I'm formally recommending that you are suspended from 'Land forthwith @Neil Crompton.

Pretty different circumstances I would have thought. Not like premiership coaches don't get sacked all the time.

My apologies KozzyCan if you thought I was in any way being critical of your post. It was not my intention. I'm just aware of how these decisions can be looked upon differently as circumstances change.

It's all fine.

It's not like sacking a premiership coach has ever haunted us.

(Right decision or not - the manner/timing in which the call was made)

Curses aren't real

Curses aren't real

Curses aren't real...

Stark difference between the two.

Norm Smith was sacked 12 games into the 1965 season, after winning the flag the year before and with the team sitting third on the ladder - 9 wins, 3 losses.

Goodwin was “sacked” ( let’s wait for the ALL the details to come out, maybe it was by mutual arrangement, who knows at this stage) 3 seasons less 3 matches having not won a final since winning a premiership in such a dominant fashion, whole season included.

It’s been all downhill since then.

Very pleased the Board has acted. Unacceptable trajectory and stubbornness by the coaches.

Never a good thing from the human perspective and I thank Simon for the joy of a flag but it's time and we are going backwards. 6 losses to bottom 7 teams and finals in 4 out of 9 years is not where we need to be.

Go Dees

Funny you say that. Did you see Fagans interview in the rooms after the game? He pretty much acknowledged Bruce pulled all the strings

the only problem with a young untested coach, who might bring awesome quick change, is, what happens when the game changes and they need to adapt? do they do a goodwin/buckley or do they evolve well?

I hate the timing and think it's poor form. Should have waited till the end of the year.

While I think it was probably untenable now, I still think many on here are going to be surprised by the depths we are going to fall to in the coming years.

Goodwin will go down as our best coach of the last 60 years and probably at least our next 10.

Ultimately he was burnt by a playing group that claimed to love him but routinely wouldn't fight for him or the club when the moments got biggest.

Well put

Been calling for it but now that's happened I feel a little sorry for the guy.

What he achieved was something heaps of others couldn't.

But he had a stubborn streak like playing Petty fwd for two years was a typical example.

And ironically Petty finally game good on the weekend.

But two years too late and SG was way off continuing to play him there.

But our record this year is just unacceptable and well done to the club for pulling the plug.

His refusal to play Grundy in finals and having a five gamer Laurie as the sub for Gus in such a huge final was ludicrous.

And the lack of any changes while we all watched the Saints make the greatest comeback against us was surreal.

SG has been caught napping on the job for the last time. And while I salute him for his flag it is a sad fact he has lost his touch totally.

We did have a great list. One that one a flag and then two years of a double chances.

Aside from losing both those double chances, last year was a disaster and this year the wheels fell off.

Going forward this was definitely the correct call. Depending upon who replaces him.

Also despite the denials there have been way too many internal rumblings which a good coach just doesn't allow.

Our goal kicking woes alone are enough to justify SG departure but his reluctance to make obvious changes during a game to alter an outcome is as mentioned his biggest Achilles.

Thanks for the memories.

Now onwards and upwards MFC.

Logic: The St Kilda game was always going to be hard to come back from. The timing is a little strange, but if anything it came 7 days too late. Doing it this early gives us the jump on Carlton who are in a nearly identical position to us.

Emotions: Still really sad news. Goody is a Demons legend for life. Absolutely no question. Breaking the drought on 25/9/21 with THE best football ever seen by any team ever. Doesn’t get much more satisfying than that. The 2017-2020 era was fun at times too. Shame it hasn’t worked out and the right decision was made, forever grateful to him.

Apparently more change in the coaching department is coming, so I assume Richardson is next, maybe followed by the fitness coach and Choco

The only one who should survive is Chaplin (returning to the back line), and that's if he wants to. He'd surely have plenty of suitors as a defensive coach, and coaching elsewhere would help fill out his CV for an eventual senior role.

