The players checked out early last year, Gorg. Playing for the $$$$'s only

All under the watch of Goodwin it must be said, but we have got a real issue with many on the list

Need to overhaul the list

But how many players would be moved on under a Goodwin lead team...
I dont think many.

I can see Richardson being the scapegoat here, meanwhile things will be as they always are, nothing will change, we will win a few then lose a few and the cycle continues.

Yep. Richo will be gone if not “downgraded”. Much like Mahoney was who then left because he felt undermined.

Rinse and repeat.

Maybe but overhauling the list would involve the FD, not just Goodwin

Do you believe that the players have checked out? At least a number of players?

Scary.. isn’t it. Going to be a hard road for the board to figure out things to get back to 2021 standards, on and off field. They also shouldn’t settle for that and need to push to be one of the big clubs. Unlikely to happen, but settling for mediocrity is not good enough.

For all intents and purposes Goodwin is the FD!

  • Unlkely assist coaches will upset the boss.

  • Richardson has had plenty of opportunities to overhaul the list. iirc Taylor and Lamb report to him. I've not seen much evidence of a list overhaul (aside from adding 1st round picks) so am not expecting them to in the future.

If Graham Wright was coming in as CEO we might see an overhaul. He overhauled Pies list to win a premiership. He is about to overhaul Carlton's list. Hopefully, they don't win a premiership any time soon.

At this stage there is no obvious person in the FD/Club to push back on what Goodwin wants.

The FD needs an arguably bigger overhaul than the playing list, which is why this off-season is likely to be an absolute clusterf--k. There is a huge lack of leadership at board level and at the club, players probably want to leave, opposition players probably don't want to come here (poorly run club, culture problems, Casey, smaller club, possibly bottom 4 team, etc) We have a vast amount of our salary cap tied up in Trac, Clarry, Gawn, May, Lever, Kozzy and for the most part the onfield performances have been putrid. Issues such as the forward line, ball use, i50's have been ignored and patched over for years, the same thing as putting a poster or picture over a hole in a wall. I am absolutely terrified for how badly these next few weeks and the off-season could go.

How many assistant coaching changes has Goodwin had? Anybody know? Seems a few, but nothing changes.

Hopefully gone by morning.

Take CEO / President out of it for a minute, you know you’re gone, you’re going to get paid, just make it smooth.

Let's not forget that Goodwin was relegated to the bench a few years ago and with it, a number of responsibilities were taken away from him

Anyway, at least Goodwin is trying his best

Can't say the same for the Mercenaries & freeloaders sucking money out of the club (certain players)

If players want to leave they can F.O

Get what we can from them in trades

We're in for a truckload of losses anyway so we may as well bite the bullet and clear out the deadwood

Significant? At least 3 I think.

Goodwin won’t be sacked, not when the season is still going. They’ll wait to until the season has ended before they make any official call. He can’t survive this.

I’d assume they’d be doing some ground work behind the scenes to plan for the next coach but any announcements won’t happen until the season is concluded.

I have no sources, just my opinion on what the board will do over the coming weeks/months.

We aren’t in the position to hand over a list that is on the cusp of success anymore so to get a coach like Longmire, Buckley, Simpson or Hinkley would be the wrong move in my opinion.

Completely agreed.

I prefer we chase an experienced guy to replace Richo, and then just go for the best most experienced assistant out there.

At the very very least we MUST get an entirely new assistant coaching panel.

I am not here to hang [censored] on anyone in particular, but our midfield and especially our stoppage work has been diabolical at times this year, which is unacceptable with the players we have in there.

The way our midfield capitulated and just made the dumbest decisions in the last quarter yesterday, has to be examined. It's not the first time either.

I find it odd that he persists to coach from the bench, you just cant see the whole picture from down there, at this level of football, you need to be across absolutely everything.

To be fair we lost two assistants to senior roles, which is actually a credit to Goody and the club.

Chaplin and Stafford were/have been around for a long time.

I worried when we lost Yze and then McQualter, and replaced them with inexperienced assistants, because I just didn't know who would run the box on match days. That used to be Yze's job, and then McQualter's, who were both very experienced guys that have coached before as caretakers.

I have no idea who runs the box now. I saw Jones on the phone late in the 4th quarter on the telecast.

Now don't get me wrong, love Jones as a player, but nobody will convince me that he's got the experience to run a matchday box!

Do people really believe sacking Richardson and then getting another bunch of assistants will change things? We've seen it before. Goodwin's message is old and stale, we need a fresh voice at the top.

You can sack him, doesn't matter who comes as interim.

They have plenty of time to look for the right replacement. This season is cooked.

Most of the overseas sports are, it's a quintessential 'Australian' (almost AFL centric) hang-up that you should just preserve in the face of poor results. Multiple examples that we could sight on the overseas sporting front.

That way of thinking also applies to list management as well

AFL fans are notoriously parochial and while that does create a strong sense of connection to a club and its players, I think we need to move towards international norms when it comes to player movement

That doesn’t mean turning the trade period into a system like the NBA, where players are moved on at will by GMs and players are forced to relocate their entire lives at a moments notice

But I think it’s being more open as an industry to moving on your valuable players - even if they’re favourite sons - if it sets the club up for long term success

Reluctance to do so can set your club back years and I think it’s the position we find ourselves in now

I tend to agree but wasn't he relegated to the bench after the FD review in 2020?

Oddly enough, we won the flag the next year? Go figure

But I said it a few months ago on this very thread ... the players rule the roost and we gave them even more leeway in the off-season

Bad move as you can't have the cart before the horse

Results aside, Goodwin is doing his best

Are the players giving their all? Or kicking back waiting for someone else to do the hard yards

The danger is that our young players are getting caught up in it all. Watching the senior players not give a yelp

How about we thank certain players for the flag and then send them on their way?

Yep i think you are right. However you just cant see the game from ground level, which may be a part of the reason he is slow to adjust. I agree he is doing his best, but IMO he is a limited coach and needs everything going right.

We have how many reviews since the review!

Senior players are ruling the roost on gifted and ridiculous long term contracts as well. And I'm all for shaking their hands (and Goodwins) and starting fresh with the young group we have. Trade in some good leaders

He's not the problem

Trade out

Let's be realistic. Are you planning to move on Petracca, Oliver, Salem, etc in one off season? Is that even feasible?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
