There is no doubt our senior leadership failed in that last quarter. But it deflects from the bigger issue, which either people dont believe or dont want to believe.

Our lowest ranking players yesteday were ones that didnt play in the premiership. Maybe only Turner plays in that 2021 side?

Anyway broken record time, petty and jvr should not be playing forward. They have no idea how to lead or how to slip their men consistently. Worst kpf output this century. But carry on soldier.

You realise Goodwin sits in on that.. In fact he will preside OVER that. Thats how selection works. Questions will be asked and answered, suggestions made etc.. all roads lead to Rome. Goodwin is Caesar.

Just as Caesar made decisions so does Goidwin. Everyone else is there to serve. Input, ideas and so on.. Generals follow orders. Thats the nature of things.

Anyone who thinks a player plays, doesn't play , is selected, not selected without Simon's tick... you're kidding yourselves.

Bump this!

I just played Red

You think that Simon comes out of his office on a Wednesday night and posts the team sheet up on the noticeboard?

Delusional.

The selection process is one that happens across the FD.

You're telling me the head coach has no say or input on the team he coaches?

Am i correct in saying the only email available for members to vent is the membership one?

If so that never lands in the lap of anyone other than the front line membership staff.

You will just get an Auto response or a pre-fabbed template response from someone there.

The top brass will never even see your emails let alone respond.

When I’m paying for something and I don’t get what I expect I reach out and let them know they won’t get anymore money until they sort it out.

I’ve had enough and I’m letting the club know. They can ignore the email and probably will but I’ve done what I can.

There are clearly doubts about Selwyn and the fitness program but yesterday was a mental failure.

We never put sides to the sword. How often - when we were winning - did we get on top of sides and lament the fact that a four goal win should have been by much more. Other sides know how to make the most of a chance to utterly [censored] the opposition but we don't and that's a mind set issue.

We are not, and I don't remember when we were last ruthless.

At 3/4 time the right mental setting was to absolutely bury the Saints but we didn't have it.

So yeah, by all means get rid of Selwyn, but we also need some Northey-like mongrel in the coaching personnel and the senior players.

Without doubt, we proved ourselves a superior side for three quarters. No need to analyse or review those three!

We failed dismally in the final quarter. Captain obvious, I know!

My point is… that final 30 minutes should be examined with clinical precision… all camera angles, every player, the coach’s role, rotation management, communication between the bench and team, including use of signage to formulate a PLAN to ensure it never happens again. The whole week needs to be devoted to this activity!

Agree. The whole team should then be made to watch the last quarter again as a group. I'd feel a bit better if the main culprits in cruise mode were then omitted. I'm not interested in giving these players an opportunity to respond. We've seen it happen time and time again eg. first quarter against the Suns.

If Goodwin is there next year we will be lucky to get 40,000 members, that was the most disgraceful effort I’ve ever seen

First Up: Vision reveals how the Saints did it in 'bonker...

Sarah Olle and Kane Cornes unpack the big issues from the round of footy

and the analysis on First Crack was even more damning. The Melbourne players didn't know what to do, and that's 100% on the coaching.

Goodwin just standing on the sidelines, saying nothing. None of the Melbourne players seem to know the rules. Wanganeen-Milera clearing the St. Kilda forwards out to the right, and he sprints off to the left, and marks. Viney 30m away, Bowey looking the other way, Max still in the circle - he should have been at CHB. Put Fritter, Melksham, Spargo (hah!) and Langford in the middle for the free, and put the best contested mark in the comp at CHB.

This failure is unforgivable.

And that's not even touching on the failure to make changes to arrest the momentum change.

Collingwood don't lose that game, and it's not just because of their list.

And don't kill the messenger; I can't stand King, or Cornes - but they are 100% correct here.

Time for change.

Just want to bump this. Can't stand Kornes but he's not without merit in what he's saying.

Not really the worst qtr of footy as THE DUMBEST!! A lot of that ought not have happened. Even whist the train wreck was in motion it COULD have been stemmed. How? Intelligent coaching. What we observed was the total LACK of coaching.

There is absolutely no excuse for that... none.

Any decent club/board would rope the coach in immediately after that game and demand a Please Explain !!