Jones should also be given the opportunity to stay, but certainly not as senior midfield coach.

So why didn't the Board announcement come first?

I'm torn on this, on one hand I feel like Goodwin has been badly let down by the Club Administration this year but am also hopeful that the decision was made based on an informed view of how our Footy Department were tracking internally and ability to turn things around rather than a reaction to our win/loss record the past couple of years and the embarrasing 4th quarter vs Saints.

The Board had better have a good plan to bring in a coaching group that will being sustained success and not simply make change for the sake of it.

From Gleeson's article:

"Goodwin’s departure is unlikely to be the last significant personnel change at the club".

How the hell does the club expect the members to cop that? List management and head of football department needs a review at the very least.

Edit: apologies misread the unlikely.

1000% this.

It's now after 10am, the whole world knows, and we still haven't got a media statement from the club regarding this.

Total shambles how this club can't control even the most important of information.

That's where Richo's replacement is so important

God no. It’s been so refreshing to see our backline actually put some speed on the ball this year. We don’t need the human handbrake back

Can’t thank Goodwin enough for what I thought I would never see, but September 25th 2021 was one of the greatest days in my life.

Thank you Simon from the bottom of my heart, best of luck in whatever path life takes you down from here.

Right call moving forward but what a disgrace that it was leaked, the rat needs to be found and walked out the door immediately.

Could quite easily have been from Goodwin's side, given he was told last night.

Ultimately this is the right call as we need to go in a new direction, interesting timing and handling though. Forever grateful for 2021 to share that moment with my daughters was incredibly special. Thanks Goody, maybe a minutes applause at the 21 minute mark of the first quarter would be a nice touch and then we can look forward to a new chapter.

Go Dees!!!!!!!

I feel devastated. I wasnt one calling for him to go. He was well loved by the players. Can hardly believe it.

A cursory glance at the stats would show you that we concede significantly more than we ever did under Chaplin.

Haven’t read much of this yet, but I’m expecting everyone who was asking for him to be sacked to now be unhappy with the process and timing.

36 minutes ago, Pirlo said:

Every decision could be disastrous. Not making a decision, however, is unforgivable. The club has been festering in more ways than one since the flag, we need and deserve change. President, CEO, senior coach and presumably head of football next. That's a fair old sign of change.

That sounds like riddle. So make tons of extra decisions because...some are bad?!

BTW non-decisions are actually decisions too.

The hope is that the club has a plan, that we have a coach lined up and that sacking Goodwin now gives them the edge on other clubs in the market for a new coach.

The fear is that internal politics and the fragile egos on the board have resulted in pulling the trigger.

Whichever it is - Goodwin has been the best coach MFC has had in my lifetime. I've liked other coaches more in terms of the way they communicate and engage with fans, but Goodie created an environment of consistently high performance in the home and away for consecutive years, including overcoming 57 years of failure making us champions.

Thanks Simon, I know you gave everything you had, and I will be forever grateful to you.

Midfield can’t run or hit a target

Key forwards don’t exist

Key backs ageing

Forward flanker talent completely ordinary

Yet it’s the coach?

The List management has been abysmal and the general leadership at the club just a disaster.

It’s not a bad time for a fresh start but very quickly next season it will be evident the coach wasn’t the problem

There is definitely merit in your observations.

But the coach is ultimately the one who has to take responsibility for your points.

That's the ways it's always been. Right or wrong.

We have been all the shop this year and that's ultimately upon the coach because you can't sack all the players.

It's lonely at the top.

And watching Goody just sit there and watch the saints make that comeback while the only changes he made after saints kicked the first three in as many minutes was change position in his seat.

Finally seeing Melksham and Kozzie stuck on the bench for the last few minutes made me realize that SG was afraid and had no idea what to do. His time was well and truly up.

And while a lot of players should unfortunately join him and most of us know who they are, it just doesn't work that way. Never has and never will.

It's the coach who cops it. And SG bought a fair bit on himself regardless.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
