Listening too the MMM coverage on Saturday after the game when a caller rang in and ask the panel if they knew why Michael Newton wasn't getting a run in the 1's. Said Juice has been kicking bags of goals at Sandy. BT, Spud, and even our wonderful ex captain Garry Lyon all replied with WHO'S THAT?

Fair enough BT wouldn't give a toss but wasn't Spud down at the Dees last year helping out? And Garry Lyon - just shows how much he pays attention to what's going on with the club... disappointing.

By the way Juice kicked anther 5 goals on the weekend. Surely he's getting closer!

Heard that differently Dee-voted, Spud new a bit about him and had some comments. Garry just said he hadn't seen him which is perfectly understandable as most Melbourne supporters haven't. I doubt Gaz would want to form an opinion based on not having seen or met the bloke. Fair enough IMO.

Yep - I am with you condemned 84 - Frawley had no idea either and even said as much. He was obviously then given something on Juice and the MMM crew made reference to the fact that he new nothing one minute and then had all the stats the next. I would have thought that given they are so called experts, they should have some knowledge of players on AFL lists that are playing at VFL level. It seems however, that knowledge is not a prerequisite for the triple M team - rather just a lot of old bum chums getting together in a radio studio when they are not brown nosing Eddie at nine!

Oh, did I just say that, maybe I am ticked off at being called Pissweak!

at first frawley didnt know who he was but they would have then pulled it up on the computer and he would have then read from that.

Are you joking spud didnt even know his own nephew

Pretty tough to know all there is to know about the guys that actually play for the respective AFL teams, let alone the blokes who make up the final 5 or so on the list.

Time for the Newton hysteria to end.

He will get his chance when the time is right!

Amen to that......

And to be honest I am not surprised that members of the media don't know or have instant and immediate recall of every player on every list in the competition.

Newton has not played a senior match for the Dees, and while we all think that he is close unless these Triple M guys actually pay any attention to what is going on at Sandy (and all the other VFL clubs, just in case someone from St Kilda rings in to ask about a unplayed Saint at the Scorpions or a Bulldog supporter wants to know about a particular contracted player at Werribee) then why would they have that particular piece of knowedge about this particular player at this point in time.

In actual fact the question, if it was going to be aired, should have been held in a cue (and I have worked in talk back radio) while the required info was found for the guys on the air so that they didn't look so publicly stupid. And this apparently happened while they were on air anyway, which is just poor management.

Just my opinion of course :P !!!

I agree that people have made a big deal about Juice, but I think for now, it's justified... And I'll tell you why.

Remember last year (I think) when a mature-age rookie by the name of Rix came through the system? He's a VERY average footballer... but his entrance to AFL was fascinating. Juice doesn't have an interesting story to go with him, but he's a talent...

As far as I'm concerned, I'm sick of no-name players getting spoken about in the media when they debut for the Blues, Pies, Bombers, Saints, Richmond... I want people to suss out an MFC player early for once... and in that sense, Juice has done enough for demons supporters AT LEAST to get into talkback about him.

I wish there was SOME positive hyteria for the club. I'd take that at this stage...

Sorry - I meant exactly what you went on to say - obviously immediate recall of every single listed player would be a little difficult but in this day an age, surely it is not asking too much for media representatives to be able to pull up a few stats on each player - OK Frawley did do this but it was all very vague.

It was poor work by the MMM team.

They knew bugger all about him, yet they still gave their opinion based on oudated facts that came to their screen at the time.

They commented on his VFL reserves / VFL seniors game ratio from 2006 (roughly 13/11), and the fact that he'd only kicked one bag of 5 in the VFL seniors, and thus he was not necessarily ready to play in the big time

G. Lyon at least conceded that he was not ready to offer his opinion until he knew more about the kid

not picking onya Queen...lol...

but its an interesting comment.

Whilst maybe not knowing every player.. I WOULD expect them to have a very good depth of background on most anyone thats knocking at the next level..ITS THEIR JOB !! They are paid media professinals (???) after all. They are put there because of their supposed insight

That gazza didnt know the kid is reprehensible for someone with red and blue blood !! BT wouldnt know what size his shoes are most days.. so I'll ignore his comments for the moment.

Why are we excited about a kid like Juice... well quite frankly there isnt much else to get too carried away with this year is there ? No one expects him to be the panacea for all ills, nobody could expect him to run on and bag 5 on debut ( but how sweet if !! lol ) Juice is the next wave, the new hopes. He represents the start of an era that hopefully will ACTUALLY deliver as opposed to all the false dawns.

To dump all of this on just one kid I suppose is unfortunate. The champing at the bit is not for him per se...just what he represents.

MMM are like much of the vanilla variety commnetary currently on offer at moment... all drivel and dross coated in spin and gel.

But back to original thought provoking line.. yes I do expect the so call experts to actually know ( in an up to date and meanigful way ) what the hell they are talking about !

BT quickly becoming the new Sam Newman. If Tim Watson and the player-manager boundary riders on Channel 7 weren't around, he'd be the worst commentator in footy.

In addition they mix like oil and yoghurt mixed together. Very oily and does not offer any benefit to anyone

You are probably right about Garry bub.......

Any one close to the club should know about this kid coming through, but my comment was more general and related to the process itself.

The same thing happens up here in the league. A person rings in and asks about a player in Reserve Grade and the commentators (who on the radio are usually pretty damn good) will usually know the name, but don't have much further info than that.

So what I am saying is that maybe some of these "experts" will know some players and not others, and they should know all that have played in the AFL, but there are a still a hell of a lot lot of players to have immediate recall about, especially if they don't know the question.

So as I said the call should have been held off until the proper info was obtained for them (which would only take seconds), and it sounds like this happened on air anyway which begs the question why it didn't happen before hand, thus saving them from looking completely stupid.

Unless the calls go through unchecked, which would surprise me, given my experience, because heaven knows what you could get ;) :D !!!

We've played 30+ players this year and only four of the guys on our list haven't played a senior game. Fair enough if they don't know much about those guys IMO. Sure, it's their job - but 30+ x 16 is already a huge amount of information, let alone knowing all about the four guys who can't get a gig in the ~bottom side.

or looked at another way...they would already have some knowlwdge of all those who HAVE played before.. so its only a handful per club that might be lurking on the lists that they might need to sway up on. Any which way..its their job to know stuff.. they are the "experts' its their trade. would you turn up to work with out having done your background study?

After all the fanfare last year about all the ex superstars being brought into the club as mentors and specialist coaches etc. including Spud, loin chop, sam newman etc. anyone know if any of the huge array is still invloved?? Seems that great scheme has been very quietly shelved or has been dropped like a hot spud cf the very cold sdud on MMM on Sat evening. I heard the discussion as well.

None of them knw much at all!

Was how ever better than another station ( not sure which one) which was all interviews of Adelaide!!! WTF was that about - Crows fro SA and did not win?????

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
