You donโ€™t court a player like Trac and make him commitments to the point where he nominates you as his preferred club, if youโ€™re not serious about getting a deal done.

GC would have gone into the meeting with Trac knowing our bottom line, and pick 6 and 17 is not it.

Let's not forget Trac shopped himself to Collingwood last year outside any involvement of his manager; Trac asking for a trade and saying he wants GC still does not guarantee GC went into a meeting willing to part with anything other than picks. Trac needs/wants GC more than GC needs Trac. He has so little hand in all of this, even though he was the one who pulled the original trigger.

The latest creak in my knee is telling me MFC plays hardball and the whole deal falls through.

Myself as I work in the Industry. Not saying they canโ€™t develop into superstars but what we have noticed tracking this years draft over the last few years is that there are limited standouts compared to other years. I do this for a job and have been for a long time. Trust me I hope Iโ€™m wrong just that this year doesnโ€™t look to go as deep.

May I just ask you, when you say there are limited standouts compared to other years, do you mean when you look at this years players, itโ€™s 7-8 (random number) players that stand out and everyone is just kinda in the mix in this draft alone?

As opposed to other years where it could be 20 players that are clear standouts in that year?

Or are you comparing the players in this years draft with how other players looked in other draft years?

(P.S. Iโ€™m not doubting you, Iโ€™m just interested in what the metrics are to determine that this years draft isnโ€™t as strong as other years)

Cheers

Trac never asked for a trade to Collingwood, or anyone else for that matter, because nothing got further than a chat.

Big difference when you go visit the club, talk to the coach/list manager, and then declare your desire to move there. It means that you've got an offer on the table, and a commitment from the club that they'll do what they can to facilitate a trade.

Of course it doesn't mean a trade happens, but it's far more likely to happen when things progress this far and public commitments are made

Agreed. But it sounds like GC weren't chasing Trac and that they would have been approached by his management. They already have an elite midfield. Obviously essentially bringing in Trac for Flanders would be an upgrade and give them a boost but if he doesn't end up there I don't think they will be hugely fussed and can go after another star wanting out of Melb.

If GC can get Trac for two first rounders (the going rate) they do it. If not they simply say 'oh well, we'll keep our cap space, hold onto our high picks and you keep your unhappy star on huge $$$'.

Get ready for a bunch of draft picks both present and future folks!

The thing I keep thinking about is how Lamb has made a point of saying that it was essentially a clever move by the club to trade out of this year's draft in order to get Lindsay.

What does that say if we accept picks from the Suns now in exchange for Trac. Now we're back in the draft again. A draft that we decided wasn't worth it.

I'm so curious how this plays out. The club has to play hard ball here.

Yeah there is just a feeling with what we have seen the last couple of years there are a lot less standouts with amazing traits/skills compared to other years. Look we could be wrong as some kids are still developing plus what roles they get in the club they land at etc. itโ€™s just how we feel the draft is. Look I hope Iโ€™m wrong but going of years of drafting it looks to be a shallow draft.

Essendonโ€™s list boss Matt Rosa said this morning that they have made it very clear to The Eagles and Richmond that theyโ€™d be keen to bundle their picks 4 and 5 into pick 1 or 2. They are keen on Duursma for talent and family reasons.

In my opinion this makes the Gold Coast Tracc trade more difficult as we canโ€™t bundle them up to get higher as Essendon will always have a better hand.

There was also a bit of inference that the talent drops off quickly after about 5 players (including Academy kids).

I think we have to get a player back for Tracc or it looks like a net loss.

Where do you rank the 2003 draft. Most of the high picks seemed to be busts. How was it viewed prior to the draft?

It just shows how hit and miss drafts are, even for the footy industry. 2014 yielded Tracc, Angus, De Goey, Moore, Heeney, Jake Lever, Touk Miller, Dale, Caleb Daniel, Maynard, Andrewโ€™s, Ed Langdon and a host of others still playing 12 years later. In hindsight probably one of the stronger drafts ever.

2003 was marked as an average draft overall. I wasnt in the industry then but Iโ€™m pretty sure that was Pendlebury year and with out checking it up I think you will most of the top 10 didnโ€™t become superstars except for Pendlebury etc. [censored] now I need to go back and have a look to see how my memory was.

Any conspiracy by the AFL forcing the Trac deal so the their club the Suns become stronger?

If the draft is shallow why would we accept draft pics, unless they use them to target another gun eg Butters

given Josh Jenkins has zero links to either club or the situation i would say his opinion means about as much to me as a discarded bowel movement.

As opposed to a retained one.

Jenkins sucksssss. Has no clue, I doubt he even watches half the games. Certainly hasn't watched Melbourne the way you hear him talk about us

We could trade 7 & 8 to the Eagles for next years future 1st, and a

Pick around 16 this year.

Tim Lamb said in an interview last week that we deliberately looked to get out of this draft. Would be weird if all we did this offseason was get back into it.

We were keen to trade out before we knew we'd be 5th last

Not sure why people are so irked by this. Its a typical media move to get clicks and comments (its working too).

Given the information he's probably right and worth a stab for some media attention/clout. At the very least a throw away post.

Anyway given the circumstances I agree with him.

Question: When was the last time a player requested a trade to a club (not for family reasons) but just of want to play for another club and the trade fell through?

Get ready for those draft picks folks.

Ah ok yup, makes sense. Thanks for explaining. You can only look at whatโ€™s in front of you so if everyone is seeing less skills compared to other years then at this stage itโ€™s a weaker draft.

What pick would we trade Lindsay for this draft is another way to look at it. Plus if we didn't swap, we'd have maybe 3 picks inside the top 10 of a week draft if we can't get a player back in our trades.

Lamb has said we aren't looking to trade into the first round this year, though we may have no choice unless we ask for future picks.

Thatโ€™s all it is. You can only go with what is put in front of you. Plus also AFL clubland etc is so much different to under 18s etc. no one means any disrespect to the kids coming through in this draft class itโ€™s just tipped to not be as strong. At present I think personally there will be 2-3 really good players then potentially slowly taper off. I hope Iโ€™m wrong as they are all better than what I was as a footballer and I wish them well.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
