This is a really a dumb statement...

Do you think we really want to let Kozzie go?

What is it with our supporters...think one of our contracted players will go but for some reason think we can't get one back.

Of course they want to improve their list, what we don't.

Our job is not to help them get a better list, it's about ours and if they really want Kozzie then they are going to have to give up something really good to get him.

I give up...

Because it rarely happens in today's AFL trade landscape that there is a player trade between two clubs, especially gun players as well.

Give me examples of when this has happened the last 5 years?

If Kozzie leaves at the end of the year and Melbourne use the same ANB home/family treatment then two early first round draft picks is the starting point.

Freo then need to get creative.

Agree with others that if he’s home sick then WC should definitely be part of any talks, much like ANB this year.

However a big factor in any Kossie deal with be the Chad Warner deal. Looks very likely that he will be going west at the end of this season. Neither club could afford to get him and Kossie. If WC get Warner then it leaves Freo with a as the only option out west for Kossie this year.

We also don’t need to panic- our handling of the Trac situation this year will have shown our players that we are willing to stick to our guns and won’t be forced into a trade.

You would imagine if he wants to leave, the Dees would know/find out and would be into the homesick Harley Reid.

I think Kozzie will stay.

A contracted Pickett is worth 2 top 10 picks is he not? WC can conjure that but whether they'd want to spend it all on Koz is highly doubtful. Freo don't have the capital to make the deal so they'll have to get creative. 2 top 10 picks is very creative in a landscape that is pre Tassie and will see clubs hold high draft picks. Personally I just can't see it happening until his contract expires. By then he may well have changed his mind.

I don’t think he is. 1 top 10 for sure and then a late 1st or early 2nd for me.

He’s not the best small forward in the comp atm and I think there’s a realistic chance that he’ll never achieve that accolade.

This is about right I think. The Bolton deal should set the price I think. He went for 10,11 and 18 with 14 coming back the other way.
If future picks come into play while Tassie team enters it may muddy the picks value a bit though.

As a fee agent you might be right but as a player with 3 years on a contract its highly doubtful the club would accept much less.

The “I’m so desperate to get back home to WA, but I’ll only accept a trade to Freo” is a blight on our game.

It's atrocious.

Can someone explain why people talk about "restraint of trade" relating to individuals (and so making free agency essential) but not clubs?

Why are all our top picks subject to raids from other clubs?

What is it about our club that allows this?

Strong clubs rarely lose top players

How many guns have we lost in the past 10 years?

Just LJ

If you ignore the media, the facts tell the story

We’ve done extremely well keeping our players happy and contracted

Maybe. There have been players we've lost for a variety of reasons like Hogan or Bedford, Howe, Grundy, and LJ as you say.

It just seems to me that our leading players seem to be targeted more than any other club bar say GWS and Gold Coast.

Is it because they think our leaders are gettable? I know some other clubs think Melbourne has a weak culture and therefore players might be vulnerable to leaving.

You're right in that we haven't lost too many of our 'guns' but it does seem they are vulnerable every year....

Tell that to Petracca and Oliver and Petty, they pushed and they went nowhere.

Different circumstances. Both happened with limited notice and the buyers either didn’t have the collateral (Coll/Carl with Trac) or were solely aiming to buy on the cheap (Geel with Clarry).

There is now a 12 month runway with Kossie and the extension of future pick trading should make both of the above scenarios unlikely.

You're probably right but there have been murmurs about Brayshaw plus Darcy will probably be usurped by Jackson or visa versa so there may be room to move there.

edit: it's a big season for both clubs. If they fail again then the glue won't be so strong to bind the team, players will look to move. If we do then it's rebuild time for us.

We are already rebuilding on the run in case you missed it. Just hoping that our existing stars will be joined by another group of A/B graders from our dozen youngsters like Windsor Langford Lindsay McVee and Rivers.

It’s about which club holds the power. If Geelong had come to us and said we’ll give you 2 high first rounders and take his salary I think Oliver would be in hoops right now. The only way Freo land Pickett is if they stump up the picks, which they don’t have. Geelong were into Oliver for 12 Months so it’s no different.

Name 1/2/3 better small forwards and his potential to be even better has to be considered in any trade.

One top 10 and then a late first rounder IMO.

He's still inconsistent (eg- near BOG against Port and then 4 possession the following week V GC) and has never been nominated in the All Australian 40 squad. He could easily get to that level though.

As pure small forwards: I’d rate Charlie Cameron and Bobbie Hill ahead of Kozzy.

As a hybrid forward/midfielder: Shai Bolton is a level beyond.

You can argue game plan and team roles have a say in the matter and that’s probably right. But ask yourself what you - as MFC supporter - would be prepared to part with to take any of the players I mention above. I suspect it’s about what I have suggested for Kozzy if not less.

Also ask yourself what opposition supporters see when they think of Kozzy? Undisciplined , goes missing but has moments of brilliance that remind you of Cyril. But are left wondering why it’s not on display more often. Does he have the hunger and the will to get the best out of himself?

I absolutely think he has the hunger. Whilst you might not get a highlights reel and 4 goals every week you do get a 4 quarter effort. His harassing, tackling and chasing efforts are never questioned. Undisciplined? Maybe but his last report was a clown show. Since when is a player liable for another player ducking/diving into a contest at the last minute?

You’d be hard-pressed to find an opposition supporter with any knowledge of football that wouldn’t love to have him in their side.

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie
