JVR and McVee to West Coast for the picks to Freo for us to get Jackson - would we do it?

That’s giving up too much imo. I’d prefer Jackson demand to be traded and we give this years and next years firsts and maybe some steak knives.

Actually, I’ve got a better idea — Flogmantle can hand back Jacko and issue a formal apology for stealing the one, the only, the unrepeatable Wizard.

In return, we’ll give them next year’s third-round pick in the rookie draft — which, let’s be honest, will probably end up being a bloke who tops out at WAFL depth and a hamstring awareness session.

Seems fair. They get a pick. We get restitution. And the footy gods get balance restored.

Listening to Hawthorn supporters scream out ‘the Wiz’ is infuriating.

There is only one Wiz!

McVee may play a position that isn't as much value as other positions, but it's a position we need.

McVee has shown that he can play his positional very well. He is 21 years old and should improve with more experience.

He will be a lock in that position for 10 years baring injury. That's 10 years of never having to worry about a small defender.

I wouldn't be giving that up, let alone gifting it to an opposition team without significant returns.

As for JVR, he is either carrying injury or horribly out of form. He kicked 28 goals in 2023 and 30 in 2024 while also playing back up ruck. I wouldn't be writing him off cheaply either.

I do appreciate that we want Jacko and the benefits of nabbing him would be a near perfect fit. That third tall forward/ ruck is a difficult role to fill.

I've come to accept that Kozzie will leave at years end. If he doesn't then we will have to give up something of value and I appreciate the opening post thinking of options.

We don’t have a first this year

But we do in 2026 and 2027. Two years of future picks can now be traded. With Tassie coming in, it's in our interest to trade away the next two years of picks.

We need to load up on young talent now to continue building around our emerging <25s. At the end of the year i'd be putting all of our future picks on the table to get a bit haul in the 2025 draft.

I don’t think many clubs will be trying to trade in to 2025 draft judging by the feedback coming through regarding the depth of quality of this year’s cohort

That's good for us - we can take advantage of it.

Really gotta get JVR right. Desperately need him and another decent key forward.

I’m confident he’ll be fine. I think now with so few injuries we can give him a run of games at Casey to help with his game and confidence

Think he looks too bulky at the moment, doesn't seem to be moving well at all, not jumping at the footy and obviously confidence is well down.

This thread sounds like a Mission Impossible episode.

I wouldn't be trading McVee or JVR.

And hi Steve!

The top 5 worst Melb to Freo defections by level of heartbreak:

  1. Troy Longmuir - Needed someone to round out the top 5. I did like Troy though, reasonable left footer.

  1. Troy Simmonds - This one annoyed me to no end. Overshadowed by the Farmer trade that same year but we basically handed them a nice up and coming ruck as well so we could get Craig Ellis in a 3 way trade to bolster our terrible backline. At very least there was more currency to be gained from a trade.

  1. Jesse Hogan - We all saw it coming, the club acted in good faith. Still sucked though and sucks even more right now.

  1. Luke Jackson - I could say 'see above' but it wasn't the same. A flag hero whose development probably wouldn't have been served better anywhere else. Dogga was a good fit for this team, still undecided whether he is a good fit at Freo or not.

  1. Jeff Farmer - Words can't express why this is no.1 by a stretch but it just is. It really, really sucked. Think of a bus being driven into your stomach and that's before the infamous goal after the siren. The difference with Wiz and everyone else on this list is that he left for Freo at his absolute peak.

The end.

The Scott Thompson trade still hurts. Young gun who was on the verge of becoming a great player. He got injured mid year and didn't play again for us before we traded him for pick 14.

I remember discussing with other Demonland posters that we had got massive unders. We knew he was worth way more than that.

We on traded pick 14 to the cats for Brent Moloney who needed draft capital to send to Richmond for Brad Ottens. Richmond picked up Danny Meyers who played 26 games.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