Talk about a bunny in the spotlights ... f m d

That qtr will be used by coaches everywhere.... This is how you NEVER play football. Serve up.thatvand DCM !!

Is everyone happy with barracking for commentary as appears to be quite prevalent these days? The whole last quarter it was like that. HQ got one close finish in a round of blowouts.

I know you're not necessarily blaming them but pointing out the foibles of some of our less experienced/younger players when this loss was caused by a total absence of leadership across the board (both on and off field) is remarkable.

My only thoughts to answer... a series of massive brain farts with follow throughs ..

Is it possible we have never practiced a 666 infringement / free kick. All said and done, thats all it was. Have a man on the mark and defend either by man on man or tight zone.

Which is what frustrates the most because this regime told the supporters that that would not happen. We were told that Melbourne supporters would be able to have trust in the team and players. We were told that Melbourne supporters would be able to see a defined brand of footy that the team played. We were told they were building towards a culture of excellence/consistent high performance. No you won't win flags every year but yes you will be in the thick of it at the pointy end to give yourself a chance more often than not.

We had one great year, two pretty good years with poor finishes and now back to where we were. A brief three year period, not the 10-20 years of sustained performance (with slight blips) we were sold.

There must be accountability for this, we were setup for success by Jackson and Roos and have completely butchered it due to typical Melbourne hubris.

Maybe it comes from our supporter base historically coming from the top end of town and having a "born to rule" mentality that seeps through the club so they think they have a birthright to success without having to do what needs to be done to make it happen.

Yep, the shortest ‘defined’ brand of footy and dynasty, ever. We were promised a nice car that would do 100k - 200k, but after a great couple of years, it’s on the side of road waiting to be collected, at maybe 30,000km. Probably headed for scraps.

From the doldrums we came, and it looks like that’s where we are headed, again (from hell and back, and back again, or whatever we are up to with those DVDs), as no one seems to be bothered that it took us decades to become relevant again, and who knows when we’ll get that chance again.

I feel like now is the time to focus internally on the things that we can control and that really matter.

While I think umpiring this season has been woeful, and has impacted results, and the commentators are rock bottom quality, these things had nothing to do with what we saw last night.

We had 3 sides get spanked this weekend who should have gotten the media spotlight, and we managed to somehow snatch that away from them, with the most embarrassing performance of the round. Ouch.

Not even Patrick Dangerfield eating a souvlaki will top the level of humiliation I am feeling right now as a 28 year member.

How did Turner not have one touch or tackle in the last Q when the ball was constantly down his end?

injured or just stopped?

When there's close to zero pressure from the midfield, there's very little even the very best defenders can do.

I've been at all the bad losses from 1987 til now. Sat through much frustration and embarassment. None of them, not even 186, comes close to the humiliation I felt yesterday. It was a sick joke. This club is in absolute all sorts. From admin, to players to the big fat elephant in the room, the coach! The rumblings have been going on for too many years. Goodwin should have been sacked a year ago. He survived and we have fallen further into a hole.

Membership is down 20% on last year. There will be under 10k fans next week. I don't blame anyone for not turning up next week. There is a limit to how many times a team can rip ya heart out and make you feel embarrassed. I never miss a game, but I said after this "I'm done for the year'. Proud to Belong was Goodwin's catchcry .... right now, no one is proud to belong to the MFC. Not one fan woke up this morning able to defend the Club.

If Brad Green has an ounce of respect for the fans and the long term survival of this club, he sacks Goodwin this morning.

Wheatley's intro on SEN just then almost turned me into a Saints supporter. I am almost happy for them if not for the fact their joy comes at our misery.

But he made a very good point.

"That was the dumbest 8 seconds of football ever.

Why were Melbourne's midfielders all at the centre circle? They just needed to be in the square.

Why was Viney smack bang in the middle? He could have sat further down the line.

How could WM start in the middle with 8 seconds left and then still kick the winning goal?"

It is beyond comprehension. You cannot explain or coach that away. It is a career ending 8 seconds. I suspect Gawn, Viney, Petracca and Oliver, all of their days are club leaders are numbered.

That was an absolute horror show and somewhat ironic that the Demons lost because of 666

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
