Realistic 23 for 2026

King will surely use preseason to rejuvenate some players who’ve stagnated slightly. I’d like to see Bowey and Salem as rotating in the spargo HFF deliverer role, and BP outlet kick.

Watching hawthorn in the finals it was obvious that players despite not playing spots all year don’t cry when put somewhere unfamiliar understand it’s not rocket surgery. Take the role given and try your best to impact.

Hoping king has game day tactics like this. If petty isn’t kicking goals, throw disco forward and petty back. Don’t worry about him dropping his head, he won’t have time (and won’t have to worry about a chirpy May)

So as for a 22, irrelevant. Pick from the squad of players ready to go based on fitness form and troubling the opposition.

FB Lever. Petty. Salem

HB. Lindsay. Disco. Bowey

C. Culley. Flanders. Langdon

HF. Langford. JVR. Fristch

FF. Chandler. Kentfield Viney

Foll Gawn. Pickett. Windsor

Bench. Rivers. Oliver. Mcvee. Mihocek

Sub Howes

Emergency. Jefferson. Tholstrup. Derkson

Assuming trac and may leave aswell as Flanders is the only of our recruits to make best 23

Love the Realism when we have zero new signings! Maybe change the heading to "Speculative, to be considered when and if available"

Possibly because age has nothing to do with either trade.

I did not say age was the reason for may to be asked to look elsewhere. Please read my post carefully.

Based on those ins.

In - Mihocek, Flanders, Derksen, Heath, Rosas jr

Out - Trac, May, Spargo

I’d really like to see us pick up Mitch Hardie from Casey. blokes a natural forward & if Kentfield and Culley have big pre seasons I could see them both starting.

B - McVee, Petty, Lever

HB - Bowey, Turner, Salem

C - Langford, Oliver, Culley

HF - Pickett, Mihocek, Fritsch

F - Melksham, JVR , Kentfield

Ruck - Gawn, Flanders, Rivers

Int - Hardie, Langdon, Chandler, Viney, Howes

(There will be no Sub next year)

All of which is just filling in the finals time in our absence.

How about reviewing after we have a coach (3 hours from now) and a list. 🤔

I like doing a best 22 myself, but until the trade and draft period are over, it's liable to completely change.

Should we start again haha

It's still too early. I think we'll have 1 or 2 players some would have in their 23's post draft.

Also curious as to how King and Co implement and utilise #23

That'll be interesting to see league-wide really.

I assume it brings in the second ruck and then has a flow on effect to an additional runner.

You have some talent on that bench..

I’d been quite forgetful of AMW, I reckon he starts over CJ.

Melk over Sparrow maybe? Though I appreciate the run that’s required.. don’t know if he has the legs anymore.

Would consider Rivers over Langford in the middle for now, Langford back to the wing and Langdon on the bench.. can all rotate amongst themselves.

Lots to be excited about! Some really nice young talent there and with 4 first round picks in the next two years I’m pumped for the future. Also excited for next year without the burden of expectation.. can just enjoy watching the team grow up under a new exciting system.

New Dawn. New Day.

McAdam in fwd pocket.

Why not

Looks a pretty dynamic team. Young and quick.

Would avoid Steele and Viney taking too many CBAs together though

Add in 2 high draft picks and it's looking good!

FB: Petty May Bowey

FF: Melksham Mihocek Chandler

FOLL: Gawn Steele Langford

EMG: TMac, Heath, Salem

No disrespect to Salem, but if we don't have someone taking over his small running defender role this season that's a real concern. He's cooked. My take on the 5th bench position is that it should be a running player, not a 2nd ruck. I'd put Pickett in at centre ball ups instead of Viney, Steele or Langford then straight down to the forward line for him.

I like Turner up forward, booming kick and pretty accurate but if that doesn't work out then May gets dropped, send Turner to the backline and promote Heath, Tmac (I still rate him a much better forward than he is a defender), Kentfield or Jefferson.

Have heard a couple of people saying this about Salem and I wonder whether they're watching different games to me.

Had a really solid season and deservedly finished 5th in the BnF.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?
