AFL Draft 2025: Phantom Drafts

I’ve said it before but I just feel that talent drops off significantly just as our picks begin

Very much hope to be proven wrong

Reckon Dovaston, Lindsay, Grlj, Pickett, O Taylor is an exciting group all projected to go after our picks. We just really love Nairn, and rate Farrow higher than those guys. At least according to Cal.

Also, do we seem to always rate WA prospects higher than most other teams?

These Essendon pick 9 shennanigans are a real pain in the behind. I hope if Essendon pass on Sharp to try and outfox us, and Collingwood are keen on Sharp (as Cal has suggested they are) then we deal with them and their F1 (condolences to Sharp being an Essendon fan) to stick it right up em.

Surprised Ludowyke not on Twomey's list.

Would be amazing if we could snag him with our 3rd pick

Going off Cals phantom we pick 38 will come into 33.

Grlj to Hawks at #14 would be very annoying

So could be Schubert to Freo at pick 26. Its an odd fit but if he was still there at that pick, the potential would be too enticing. If he works out they continue their spoiled run of quality tall forwards.

Phillipou didn't make it either. Could we snatch him with pick #37

Haven’t even been remotely linked to him so it’s barely even a potential outcome, but Matthew LeRay from South Australia I would love to pick up with 37

Interesting that Cal also links us to Harley Barker and Harry Kyle - haven’t seen those links anywhere else

Been a rough few weeks of people on the socials pretending Schubert was a top 10 calibre guy and that we'd be silly not to take him

Never saw the slightest appeal. All this talk about his versatility and he moves like a houseboat. Hope he proves me wrong etc but glad he won’t be playing for us

I rate Farrow but can't help but feel a bit 'iffy' about potentially drafting another WA prospect.

On the plus side, it'll be fun watching commentators get themselves tripped up between Farrow and Sparrow.

The 3 year contract length that applies to all first round picks since last year I think helps us here.

Farrow looks like he could have an impact first season to which I think also helps.

Hard for a young fella not to sign a contract extension that would at least double his salary.

So no Philippou, Ludowyke, Greeves, NHH, Rodriguez, Onley, and quite a few decently rated academy tied players in the 30.

Don't have anything against Farrow but liked the sound of Taylor, Robey and Cumming more. I reckon there's a chance one gets through - to me it seems odd that Richmond would go Robey, Cumming when they got Lalor and Smilie last year. Am hoping that Grlj would suit their mix better. It probably won't matter for us given essendon will pick whoever Richmond don't out of the players we have an interest in.

Fill be fascinating to see how it plays out. Love the sound of Taylor but surely he's gone before us.

If X Taylor get through, do we still take a (mostly) defender in Farrow

I would assume we would pair Taylor with Nairn.

Come on Dons - you know you want the Farrow Sharp combo

Surely we go Pickett if he is projected to go around 15 and we have 12.

We desperately need small fwds and X factor. Small fwds are crucial these days from what I hear and we have lost ANB and Spargo.

New fast game plan? Give me Latrelle!

I hope we attempted to trade our first pick and gold coast's F1, for one of Richmond's picks and a future second/third.

That way we could guarantee getting one of Robey, X Taylor and Cumming.

Then use our second pick for Nairn since we are so keen on him.

Gold Coast's F1 will be a late teens pick next year anyway.

surely if the tigers live grjl and he is going to be on the board at our pick then we can do a deal to get ahead of essendon and get a run at robey or taylor and even have a sniff of cdt

you just know he becomes a star and allows weddle to go inside or just dominates for them once impey/amon finish up

wed, the wiz and siz: hawks need for speed

headline when he has 20 and kicks one on the run on debut

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
