Laurie was told that he’ll be in for just the one week in replacement of Sparrow.

Not sure you can rationalise it any other way after a career best game. Not doing his confidence any good.

Feels so weird going from Laurie should be delisted and he’s useless a month ago to can’t believe he’s been dropped

Almost like the FD have a long term plan for every player that isn’t based on a single performance

Lol surely not. Would mean they drop Sparrow with the intention of the playing him one week and only one week in the magoos?

Not sure if destroying the confidence of a player after a career best game is a good long term approach.

I am sceptical he makes it long term but a very strange omission.

career best game? he played on the ball for the most time in his career so funny enough he racked up a few stats. and he did pretty well. Has previously been playing HF HB etc but not playing any worse imo

If the FD reckon he is not a long term on the ball option it makes complete sense. despite Laurie having his confidence hurt.

to be brutally honest - he is too small to play on the ball. I don’t think we should take players feelings into account in selection decisions

Laurie must not be doing what he’s being asked. There is no other explanation for why they’d drop him after his game last week. He must be missing something.

This is a sensible consideration. From our perspective as fans we can only guess what role/instructions etc. are given the players.

The Club has a range of professionals whose job it is - amongst other things of similar nature -  to talk to the players and explain the reasons decisions are made at selection. And I know this because Chocco almost bit my head off when I asked about it. He said, “OF COURSE we have professional counsellors, we don’t just say ‘yeah nah not good enough son, back to the seconds for you’.”

I hope Choco visits the sports psychologist when our kicking skills and  shots at goal are  poor. He would be in intensive therapy, and he should be. 😳

Yep agree whilst the jury is out with Laurie he SHOULD have been perservered with, this sends out a SHOCKING message to him IMV! ANNNNND wheres Jeffo??? And that great converter and Key forward extraordinaire Petty still gets a gig!??

reckon Jeffo should stop kicking shanks and he might get a run

So is the AFL (and other posts including MFC posts) calling the western bulldogs, ‘Footscray’, again?

Is this a niche Footscray round? Or a mistake?

They’re rebranding for ‘Retro Round’

I'm guessing Laurie was dropped because his defensive positioning and efforts are well below the required standard, which might not be obvious to people who watched Saturday's game from the comfort of their living rooms. It was noticeable that he was not on the ground towards the end of the game, along with several other young players.

That said, he is a little unlucky because I have the same concerns about Moniz-Wakefield and Tholstrup, and they seem to get multiple opportunities.

Ultimately what I take from this week's team is that we love rewarding mediocrity, and that our depth is non-existent. 20 of the 22 who started in the terrible performance against Fremantle 11 days ago are playing this week. The other two are both injured.

Unless we prefer what Kolt brings?

Like if Kolt was Trac (I acknowledge he's not), Trac would come straight back in.

I think this says something about Laurie, but it says more about how we value Kolt.

I think...

Laurie was decent last week and harsh that he's dropped. However let's not pretend he was best on ground, his game still needs serious work.

Doggies off a 5-day break, they are 5 from last 6, ahead of themselves after knocking Sydney, 1.28 odds.

Well beat them just because it’s going to be the anti favourite round

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
