It's a myth that this is a weak draft. My understanding is that the issues with it are a) there's perhaps not the real standout talent compared to previous years and b) it's compromised by academy and father/son picks. But there are still plenty of good draftees in the first couple of rounds.

Let's not forget that this year's Rising Star was taken at Pick 17.

Yeah everyone is wrong. Reid would be a top 3 pick this year.

With the likely 💔Trac and Oliver trade departures (and with May likely now to stay) here’s the list segmented into likely positional structures. Of course, players are flexible and can shift like Rivers to running mid or Laurie to small forward.

I’ve add Mihocek. Hopefully we can get Max Heath onboard too

For me, the need for skilled running midfielders will be the primary draft priority

MFC TEAM update

key defenders: May, Tmcd, Adams

tall defenders: Lever, D.Turner, Howes

med/sml/running defenders: Rivers, Bowey, Salem, Lindsay, AMW

inside Mids: Viney, Langford , Laurie

outside Mids: Langdon, Windsor, Woey jnr

Mid/fwd: Kozzzy, Kolt, Sparrow, Culley

key forwards: Mihocek , JVR, Petty, Jefferson , Kentfield, Johnson

med-tall forwards: Fritsch, Melksham, Mcadam

small forwards: Chandler, Sharp, Henderson, Mentha

Rucks: Gawn,  Campbell

Why is there a likelyhood of Trac leaving? They won't give us Humphrey we won't give them Trac.

Yes I agree. Trac has 4 years to run. He’s a star player and we need to receive appropriate high quality compensation. Unfortunately once a player nominates they are leaving, it get done. If the Dees tough talk, they have to stand by it.

i think what seperates good sides and average ones is when you can draft ahead of your needs, lions already had morris and even henry smith on board when daniher left and already had gallop when hipwood went down, or already had fletcher when kiddy did a knee and had the ashcrofts when berry does a shoulder and neale does a calf.

geelong did it with shannon neale into hawks spot, he was already 3 years in and ready to go.

so i look at our list next year and we have mcadam, sparrow, melksham, fritsch, chandler, mentha, johnson and hederson out of contract, so we should be adding small forwards this year like dovaston or latrelle pickett so they are second years when we move on a bunch of those names (obviously some stay)

we didnt do this well with ben brown handing over to JVR and El Jefe and we aren't doing it well in the rucks either. We may get away with it for our key backs because petty did his apprenticeship and was right to go when tommo went down initially but also finding turner was a saving grace otherwise we would have been in some form of all sorts there too. the most important part of a rebuild is the spine, the roos did this wrong in the last 5 years and until they picked whitlock last year they were relying on stop gaps and NQRs in key spots, coleman-jones, teakle, pink, corr, dawson all busts. they took one tall in the first round shotgun dawson and he's struggled to come on after a good first game.

dons got unfortunate with injuries to reid and hayes and i suppose to cox (hes just not very good too) they still paid up for caddy but need him to be two years more advanced than hobbs/perkins/tsatas rather than vice versa so probably need to reassess there so that when the talls are peaking they have what the blues had with weitering tdk curnow mckay and then build around that with walsh cerra and co, thats obviously burnt to the ground now however i think they followed the process correctly

I don't like it but it looks like we will get 7 and 8 pick for Petracca. Delist then rookie Woewodin. The rebuild is here.

I don’t think we will have the picks to want to rookie Woey.

Next year is a huge inflection point - 20 players OOC and there are 5 no brainers for an extension - the rest have question marks. We can’t go that young that quickly.

I'd assume the FD has Campbell, McAdam, May and McDonald and Laurie's papers stamped, Woey too if he gets to the start line

Adams, Jefferson, Kentfield almost certainly will get 1yr-ers at least as "depth" if they havent broken through.

AMW, Culley, Sparrow, Henderson, Johnson would therefore be in your playing for a contract bracket

Mentha should only need to turn up to get a third year on the B list

leaving Melky to be a form call

and the rest are priorities, Bowey, Turner, Salem, Fritsch, Chandler

Probably not the right thread- but has there been any update on JTs contract? He’s out of contract at the end of this year is that correct still?

Very worrying if so.

I think we're in a win-win situation.

Land Humphrey and we become better quicker.

Don't land Humphrey and we get two picks that we can trade aggressively to try and get an earlier pick or we take two kids in the top 12.

As it stands, we have a handy pick at the start of the second round that we either use on Pickett Jnr or trying to flip it into a future first for next year's crop.

Can we get Robey? Is Josh Lindsay within our grasp? Do we land a Dovaston? These kids won't necessarily make us better straight away, but in time they will. In JT we trust.

We clean the cultural slate with Trac and Clarry. Does May go today too? Probably not. Do we get a solid cultural citizen and leader like Jack Steele? Hopefully. We are very skinny for midfield depth in more ways than one.

On ball movement, @Axis of Bob has convinced me CJ is the Epipen to opening up our ball movement and encouraging more risk from the back half. Add to that, we definitely have more pace now. Windsor, Kozzy, Chandler and CJ. Who do we go for in the draft?

Next year will see some more growing pains, but if all goes well, we can really attack free agency and trades at the end of 2026. We need a top 8 finish or close to do this. Natural improvement from our youngsters, better ball movement and less predictable forward play will close the gap of losing Clarry and Trac IMV, but the x factor is in the game style and new talent emerging that will tell us whether we can get near enough to the 8.

Whatever your thoughts on Lamb, we always get the deals done

Screwed over on Oliver deal, but to be honest. Oliver made his bed and caused too many issues for the club. King needs clear air to work in.

We will have had 2 first rounders last year, 2 this year and now 2 next year. I know some talent has gone out. But that not bad for a rebuild on the run

I like that we've actually addressed some key needs that we've been lacking of late.

We've gained some key forward scoring power in Mihocek, ruck depth in Heath and speed across half back in Jiath. Not to mention some midfield grunt/leadership in Steele while the likes of Langford and Tholstrup are still developing.

Plus we have four first round selections to play with over the next two season.

I'm still not sure if we're finals bound in 2026 but I think we've set ourselves up nicely for the years to come.

B: Bowey Disco Salem

HB: Jiath Petty Lindsey

C: Windsor Steele Langford

HF: Chandler JVR Culley

F: Fritsch Mihocek Melksham

Hoping we get a small forward as we desperately need one

It’s not on the run anymore. It’s full blown. GWS have been cheating since day one with scully’s old man. Got us with him, Bedford and now clarry. Can we pick one of their most promising off? I’m going to hate watching clarry run around dominating not for us

Trade week is done and dusted still not overly happy with Lamb I think he's too soft. 3 average picks for a star doesn't seem right. If we got Humphrey I would have been happy. Oliver is damaged goods, he was a champion but he's tarnished his rep the last 2 years. I think we should delist McAdam then put him on the rookie list. No room for Woewodin with May staying.

Mihocek is a star but is he too old? He'll at the very least teach the young kids to play the right way. Heath is an unknown only played 4 games. Jiath could be a good pick up but he sounds like a bit too much like Hunt and we got rid of him for a reason. Steele could also be a good recruit but like Clarry his last 2 years have been ordinary, but before that he was a star easily St.Kilda's best player back then, he adds leadership something Clarry never had.

Yes, got rid of 2 champions, albeit not at there best.

Brought in 3 ok players and 3 1st round picks.

Both ticks in my opinion.

Ill back our drafting over trade anytime .
