Moral of the story- long contracts of gun players are a net positive for club and player.

Not sure about the idea that we are better off as a club.

If we were, wouldn't we have been playing for the potential of being a finals contender. We are basically out, and the writing was on the wall very early, zero and five.

Tracc has been good, but he wants to win trophies, he wants big crowds, our club doesn’t match his aspirations. He hasn't been holding us together, Max has.

We are a fractured club. We signed up another big contract, which haven't served us well in the past. I hope that changes, but just can't see it.

I don't want to get into a back and forth kev, but I would argue the evidence contradicts the idea we are fractured club.

The most compellingu evidence is how many players have resigned their contracts in the last 12 months, several of whom, like koz, did not need have to do so as their contract had not yet finished.

In addition to the young players I listed above, Lever, Maxy, Viney, Langdon and now Koz have all resigned or extended their contracts.

That's more than a quarter of the list recommitted to the club in the ladt 12 months.

in fact only one player chose to leave in that time - nibbla, who left for family reasons and was at pains to say at the BF how much he loved the club.

Theres just no way that many players recommit if there is fractures or the environment isn't supportive and positive.

As for long contracts not serving us well again I respectively disagree, foe reasons I've already articulated.

But we will of course see.

But leaving aside tbe debate about koz's contract, I think we can.both agree just how awesome it is that he is staying at the club.

I was, and remain so, just so stoked when I heard the news. I felt like a kid again. Love it

agree with most of this, except that a lot of people were talking about trac as a likely next skipper for the last several years before the issues at the end of last season

it's always been him or lever as the likely candidate

I'll give you a tip Trac or Lever wont be the next skipper.

Disco, Kozzie or McPhee have have more more chance

The contracts have become meaningless. The small contracts can be bought and if we don't match them, chance they will go.

The big contracts are problematic, others cannot afford to buy them, Tracc as an example, does he really want to play for us especially if we continue in this unsuccessful mode. The big contracts are usually back end loaded. As they age, and become good role players or retire injured, we are stuck with big cap fillers. I would rather us be like Geelong than Richmond, and hold the core together, with aging stars sacrificing some salary at the next contract negotiation, for a chance to take the lollies. I love the loyalty. The whole reset of the team doesn't seem to work well.

Calling out for the lobotomiser's.

Wish I was a group think.

If they are backended it is to stop players getting paid early and then asking to be traded out - this is what Ablett Jr did after getting paid by the Suns on a frontloaded contract.

Kozzie won't be skipper, hates the media stuff like Dusty at Richmond.

Turner or McVee are a long way off, decent young players but what are you basing their leadership credentials on?

Neitz was nervous and hated media. He is on record saying he threw up before games with nerves.

Don't discount Kozzie

There is another ripple effect with Kozzy's long term commitment.

If I put myself in Kalani White's shoes, in Kozzy here's one of the AFL's most exciting players, who would likely have a close playing relationship with Kalani. Kozz has stated for the world to hear he loves the Dees and believes in their long term success. Kalani could dream about what he and Kozzy could do together - then add playing next to the best ruck of all time...

That's got to pump a young fella about his future at the Dees.

Could there be another ripple effect with how Casey performed?? A butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazon jungle, through the countless build of many little disturbances and impact, a cyclone hits Hong Kong...

Re your 'minority view' sentiments yesterday, @binman, perhaps a minority of the expressed views?😉

Btw, yours and @Kev's debate has remained remarkably civil for one of such length on here! You don't perhaps know each other in real life, do you? 😄

Just ran into Kozzie in Rundle Mall. He’s looking very relaxed and says he’s pumped for today’s match. 🥳

Lucky it was Rundle Mall. Any other Adelaide road and he'd be making a no-fault claim with Zurich.

I once met Jimmy Stynes in Leederville (WA) shopping area. He had a great game, and we beat them (Eagles).

Love when the players are relaxed and going about normal activities prior to having adrenalin and effort in the game.

Go Dees

Go Kos

(1) We have no way of knowing whether a 34-year-old Kozzy will have anywhere near the pace and zip that excite us all today.

A 34 year old Kozzie would not be expected to have the pace and zip that he currently excites us… rather, he will have developed the smarts to make the most of the talents he has at that stage of his career.

Do players like Travis Boak, Darling, and other veterans, keep going with the skills they had when they were in their early 20’s? Of course not… they have honed their skill set and adapted it to suit their current physical abilities.

Kozzie will also, at that age, be a great mentor for players entering the system. No one would or should expect him to be performing at the level he does now, in the latter part of his contract.

I don’t know…when you’re in Rundle Mall, if you suddenly hear the strains of Duelling Banjos approaching… run!!!

Most of his team mates would be happy for him , considering that they would NOT be getting a u beaut pay rise in the near distant future.

It does NOT matter if we put all our eggs in the one basket and it does NOT matter if we cannot afford decent key position players.

Relax… you shouldn’t get yourself all tied up in NOTs over this!!

I’ve met them both and it’s no surprise they’re engaged in a civil debate 🙂

Much as I hate to do so, you could add J.Howe to that list. 35 this month.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
