CHRISTIAN PETRACCA TO GOLD COAST

That leads us into the Suns’ most important move — operation land Petracca.

It mightn’t be that easy though, for Melbourne would want to be well compensated for the contracted four-time All-Australian.

But his nomination to head north instead of Adelaide is a win for Melbourne given Gold Coast’s surplus of assets including three-first round picks — potentially four if it gets St Kilda’s Pick 7 for Sam Flanders.

The first port of call for the Demons would be Bailey Humphrey, as unlikely as that would be.

For the Suns have said Humphrey won’t be traded, despite the 21-year old meeting with Melbourne officials and clearly being open to a return to Victoria with multiple clubs circling.

Let’s just pretend Humphrey isn’t available, for then it becomes a question of which party has to give up more (for the record, we’d say Melbourne).

That would make Gold Coast’s Pick 7 it gets for Flanders the centrepiece of a deal with the Demons.

Melbourne, who doesn’t currently have a first-round pick, would want another first rounder thrown in on top of that.

The Suns would be prepared to do that — and say, give up pick 14 or 17 — if it meant their remaining capital was enough to secure their academy players.

Or if beyond the two highest rated of those academy prospects, Zeke Uwland and Dylan Patterson, if Gold Coast was prepared to forgo one or more of the others.

At the end of the day, it’s still a much cheaper cost than Charlie Curnow and the Suns should get Ugle-Hagan for very little, if anything.

What gets deal done

-Melbourne receives Pick 7, Pick 17

-Gold Coast receives Christian Petracca, Pick 26

A laughable outcome. No way this happens. Bookmark it.

It's Melbourne or he stays at the Suns. We're the only ones with capital (Trac) to get a deal done.

And Humphrey doesn't meet Melbourne without the Suns' blessing or without some interest in joining the MFC.

Entirely logical.

He comes out and says he wants to go home for family reasons and play for the Dees and we are in play.

Could go towards Humphrey if he nominates us or even Butters or Ben King next year.

I would prefer the picks to be honest.

Hardline that we want 6 and 7, even if we send something else back.

This gives us 6 top 12 picks in the last 3 years which is a great start to a rebuild and then bank 3 mil in cap space.

Give King 12 months to clean the joint up and then a war chest to hit the free agency market. we could bring in a combo of Bailey and Butters into an already exciting group.

I love Humphrey, but i just can't fathom why a GCS all in on a flag would let him go.

Ultimately, we have to be prepared to hold trac to his deal. And i'm not sure if the club are prepared to do this.

if we show any indication that we will do the deal regardless we'll get screwed

I thought you were saying we’re not going to get Humphrey but would still want Trac’s salary off the books? We’d also be a long shot to bring in Butters or King

Agree though - we’d clearly be offering a Humphrey a significant portion, if not most, of Trac’s current salary to get him to nominate us

If we are giving away Trac for nothing then we will be near the bottom and Butters and King ain't going to a bottom club.

Yeah I still stand that I think its a long shot with Humphrey. I think Gold Coast will make it hard but also what happens if he doesnt nominate us?

Butters may be a long shot but Ben King has spent time with Steven King which i dont really consider a long shot compared to Butters.

I agree mate. I think Humphrey is a long shot so i prefer the two early picks. Grab two high end talents and let King rebuild on the run.

Finals is out of the equation next year so if it means we need to take a step backwards to then take two steps forward for hopefully sustained success then I am happy with that.

because they are getting Petracca and Academy kids, they can afford to lose Humphrey. Who are you? Tim Lamb? You are soft honesty gets you nowhere. We won't be getting King or Butters if we are on the bottom. I don't care if they see Humphrey in their premiership team. We want him if you want Petracca you give him to us. That's what I'd be saying. Pick 7, Humphrey and Ainsworth for Trac deal done CLOSE THREAD.

You've lost the plot. You want us to be on the bottom forever. Sounds like 2012.

The questions for GC is do they love Humphrey more than they want Petracca. We need to stand firm in my view which also reflect our messaging to this point. Pick 6 and 7 (which likely become 10 and 11) in an allegedly middling draft is not worth it even with the $$ saved for future war chest. Below is the last 10 years of pick 10 and 11 and whilst in JT we trust shows how hit and miss it can be.

I think you're clearly losing the plot considering you have misinterpreted what I said. Not once did I EVER say I want us to be at the bottom forever, thats you, and you only thats saying that.

Breath before you hit the enter button next time.

Getting 2 ordinary picks for Petracca will put us on the bottom. I don't know why people want picks knowing this is an ordinary draft. Petracca is our second best player. Pay up or he stays should be the motto. Every suggestion you have made puts us on the bottom. Your any deal will do for Petracca is just plain stupid. Graham poor mans Peatling you have no idea.

There are reports Trac is asking an extra year on the contract & more $$, also someone posted here that he also asked Melb to reconstruct he’s contract ti somehow assist with his other outside commercial social media business??

We are on the bottom with them. Keeping them will not change the culture or the perceived attitude within the playing group. Changing personnel will. Agree it is a risk, but I believe it is a risk worth taking. Read Jake Niall's article in today's Age.

Not when it comes to Trac he can come around. When it comes to culture killers like May and Oliver then sure get rid of them.

Yep, that is a pathetic deal for us.

Someone start an eediots guide to pick swapping, points value and anything else associated with trades pls. Very slow learner over here.

Its a bit 'smoke and mirrors'.

  • There has been a small reduction in the points needed to match a bid.

  • The discount on those points is now 10% not 20% (why they give any discount is beyond me!)

  • The points attached to draft picks ends at end of round 3 (nominally 54) whereas it was end of round 5 (nominally) 72.

Imv it isn't that much fairer as clubs will still trade out their top picks and will stock pile picks to match bids ie picks in 20'w and 30's rather than previously 40+. This will be much easier with future trading of 2026 and 2027 picks. Again, imv the AFL should revert to the system where a club could not hold more picks than list spots. Without that limitation it is just another free kick for such clubs.

For more detailed info:

the-example-that-shows-how-matching-bids-will-be-harder-in-2025

Where it might help other clubs is that picks in the 30's and low 40's will come in a long

Were you the same person that said pick 7 for Curnow? Pick 7 doesn't even come close it's insulting really.

Sorry folks, having some tech issues over here.

Just need to see if my John Delosa thumbs-down button is working….

It’s become untenable for Trac staying at the MFC. If he were, he’d only put in half hearted efforts.

My preference of course would be for a good quality player to be involved in the trade, but if picks is the only offer we get so be it. I would only accept picks 6 & 7 for Trac and maybe a second rounder though (not 6 & 20-something).

Sure the draft is not as deep or good this year, but good players always come out of poor drafts, JT will just need to nail them.

Trac, Clarry and May all going realistically means that we must rebuild. 2 top picks will help fast track that rebuild if we get them right.

What’s to say that Trac will ever get back to the player he once was? Will we nail these picks? Unknowns atm, just got to back our club in im afraid, as we are all simply passengers.

Reports now coming out that Suns may be open to trading pick 6 with clubs looking to get up the draft order

If Suns are only willing to offer pick 7 (and change), where does that leave us with Trac?

No Melbourne supporter is going to accept that being the heart of the deal for him

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
