87 preliminary is right up there with the MOST disappionting occurances in my life!😵😵‍💫

The first and only timed I cried at the football. I was in my 30’s.

Sitting in the car for an 1 hour waiting to exit the car park didn’t help much either.

i dunno Buckley doesn’t strike me as someone who would waste his or a clubs time. I think he’d have declined an interview if he had any significant doubts about his desire to be in the process.

1 minute ago, whatwhat say what said:

he has no experience away from the filth, he hasn't coached at any level for over 4 years, and he doesn't know whether he wants it?

basically rules him out for mine

He is in a very awkward position in how publicly he is connected to the position. If he gets looked over for another assistant it's not great for his reputation, so better for him to be seen to not actually want the job in those circumstances.

I think if he still wasn't really sure then he would have removed himself from the process himself.

A nothing opinion statement from Edmund. I wouldn't buy too much into it, he's participating in the process which is enough of a sign to tell me he wants the job.

I think the timing was all wrong. The key forwards we went after at the time all had unique circumstances at the time that kept them at bay. I think you'll also find that most players want to stay one club players and it takes a lot of disenchantment to leave.

I think the the likes of Larkey and Waterman, just wanted to remain loyal and connected with friends. OR it could have been the $$$ who knows. There is also the distinct possibility that our reputation as a destination club is not great and player managers may in fact discourage their players to steer clear. Unlikely but something of this ilk maybe at play.

With McKay and Georgiadies, i think that their respective teams were thereabouts when we tried to poach them. Had their teams been in a similar position to what they are in now when we were pursuing them, i think we could have convinced them to join.

I dont think it would have made much difference to our chances. Our F50 connection has always been the problem. When our trio bulls in Oliver, Trac and Viney consistenly ranked in the top 20 worse kicks in the AFL even having Jezza wouldnt have mattered. We need to remove the butchers (which we are doing now).

You are correct on Georgiadis.

On McKay, not so sure. Carlton may have been considered an almost finals team but they didn't actually make it until 2023.

There was no warranty at the end of 2022 that Carlton would actually be contending for finals.

Again the media machine is at play here. Buckley is doing his due diligence and the reality is he may not like what he finds out. There is a lot on public record but there is some stuff that doesnt get out (although not too much you would think).

Edmund has a right to an opinion and tbh, Buckley hasnt been totally committed in the public either (for the above reason).

Looks like Caro's campaign for her mate down in Tassie is working.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't want the job

Prepare to be shocked. He doesn’t want the job. Anyone banking on Buckley becoming the next coach should temper their expectations and brace for a face-saving announcement from both him and the club. From what I’ve heard, Hayden Skipworth has now emerged as the frontrunner.

I call bull.

There’s no chance a person is going to put themselves through the judgement, scorn and opinions of everyone for a job they’re not interested in.

If bucks wasn’t interested, he would have bowed out. He would have joined the likes of Longmire, Simpson etc. That may still happen.

I’m skeptical to think he’s put himself through this entire process, to then be asked questions on 360 and radio about the process, how keen he is, if he wasn’t interested.

I think this is clickbait until proven otherwise.

I would be shocked. I have no intel except what's already known and that suggests he wants it, badly.
Only way he exits now is if the club is underwhelmed by his presentation... This, I could believe

What is the official date of picking a senior coach?

We’ll know we have a new coach when white smoke billows out of the chimney 🙃

How are you so sure?

I don't know if what Edmunds says is true but it wouldn't be the biggest shock. Sometimes at this point it is as much about an experienced coach interviewing the club as it is the other way round.

There is probably a better time to pull out of the race though and this wouldn't be the best time.

Tassie pulling out all stops to get Buckley involved next year.

AFL appears to bring fwd VFL and VFLW start up to 2026

They are also dangling a carrot:

"But in the background, the Devils are also dangling the keys.

"The opportunity to be Tasmania's first senior coach will be on Buckley's mind, with the possibility of a flexible start-up plan next year allowing for his media commitments before taking on the role permanently down the track ahead of the Devils' proposed 2028 start in the AFL".

"...its start-up list rules should be officially announced later this month and it is getting more commercial support off-field and adding staff internally'.

tbh, I find the AFL's campaign effectively working against MFC's interest very distasteful. They have sunk to a new low imv.

At Casey, Caufield or the MCG?

I'm not convinced Buckley is the best person for the job, not sure why he's so favoured....the way he waffles on bores me, I hope he's a more inspiring an orator when he gets in front of the playing group if we do end up going with him

Weird, I reckon he's the most insightful voice in the media.

That doesn't explain why a top 4 contender team, with a flag in 2021, wasn't attractive enough.

Take for example McKay. We could have told him, you'll be number 1 in our team (unlike sharing the spotlight with Curnow) and our team is competing for more flags, and you are the missing piece.

Same thing that probably brought Lynch to Richmond in 2018.

Players are generally pretty loyal. Especially if they’re playing for a big club/feel they’re close to challenging/getting paid good money.

When it’s all three, like McKay, it becomes almost impossible to prise them out.

This is the case for all clubs, big and small. Collingwood threw the kitchen sink at J Brown and N Riewoldt and couldn’t get either. Many, many more players choose to stay than leave every year. It often has to be an absolute perfect storm to be able to get a big name player to your club.

We did all we could!

But McKay was also sharing the spotlight with Curnow. Unlike perhaps Riewoldt or Brown.

A moot point now, it'll be interesting to see where our list goes in the next couple of years.

we still lost those 9 games ! Start of season only the deluded thought we were a finals chance and we were not

I think you are wrong. I think we were a definite chance. I'm still not convinced that all was fair play, and in time I think it will come out that there was a pattern of discrimination that was festering throughout the AFL against us. In my OP many intelligent folks on here cannot be wrong and upon the great man's retirement they will be vindicated.

What started off as ....no not conspiracy again....became a statistical fact and stuf the AFL.

Glad I'm not the only one who had this thought. Devils haven't even got a decision on their stadium yet, Seems a clear intent to land Buckley now, wait and see I suppose.

They’re bafoons.

No clue on who would take them serious.

If Buckley said yes to them, then my belief on him being super knowledgeable and a footy expert is clearly wrong.

Imagine trying to lure a coach when you have no stadium, no players, no assistants, no sponsors, and no support.

AFL tampering with its own competition. Banana republic and comical to be honest.

On the Tassie front, all I’ll say is that Bucks clearly isn’t interested in winning Premiership if he decides to go that route…

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
