With the last few weeks - there has been a stay of execution. Today we won the 'moral' victory of predicted scores.... we lost badly due to goal kicking. Absolutely terrible goalkicking from guys who are paid serious money to kick a footy.

All the good work in the coaching box was undone today. The hangman is reaching for the noose again

Nothing to do with the goal kicking?

Seriously??

blame the coach when if they kicked straight would’ve won by 6 goals

So WTF is Goodwin doing about this??? Its costing us games!

Goody’s job is to implement a game plan in which players play defence and offence in a way that creates sufficient opportunities to kick more goals than the other side. He did his job. We had plenty of opportunities.

There are no adjustments on earth Goody could’ve made that would’ve stopped that amount of dreadful kicking.

What is Goody’s responsibility now, though, is making the necessary change to who coaches goal kicking going forward.

Well guess what.... I can fix it and with my Phys Ed Teacher and Grad Dip in sports science I can fix it DEFINATELY!

That’s fantastic news I’ll call the footy club tomorrow and let them know they should expect your resume

Give it a try by all means. But i'm not sure the membership team would know what to do with that call... or the resume....

Goody will see his contract out. We haven't had a competent board in place, and our administration has been a mess. Be interesting to see who replaces him when the time does come.

Rubbish

That loss was totally down to goal kicking

Pressure rating in the 130s.

Kicking straight may have seen us win but the lack of pressure was the reason we lost.

Lucky you could teach Phys Ed because you certainly couldn't teach English.

Really ? The times I saw it, we were 230+

I don't know where to find it but that's what they said on Kayo. They may have only been talking about the last quarter but I thought they meant the whole game. They said it was the 8th lowest rated pressure game under Goodwin and the last quarter was the worst quarter under him.

What has happened to Fritta?

He used to be straight as an arrow. Now, devoid of confidence. Did he change his mechanics?

Yeah well self taught keyboard skills, shizzen application and one finger cap locks et al, but you know over a 40 plus year career.. never a complaint and many students who have made their mark on society even with my at times substandard skills in this regard!

He is not kicking through the ball, but rather trying to guide every shot!

Pressure ratings can sometimes be misleading in high possession games. The saints had 100 more disposals than us and a 140 marks which is just ridiculous. They made the ground wide and played keepings off the whole game. Unfortunately when you play a zone defence, you just open up pockets of space.

That's only part of the story, look at our work around stoppages. Looked at the number of broken, slipped or ineffective tackles. Look at the easy possessions they got out the back because players weren't running hard enough to cover space. Our pressure was deplorable.

Not the greatest coaching by Goody today. Lyon parked the bus and played rebound footy at which we failed miserably.

Too many quick defenders pushing high leaving only the plodders to defend.

The goal inaccuracy has become a coaching issue no matter what is said.

Anyway the thoughts of final 8 are now over. Let's see if we can work on the gameplan.

The big test comes in the first half of next season

Yeah I agree their intensity was way off. But surely to allow an opposition 140 marks comes down to coaching too? Surely it's just not a matter of asking the players to close down space but not being able to. Clearances were relatively equal and contested possessions were too.

After the frustration of the Demons in Alice yesterday I had to delve into the data of how bad our kicking has been since the start of the 2022 season to date.

Since this was completed between screaming kids getting to bed on a Sunday night, there might be a 2% error rate in the data but you'll get the gist of what I was trying to find out.

Since the start of the 2022 season till after todays match:

  • Melbourne has played 84 matches.

  • Melbourne has kicked more points than goals in 32 of those matches. (approx. 40%)

  • Melbourne has won the Inside 50 count 25 times in those 32 matches.

  • Melbourne has won 13 matches and lost 19.

  • This year alone Melbourne has kicked more points than goals 8 out of 12 matches.

I'd be curious to see wether our numbers are compared to the rest of the league for the same period?

I'm worried that we are the clubhouse leader by some margin...might be time to head to the chalet!

Rubbish, he’ll see his contract out because unless we totally drop the bucket he’s doing a reasonable job transitioning the game plan. Today hurts, no doubt about it, one of the more frustrating days at the footy but I’m putting today fairly at the feet of the players. I reckon they thought it was going to just happen and then they shti the bed kicking for goal.

We are scoring 14% of our inside 50 (goal conversion).

AFL average is 24%.

😭😭😭😭

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
