up until now.. confusing really.

Steele is brilliant.

Kozzie scary good (more team player as well than his usual)

We look fast, and fit. Hopefully that lasts.

They look like they’re having fun.

Good work Kingy and co.

Go Dees.

Dees have planned well for the Tassie drafts - loaded up in advance.

Love or hate our recruiting department and their track record over the last few seasons, I think they've nailed our approach to this.

Langford, Lindsay, Windsor, Tholstrup and now Latrelle and Taylor. Plus we'll have at least another two first rounders to play with at the end of this season.

Those two main highlights of Latrelle excited me more because he looked for and kicked to a target forward than for the speed and running. Being able to run and weave without it consuming all your mental bandwidth is pretty valuable even if you aren't super quick.

Running like a wild thing might just be his version of wait-and-see!

But does taking a bounce every five steps count as padding your stats? Was he at some point coached by one of the Shaw brothers?

Regardless of who played and who didn’t for both sides…North have got serious problems if they play that way in the upcoming season.

Time and time again, it was short kick to pocket, another short kick, then kick down the line to where there is always a contest by this time …turnover…

Caleb Daniel is a liability, since he has no other option other than short kicks. The result is no movement or attack from their backline. Just accumulates meaningless statistics.

Impressed with Heath, who more than held his own against a top 3 ruckman in Xerri. He is definitely advantaged by the new ruck rules.

Kentfield should have just written himself a round 1 spot. Rucks, strong mark and can play forward as well. And kicks straight.

Howes impressive as well, with Darling, Larkey and Zurhaar totally outclassed by our backs. Again Norths only modus operandi is to kick it long to them and hope they can mark it, because none of them have any mobility.

Hopefully we have some better competition next week, so we can make a proper judgement of where we sit.

The roos have been down for a long time and based on today it looks like another season in the bottom 3-4. I feel for them getting done by 10 goals by a side that only finished 6 points ahead of them last year. I have a couple of long time friends who are North susporters.

It’s February. And it was 30 degrees. Don’t look too much into it

In spite of the opposition, or lack thereof, great result for the players after a pre-season of hard work. Wouldn't hurt their confidence in the new direction.

Remains to be seen where this gets us once we're up against serious opposition, but you couldn't have asked for more.

Echoing others' comments re some of the newer players. Heath and Kentfield in particular stood out for me. Moose is already a better ruck than anyone we've had coming through since I don't know when, and you'd think that the succession plan is assured. Then Kentfield just really looks like a player. Not sure of his role or even whose spot he takes, but surely we see him sooner rather than later. JVR would be looking over his shoulder.

Jeffo must be doing something amazing at training to be ahead in the pecking order in front of Kentfield

Photos of Goody ... oh, wait.

Are replays available on Kayo?

Yes

I'm not saying our midfield/forward connection has magically been fixed in the off-season, but how good was it to see our midfielders actually LOWERING THEIR EYES when kicking inside 50 instead of bombing it long.

There were a lot of positives with the way JVR presented and is hitting up at the ball. He’s always going to be a bit 2 grabby and drop a few but he looks ready to do the hard work across half forward. You can’t play this style of footy without guys busting their backsides at half forward.

Not Jeffo’s best day but I think his role changed after Mihocek went down early. I still think the way he gets back on to the footy after contests and can use the ball as a link player are attributes we just need to get games into. Promisingly today at least he wasn’t outmarked too often.

Can we play all 4 tall forwards or do we go 3 and give Luker the nod for the ruck work? Not sure we’ll have a clear answer for a few rounds at least.

Interesting perspective re your comments and feel for the game. I haven't seen any of the game. As a big Jeffo fan, I would be interested in yours and anyone else's opinion today, did he move around, did he present, did he compete ??? Look really happy to hear of the. Big Moose and Kentfields great game. Clearly Mihocek is a superb pickup, but wont play next week. Could come down to Jeffo or Luker for round 1. Can anyone else see this??

Yes agree. North were witches hats today. Zero defensive pressure around the ground. Zero run. Disappointing really.

Hope Richmond really tighten the screws on us next week and force us into uncomfortable situations to see how we handle them. They will play with flair and run at the very least I’d imagine which will test our ability to curb their offensive run. Much better test.

Today was a great confidence booster for the guys which hopefully also helps instil belief in the game plan.
