Christian Petracca (Melbourne)

On Hawthorn links

“And if it’s not Zach Merrett I think we might be discussing Christian Petracca and Hawthorn.

“I think Christian is open to a fresh start. Clearly he went through a lot this time last year and it was a really difficult time for him.

“With so many changes coming at Melbourne across the board, it might be the right time. I don’t believe he’s met with Hawthorn yet but I do believe that they have registered an element of interest.

“Clearly they’re in the market for another midfielder. They expect James Worpel to move to Geelong as a free agent. It’s been a need, especially with the Will Day (injury) situation and the unknown around him going forward.”

Worpel to Geelong lol they're taking the [censored] at this point.

Well now that Merritt apparently wants to go to Hawthorn (Essendon cannot get in his way), looks like we have got Petracca for 2026...

Can't believe anyone wants Trac to be traded.

Would anyone be open to the following scenario/s?
Trade Trac for Hawthorn's first 2025 pick (8) and Mitch Lewis
Trade Lever for Western Bulldogs first 2025 pick (10)

Surely the Petracca thing is just Wheatly carrying on because of his own opinion...he's the main one banging on about it in all his "wisdom".

Hawthorn won't be pursuing Petracca if they have Merritt (which will almost certainly happen now you'd think) based on his trade request

Agree any Trac trade unlikely if Merrett departs Essendon which I wouldn't mind as I love the bloke. I would like the Dees to go hard to get Mitch Lewis out of Hawthorn given he wasn't in their starting line-up for the first final against GWS.
Can't see anyone picking up Oliver's salary so the new coach will have work to do to try and find meaningful roles for Oliver, Viney and Petracca who can all butcher the ball going inside forward 50.

Me to!

Imagine the meltdown if he wins the NSM at another club or even plays a major role in another club's premiership.

To people wanting him traded: Careful what you wish for!

I can tell you 2 people who wouldn’t be open to that, the Hawks and Dogs list managers.

Even in this terrible draft I doubt we get anything inside 30 for Lever.

Meanwhile a top 10 pick for Tracc seems generous yet alone throwing in Lewis

  3. Trading Petracca would slam that window shut for at least 3–5 years.

I hate to rain on your parade @john delosa but May and Lever are both past their best and shouldn't be in the starting 22 next year.

The new coach will sort all this mess out, no more free rides for favourites you got to earn your keep in 26.

If that is the case and they aren't keen, then I'd be more than happy to keep both. The Hawks are a midfielder short (Lewis not in their first choice team) and Dogs backline cost them a finals spot. I was thinking it may not be outrageous given it is a shallow draft that is heavily compromised, but you may be right.

It is unfortunate that I am not seeing the Dees be involved in any meaningful trade news/rumours to improve the list.

By the way, I can't see North being able to offer anything I'd be willing to accept for Lever given they traded away their first round pick and so will be coming in at the earliest (pick 21) - which will get pushed back even further.

The only legitimate way Tracc was out the door was through the Hawks.

This looks to be shut with Merrett sniffing around Hawforn with his management but this could also be a smoke screen.

Clarry and Tracc have been awfully quiet this off season but looked quite chuffed to be on stage accepting their life memberships last night.

I think it's much more likely there is a middle ground where May, Lever, Trac, Clarry still play good footy in 2026 and beyond. The continued development of Windsor, Langford, Lindsay, McVee (hopefully), Bowey, Tholstrup, Turner, Rivers, Sparrow and possibly Kentfield, Culley, Moniz-Wakefield and Howes should keep us around the mark. Unfortunately, we still need improvement forward of centre and line-breaking/good ball users - which I struggle to see us doing in this trade/draft period.

But does Trac want to stay with us, that’s the burning question

I don’t want to hang on with him for another year if he has his doubts

We need a united club

Reality GS. Perhaps perception is a 10/20% part but there is no doubt that if Clarry can continue on with his resurgence in 2026 we are a much harder team to beat.

Trac’s second in the BandF is flattering for his season contribution ( based on previous standards since 2015) but a reality check on why we stayed in the bottom third of the ladder.

Our recent number of very narrow losses ( GWS, Pies 2, Saints 2, Blues and Dogs) plus very near misses vs Crows and Power where we had more scoring opportunities and generally self inflicted results definitely indicates no basket case but as just indicated our youngster’s potential we should be able to launch a more aggressive and all in one approach next season under our new Coach hopefully Bucks but perhaps King or Kelly or even Lade or Giansiracusa.

Perhaps Derksen Windhager Heath Culley plus Sinnema and White are not necessarily face changing but are all positives and realistic potential .

If only the Jacko Dogga return was not a pipedream and a top 10 draft selection a chance it would be a very good list for the new Coach to lift and gain momentum especially to overcome our inability to seal close wins not losses and pathetic and continual forward line disasters.

Roll on 2026.

PETRACCA RAISES EYEBROWS AT DEES’ B & F

Christian Petracca raised the eyebrows of former Melbourne players in the room with a curious answer to his motivations to returning to the club this year.

But he did appear to commit himself to the club for 2026 as he accepted his runner-up award in the best-and-fairest behind victor Max Gawn.

When asked by host Clint Stanaway how he had worked so hard to get back to playing after last year’s serious internal injuries he replied: “I get paid … It’s my job”.

Ex-players in the room had hoped he might have reflected on his love of the jumper or his club.

But to be fair to Petracca he quickly spoke about his passion for the game as he said he would work over the off-season to help restore the Demons to their 2021 premiership heights.

“It’s not just my job, it’s my passion. I love footy. I am competitive,” he said.

“When you have an injury like last year, some setback or traumatic injury it makes you realise how precious life is and also how appreciative we are for the job we have a players.

“It’s amazing walking back into the footy club and doing what we do every day which is being around the boys and kicking the footy.

“Day one of pre-season and over off-season I will reflect on the season we had but also how can I get better but also as a team. On behalf of all the players we are fortunate to have tasted success in 2021 and there is no greater feeling.”

Not going to read anything into that. Trac has always been a messy interview. Seemed to recover alright.

I can only find the Max video on club website.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Petracca one to see what the fuss, if there is a fuss, is about.

Anyone have a link?

Was this statement from Trac really split for clickbait purposes?? Can anyone who watched confirm?

And later, Christian said some other stuff that might be relevant in forming a view as to Christian's character.

Oliver will be, don’t know about Trac but he came second in BnF, hoping he stays, he will if Buckley is coach.

Any chance of any player wanting to come to us, I’m yet to hear of a decent player nominate us as a free agent or to be traded, very concerning and it’s been like this since winning the flag, we’re great at recruiting vfl players who we delist

Still no update on MFC website on Billing’s

Club in great shape

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.
