1964 GF Film discovered

Featured Replies

Hassa was a great player for a few more years. Dixonโ€™s kicks always seemed to go very high along the wing . Not sure they went to anyone in particular.

But it was a long time ago.

Gee, who knew Choco had been our goalkicking coach for 60 years?

So excited! All the players I read about, well a bunch of the players I've read about, actually running around and playing footy in the 64 GF! I had Mum's scrapbooks (which I gave to the club, they better still have them!) and pored through them, reliving past glories that I'd never seen since I was born after the 12th flag.

Interesting to see how many tap-ons and handballs "to self to run onto" there were . And a pack was only 4 or 5 players, not 10. TV coverage of close ups was better because there was no hand-passing in circles going out of the field of view. And with long kicks, plenty of time to chnage to a wide shot.

(Yes, I enjoy living in the past and being at that game - standing room only.)

Unforgettable memories โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

What an amazing find! Who would have thought?

Apart from the kicking skills, the game itself was very similar to a high pressure game played nowadays ... kicks to the boundary line (and the pockets) and the forward press all in operation. Intercept marks!!

And RDB's 40 metre stab pass was a thing of beauty. Hassa Mann - all class

And all those mistimed drop kicks would be handy for the chaos ball in the forward line we see these days (rather than the long bomb)

Facebook comments said it was found in a shed in Perth

It must have been labelled or it would have been ditched, how lucky is that!

I come from a long line of Dees supporters, it runs deep and wide in my blood. Our hatred of all things black and white come from generations of loathing, but in particular the 58 grand final. My dear Mum's heart almost gave out when we recruited a Weideman!! I was born just after this 64 GF game and it was part of the family's story telling. I will enjoy finding a quiet spot tonight and watch the entire game through.

Interesting insights into skills etc... Footy really was tough and hard, get the ball and move it towards your goal immediately. No fuss, no other real game plan except for go wide when defending. Tackling these days is so far advanced. When I got to open age footy, the old reserves players who were 35-40 yo were still doing drop kicks and I was wearing the old nail in stops with hard toe boot which came up over the ankle.

Dixon, Barassi, Hassa-Mann, Tuddenham - all these blokes could transfer their game into this era and still excel.

Thanks for sharing - always great to go down memory lane.

Was great to watch, names like Barassi, Mann, Anderson, Roet, Dixon, Adams, Crompton, Lord etc etc who were just names on a page suddenly come to life. So greatful for this find and freely sharing on YouTube. Now can we get a copy of the 64 SF when we belted them by 15 goals ๐Ÿคฃ

As a kid growing up 30 years after this flag all I had to go by was the 60 seconds of highlights they showed on the grand final marathon.

I have the Gabelich and Crompton goals with newsreel commentary burned in.

Like many I feared that this was lost for good - I'm delighted this footage has been found, and in such good condition! Only taken a sneak peek at the last 10 mins or so - can't wait to give it a full watch. How good is it now having decent film/video of two Grand Final wins we can enjoy!

I think Bluey Adamswas BOG.

Incidentally, John Townsendโ€™s sister, married David Ashcroft, and theyโ€™re parents of Marcus Ashcroft, and grandparents of Will and Levi. The Townsend skills have been passed on.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourneโ€™s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last yearโ€™s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although itโ€™s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sundayโ€™s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to foolโ€™s gold.
