Another article from the Herald Sun on line edition which is probably only available for subscribers.

This one is about the many players across the AFL who are left without contracts for next year and asks about their fate. Will they stay or will they go?

Josh Barnes looks at Melbourneā€™s list as follows:-

ā€œUnrestricted free agents: Tom McDonald, Jake Melksham, Adam Tomlinson, Marty Hore, Joel Smith

Non-free agents: Ed Langdon, Josh Schache, Oliver Sestan, Kynan Brown, Kyah Farris-White, Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Ben Brown

Plenty of questions around the Dees as the season carries on. Older players like Ben Brown, Adam Tomlinson, Josh Schache likely go. Ed Langdon will sign a new deal soon and Jake Melksham wants to earn one in the next couple of months. Does Tom McDonald go again?

Youngster Andy Moniz-Wakefield should get a new deal, while surely Joel Smith will drop off the list. This masthead revealed last week that young backup ruck Will Verrall had committed to a new deal, while surprise forward Daniel Turner has also inked a new deal. Lachie Hunter has a contract in place for 2025.ā€

Barnes then gives his views on which of the uncontracted players will remain at the club in 2025 as follows-

Signing on: Langdon, Melksham, Moniz-Wakefield
Holding fire: McDonald
Going: Schache, Smith, Tomlinson
Retiring: B Brown
In the air: K Brown Hore Faris-White Sestan

I think Kynan Brown will stay and thereā€™s a good argument for retaining every one of the three ā€œin the airā€.Ā

Of course, there might be additional list changes as a result of possible trades and itā€™s Interesting that Lachie Hunter is mentioned given that heā€™s not getting a game at AFL, having been passed by a couple of the clubā€™s young guns on their way up.

Ā

Will Verrall signed a new deal?

I'm pretty sure Hunter's contract finishes this year and can't see him getting an extension.

I assume this is the HS dispensing with the fact-checking.

Smith, Schache and BB will be done after this year. TMac may hang up the boots too, but given his year, I'd love him to play on.

This'll leave 3 or 4 spots. I think we'd prefer 3 list spots.

And then there's Hunter...

Pretty sure that Hunter's contract expires at the end of this season. If we have extended him by another year it's sheer madness. Have I missed something? The original contract definitely expires at the end of 2024.

I recall an interview a few years ago where TMac said he'd like to play until he was 35. That was before his most recent foot injuries.

In a couple of interviews this year he's stated that he's treating 2024 as his last year and he was determined to enjoy it, whether he was playing at AFL or VFL level.

I think he's surprised himself and the club with his form this year. If his body holds up for the remainder of the season, I doubt it would take much to convince him to go around again

He is playing great footy

Ā

I would prefer to keep TMac for 1 more season. Tall key position swingmen are rare and TMac has shown incredible skill at both ends of the ground. His fitness and mental toughness are also great for young players to see and imitate. I can see Disco Turner being our next generation swing man but it might be one more season away.

Delist - Hunter, Smith, and Schache.

Retire - BBB

Lose to other clubs - Laurie, Tomlinson

Lachie has stagnated on 199 games for months. šŸ˜

Yeah I thought initially he signed a 2 year deal with us?

Reported as such through numerous media outlets. Just not sure if it has been extended.Ā  Can anyone confirm or otherwise?Hunter is completely cooked. His troublesome calf seemingly beyond repair. Gave us a good 2023 but is now a list clogger. Really hoping his contract expires this season.

Luci / R&B forever's contracts thread is usually spot on. It has Hunter's contract ending in 2024

Yep, I saw the interview about him being determined to enjoy his footy in 2024. It sounded like he didn't think his body was capable of another season but you never know.

Goingā€¦ BBB (retired). Ā Schache (delisted) Hunter (delisted) Farris-white (delisted- Cat B) Ā  Js29 suspended Ā Gus10(medical retired)Ā

On the edge ā€¦ Sestan

to be decided. Tmcd and MelkshamĀ

Likely to seek other opportunities- TomlinsonĀ

Ā

Will T Mac go around again??

ah [censored] yes he willĀ

how is that even a question?

Ā

It seems as though our tall stocks are going to take a fair hit this off season with all of BBB, Schache, Tomlinson and Smith, likely to be moved on at seasons end. KFW might earn another year on the rookie list depending on how the club have seen his progress this season. Petty of course might also depart for SA.

Sestan and Hore are probably likely than not to be retained.Ā I can't see Hunter getting a new contract considering his recent injury issues.

I'd imagine that TMac plays on for one more season.

Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sundayā€™s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullartonā€™s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Caseyā€™s three matches and, with Melbourneā€™s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next weekā€™s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forwardā€™s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasnā€™t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the teamā€™s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourneā€™s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season.Ā There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight.Ā Since that game, the Demonsā€™ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where theyā€™ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ā€˜G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sundayā€™s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
