As expected our fwd line is a mess! Not sure why Turner was playing defender and not played fwd??? Either Jvr has lost fwd craft or Goodwin has confused the kid playing him ruck! How Jefferson is getting a game another bottom 4-6 finish yet this club hadn’t been able to trade in any key fwds since 2021

Better than watching the joke skills earlier in the season. We do footy pretty well, if only it didn’t involve goal kicking!

Young guns exciting.

Should have been over by 3/4 time.

Fritsch, JvR and Jeffo not too flash, really not good

Umpires are cheats or abysmally incompetent.

We absolutely were the better team.

But you are right that the key forwards are a problem. We dominated for 3 quarters in nearly every aspect of the game except once we had to do something with it inside 50.

I understand what you are saying, but we have been shocking up forward for years now, so it’s obvious the Club is not learning from mistakes and experience.

We are just repeating bad habits.

The Forward 50 is where the cream should rise…

This Coaching method is going nowhere…

Langford gives you a reason to come to watch this team. His ball use is beautiful.

Max just must want to say to his teamates anyone want to help me.

Van rooyen is not a ruck backup option

Our inability to develop a key forward post Neitz needs to be studied.

Maybe bring Neita back to the club as forward coach…

I thought at three quarter time that our misses would come back to haunt us and that's exactly what happened. Yes, the umpiring was [censored] but we completely shot ourselves in the foot with both our set shots and our f50 entries.

Too many of the same players are underperforming. JVR still seems to have no idea what he's doing. Fritsch killed our momentum missing two regulation shots. Oliver looked as flat as I've ever seen him.

On the flipside, Langford is a [censored] gun. Amazing how a 19 year old can show much more composure in front of goals than any of our senior players.

i thought roo did great in the ruck today?

Because we had no other recognised tall backs with Petty and Lever out?

Just a thought.

Makes it hard to win when you don’t have any decent forwards . Frisch has the yips, jvr has concrete hands and jeffo looks lost at this level

I don’t think it’s fair to bag JVR and Jeffo when you’ve got Gunston and Breust at the other end as comparison… And they didn’t star.

Young fellas just need time.

Enjoy the ride… And enjoy those moments from Max and Kossie.

Quality fwd entries a major issue alongside goal kicking

listening to the abc ramanauskis pointed out how, upon an attempted entry, every fwd was stationary. No leading patterns, no leading into separate lanes with separation

Who is responsible for that

The Trip

Sure. The club needs to raise that, but that’s not the game. [censored] kicking was the game. Plus going to sleep in the last.

Time to turn JVR into the greatest backman of the modern era

He's got the tank and he knows how to bring it to ground

Why did melksham need to be rested?

Reasons.

Everyone keeps saying don't play Oliver until he is fit. Last year when he came back after 1/4 of a pre-season before he broke his hand he was charging up and down the ground crashing into anyone who got in his way.

This year he's done a full preseason, his pre-season from all reports he was gut bust running and fit as he has ever been.

Fitness isn't the problem, he looks lazy at times but it's not fitness. He had explosive pace back again against Fremantle.

His quick hands are back but he just doesn't see ball get ball anymore and have the win at all costs mentality.

I think that will come back quickly.

Anyway Langford is a genuine superstar in the making and X isn't far behind and they can both use the footy

Picking for positives, I do like that Trac nailed (every time fairly) hustwaite holding the ball at least 3 times, so demoralising that he was subbed.

Lindsay and Langford are showing their weaponry now, albeit short of four quarters. So much excitement for their futures.

Frustrating game.

Didn't take our chances.

But same old story...no fwd line.

Plus we can't carry Oliver again.

Or Fritta or Jvr.

Didn't think Id ever being saying this.

It has been, allegedly, reported by a former player that this is how the coaches would like the forwards to play. It has been an ongoing issue for so long that I am flabbergasted that the Senior Coach is still employed by this club. We have dominated inside 50s for a long time now, but now that the league has caught up with us it is becoming glaringly obvious that our game plan is not up to scratch. I don't expect our senior coach to be relieved of his position this season but it has been an ongoing issue that we have made little to no grounds on resolving.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
