Overall for the year we're 8th for 'with the footy' and 11th for 'without the footy'.

For an overall season, 8th is the best we've been 'with the footy' since 2022. We were 10th in 2023 and 13th in 2024 for comparison.

And yet in 22' and 23' we finished top 4.

So again, I'm not sure what exactly those last 5 matches are telling us from a 'what actually matters' perspective?

Not a lot.

But each to their own, I guess some people need to find the joy somewhere from this season.

It's because we were number 1 without the footy and number 1 in contest. The old "Contest and defence".

Being excellent in those 2 areas can get you into finals/top 4 but you're not going to win the whole thing if you can't move the footy and score.

Goody realised this at the end of 2023 which is why we started to change our style to try and be better at moving the footy and scoring. Unfortunately, our defence fell away as a byproduct of this transition which has ultimately led to the losses and then Goodwin's job.

Whoever takes over as coach needs to continue the progress of moving the ball but also sure up our defence and I think we'll be competing again. Our defence is our biggest problem, but the media (and a lot of supporters), still concentrate on our connection going forward but we've made significant progress in that area this year.

Getting all our defenders on the park would help. Missing Lever pretty well all year, and May for some of it, Rivers to on-ball/mid, McVee with an early season injury that he hasn't really been able to work back from, missing depth/backup (Hore, AMW), Petty forward - though Turner is stepping up, etc. etc. We had pretty much the same backline for a few years there, and it showed, this year has been a bit of a dog's breakfast.

That's an excellent point.

In previous years the plsyers were so well drilled in terms of our defensive systems and structures that any new player could just slot into that sytem no drama.

But that’s decidedly not the case now.

And the other issue is a transition based game plan requires defenders with to who can get backnon turnover- which is why trialled Windsor back thete and whether went with Howes over Tmac for a few weeks (which even though I get the logic was still a completely stupid decision, one I know for a fact was not all on Goody).

And that need for speed exposed Lever and in particular May. It also exposes Mat defensively in one in one contests because he's at his best when the ball comes in slow so he can get in a strength battle with the oppos forward gorilla.

As we saw on the weekend when the ball comes in fast he not only struggles to go with a leading forward his loses his one wood - his ability to out muscle his opponent.

Having watched every minute of every game (bar the Cats game), nah we haven't.

Stats say otherwise and both Chaplin and Goody have said it, but ok.

Stats on the weekend says otherwise.

We had more inside 50s then Hawthorn with 56 compared to Hawthorn's 49 and yet we only kicked 8 goals compared to Hawthorn's 13.

Its still a massive issue.

Chaplin acknowledged this and said that people will be drawn to this same old story but it hasn't been a problem the last 5-6 games. Hawks are currently the second best defensive side in the comp at the minute. It was more about how good Hawthorn are (plus the conditions) and less about us.

Poor Goody...he's gone and we're still going on about him.

Give him a break.

FWIW, he's a legend of the club and no one can take that away from him.

Right? The posters calling for his sacking got what they so badly wanted yet they continue to disparage him. But I suppose it’s to be expected on this site. I’m just wondering when it will taper off, if ever.

Idk who our next coach will be but already I feel sorry for him.

Well you should because regardless of who it is the job has about a 5% success rate. Thats worse odds than bomb disposal.

I would say for the most part those wanting to move on.... have done just that.

To paraphrase Christine Keeler "they would say that wouldn't they"

Not earth shattering news to say that the two key coaches think the team is on track.

Would have preferred to hear them say with a bit more honesty "we were miles off it it and us coaches have no idea how to fix our forward connection and our poor distribution out of the midfield" but I suspect that would have been unlikely.

How about the premiership coach who potentially thinks Melbourne can win the whole thing next year?!

It was actually Mandy Rice-Davies but in this site, who cares about facts or accuracy?

I read your post as arguing that their reads being backed up by Roos gave them more credence. If that's not your position then I apologise.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
