What a strange article. I know The Roar isnt exactly a heavy hitter but i'm surprised how far this deviates from a normal article into fan fiction.

Eagles fans have never experienced an extended period of time out of finals and they dont understand the pain that some other supporter bases have had.

Anyone know what they are talking about with this section?

Who can forget our infamous 2018 dodgy deal with Sydney, playing bag-man long enough for them to match a bid on their Academy-linked star, Nick Blakey, without consuming their early pick and getting the Eagles a nice little commission in the process? Ahhhhh, good times.

Crazy to think they have so many fans and still pull better crowds than we do sometimes.

Is he assuming trac comes back to the dees then cos otherwise there was no way the petracca deal gets done I understand being all in and wanting the best for your club but it doesn't mean the other clubs vanish into thin air there's a much bigger picture at play in the trade and draft season and even with a .1% chance of this happening I can't imagine the AFL wouldn't find out eventually

they're the richest team in the competition in a two-team town where there is little other comparative distractions

And so what if one of these clubs that did a trade for better picks on the premis of not bidding on the club they were dealing withs player then double crosses them and bids on them anyways? I know it's unlikely and that club would never receive that same sort of trust in a deal again, but it it could set your club up better and seriously push back a close rivals recruitment, then surely you'd actually have to consider it right?

Similarly, I think the AFL should be holding players that nominate for the draft and then nominate a club or their terms to account. I'd also love to see a rival club draft someone like a Luke Ball or Jack Martin, then just offer them a contract of whatever they could afford and say, don't like it, don't play for us and get nothing for a season.

I will admit the trade to move up one spot late in the first round was a big head scratcher that i would be fuming about if we had done it.

Give them another decade or so of irrelevance and hopefully that changes. Maybe even more so if Freo can actually be half decent in that time.

Found it. Sydney traded out their 2nd round pick to West Coast so it wouldnt be consumed in a bid for Blakey. Then they traded back into the second round after the bid.

Yep, still quite impressive. It does go to show if they’re the richest how poorly they’re running the club if they can’t manage to find good enough talent to ride to the top again.

They chose Mini as a coach which isn’t bad but with all their coin maybe they should have aimed higher. Then again the salary cap probably hinders them a bit too.

I hope they languish for a lot longer yet. Thoroughly dislikable supporter base.

Personally I was glad they took Mini I thought our mids went south when he took over.

I won a MFC contest in 2015 for two premium premiership tickets Hawks V Weagles, wife and I had a great day out and we sat in amongst the Weagles fans L4 MCC. It was hard to show empathy when hawks were ruining their day, it was a very quiet 2nd half, once the fire went out of the game they seemed likeable enough. 👍😁

The optimal result long term for Australian football is that West Coast win a majority of their home games to keep the fans entertained, but then lose everywhere else to ensure the Eagles never again soil finals with their presence.

Also, if west Coast consistently have an early pick and use it on local talent, it really helps other clubs with the 'go home' problem

Imagine all those booing fests. I think it's tonned down since their expectation is they will loose any week anyways.

The Eagles last won a flag in 2018, so they’re a couple of decades off earning any pity or support.

Try 56 years in the wilderness… that’ll sort the wheat from the chaff in their supporter base. 😛

They we pretty obnoxious throughout most of the 90s when they were a force as well.

Yep, especially when all the reporting was that they did it because they thought Gold Coast wouldn’t match, not purely to get Josh Lindsay.

They’ve been lucky the AFL basically negotiated with them and Brisbane to get pick 2 for Oscar Allen and a priority pick to WCE to send for a free agent in Starcevich.

Those handouts as well as some nice moves like drafting Jobe Shanahan and a couple of good midseason draft picks have helped them get the list back in order. The rest of their drafting and trading still looks pretty meh.

Pretty simple choice for the Suns:

They can deal with us and have Tracc. Or they can deal with West Coast and save a few draft points (ie. future 2nd or 3rd round picks).

Takes a fair bit of entitlement for Eagles fans to think the latter was the right choice.

West Coast fans are either insufferable gloaters when they're winning or insufferable sooks when they're not.

On balance, I prefer the latter.

While a bit off topic with bids. West coast bid and Suns matched, pretty straight forward. Can the eagles then up the bid with more points to take the player. Makes sense in an "auction" bid process, but it does not seem to happen? is it against the rules once the club matches. If not not, why not.
