Gold!

You have to assume the new coach and others must have a ripping plan in all of this. Patience...it will reveal itself when the time is right...

Settle, petal!

A midfield of Kozzie, Viney and Rivers, with Langford in as well. (Cully, Sharp, Woey and Laurie fighting for spots too)…

With elite kicking the order of the day, with lots of cash and some high picks, we are ready to start a new era under King.

Thats the thing,no 24 to 28 year olds,no cash and no one that is good is coming.this is a waiting game till the kids develop

I don’t get everyone’s issue, the team has declined for the last few years and everyone knew there had to be change. Can you imagine the uproar if we made no changes and ended up down in the bottom 4 again?

I applaud the club for making hard decisions

Don’t forget about Windsor, he’ll be a lock in the midfield next year

This has been long overdue and all the happy clappers here couldn't see it. Goodwin couldn't see it or wouldn't do it.

King is a smart operator who sees what every other professional club could see from afar.

The panic here is total vindication that the right moves are being made.

My faith is being restored

Harmes played a blinder in the 2021 Granny

His intercept and pass to Fritta in the third quarter to kickstart our comeback was a blinder.

Apart from that, he had 13 other touches and didn't make anybody's best players list on the day.

I’m ok with the direction but they need to be real and stop with the talk about playing finals…we’re a long way off.

Would have been nice to hold onto Bedford, played some fantastic football since we dumped him for pick 44. Especially since Jordan left.

He shut down Caleb Daniel after half time who was on track to collect 100 disposals and was v damaging coming out of defence

I curse my old man for pushing this club on me, up the dog park and a mate goes just change, it’s a ludicrous statement, you’re born to support a club and stick with them. This club has been the hardest to stick with, this is Neeld all over again, first time coach comes in and thinks that being uncompromising is the way to do it, he’s gonna fail and he’s gonna fail big time.

I’ll never forget King kicking Jeff White in the head, it was right in front of me, well he’s doing it again, kicking the whole club in the head, Steven King is going to fail and fail badly, he’s a bad choice, we should have given it to Buckley, but NO, the club wants an answer right now, can’t wait another frickin’ day, I’m too old to go through this [censored] again🙄

Have to say your instincts could be right

Sam Mitchell, who (horrifyingly) I’d rate as the best coach in the AFL right now, don’t think he’d ever say “my midfield…”

While I appreciate the tough standards. You’ll rarely get someone to do what you want by demanding it.

There’s a balance and King is acting like an assistant trying to elevate his authority.

I think he’s going to be wonderful, but I agree that wasn’t a good showing.

I thought about putting this in a few of the threads. Not sure if this is the right one but .... it might be.

Just a thought on what might be the broader picture in the situation with Petracca and Oliver.

Let me see…..

May under contract and told he is free to look for another club…

Petracca under contract, had his situation discussed with him and told about the role he could expect to play in the team. Was also told that he could explore his options if he wanted to.

Oliver under contract, same as Petracca… told what was expected of him and his role within the team as from next season. Told he could look around if he wanted to.

These three are, of course, senior, very experienced players that have some decisions to make with regard to their immediate futures. Serious business.

However, I applaud the club for the positions they have taken with these players. That is not to say that I consider any of the players at fault. The process that the club has in place strikes me as a mature response and a very professional one at that.

Over the last 10/15 years more power and control has evolved to the players with respect to where they play and how they honour their contract conditions. In a lot of respects, they have demanded that clubs become more professional.

With the replacement of the coach, CEO and, in the near future, the President, MFC is looking to throw some of the professional responsibility back on the players and their agents.

“You want to move with 5 years on your contract, well, feel free to have a look around to see if you can satisfy our requirements. However, be assured that if we are not satisfied and a trade cannot be made, we will hold you to your contract and expect a proper, professional playing approach from you. The club will not be actively seeking a trade for you this off-season”

I see nothing wrong with this approach at all. While it is squarely putting a lot of the responsibility back in the Player and their agents it is also taking back a good degree of control for the club. The player and his team might arrive at a preferred club but, rather than make the statement and throw it over to the club to work out with an expectation that they will negotiate and sort it out, in this situation it is the responsibility of the player and his nominated club to present a deal to MFC. This leaves a lot of power in the hands of MFC. In fact, the MFC do not have to state what deal will satisfy them. All they need to do is to say…. “Sorry, that is not good enough. If that is your last word, he plays out his contract.”

I can see the whole of the playing group working through the implications of this attitude by the club.

May situation is a little different. He is that bit older than Petracca and Oliver is losing a pace or two, not as flexible as he once was and is being looked at as a possible disrupter on the list. He has been great for us, but this is a new era for the club.

I hope that the coaches and the club administration continue with this direction. it will make a refreshing change with the coaches, in particular supervising, directing and controlling the playing list within the constrains of a clear vision and approach. All, the players, coaches and club need to know where they stand.

Have a listen to King's measured answer on this in the SEN interview.

If tagging an opponent for half a game is a blinder, how would you describe Petracca's game? Or Fritsch's?

We clearly have a different understanding of the term "blinder".

Harmes did a job and played his role. He was serviceable, but he was no star on the day.

Do you mean exactly 24- 28? Trac and May are well past that and Oliver is 29 next July. Surely if next year he has another horribly ordinary year as a midfielder polling no Brownlow votes but earning well over a million this isn't gonna help our team much. Quite simply we're not suddenly offloading two or three players in their prime that match it with anyone.

It's funny. This feels like Melbourne is 3 goals down early in a match. No supporter wants that start. But often teams win from there. People were screaming for Goody to be sacked. Even most of the rest of us soon after King's selection got on board and agreed to hold back on judgement and the trademark Melbourne pessimism. Now suddenly, days after he's started, so many have their knickers in a twist. What were you expecting ? Throw that infamous soccer ball in the bin, run a few extra laps and practise more kicking at goal? Sure, delisting Gawn and Kosi this week would have been preposterous. But surely we expected King would do things - be a mover and a shaker. Honestly we really have no feedback yet - we really have none until early in round 1. And remember even if we're three goals down early we can still win that game. Cripes, even with a round one loss we could do well next year or prove the year after that King ( and maybe the current expected list changes) has been great.

The consensus was an outcry for change, when it occurs, the outcry continues.

Limping into the final 8 next year would not have provided real success.

Why the comparison with Geelong 2022 specifically? Half that side is now retired or may as well be.

King is freshly out the Geelong system, by implication this should be a source of comfort for you.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
