So why would we expect 2025 to improve his value if he hasn’t changed his ways or lived up to what he said he’d do? More likely that next year just tanks his value more - club seems to be thinking it’s time to cut losses and move on

True, But we had emerging superstars in Trac and Clarrie, Gawn was at his best and so was May and Lever.

I take what you are saying and I know I should have some hope/trust in the club, but F-Me its realllllllllllllly hard right now.

You might be right, but equally you don't know if the division over Clarry will continue. You have many in the club, including the coach and captain who want him to stay. If that decision is taken out of their hands, how will that impact other areas? 

Goody would be feeling almost untenable in his role, if the CEO/Board is telling him that they don't trust that he can get Oliver back on track. 

If we are to have a total reset, then it will take so much more than just removing the distraction around Clarry.
Do you think Trac won't be a distraction next year? You think trading Clarry for a future 1st and watching Geelong win a flag is not going to be a distraction? You think Clarry is the only naughty boy at the club? 

The reality is that our issues run deeper than Clarry, and fans are impatient. They don't want to watch our window slammed shut, while clubs like Geelong continue to benefit off us.

This club lost 10,000 members in 2024, off the back of 2 top 4 finishes, and a flag, because we had a mediocre season. Can this club survive trading the best player they've had in 20 years for a packet of chips, and finish bottom 4 in 2025? 

And will we be able to attract anyone of significant talent to this club, to fill the enormous gap Clarry leaves behind? 

 

As I said, you live and die by these decisions. This could make our club, or it could break it. 
Unfortunately I have such little faith in the people who run this club, that I find it hard to support anything they do right now, including botching this trade up SO bad, that we are pushed into a corner to trade Clarry for well under his value.

I’m here to a point. If I looked at our club and thought it’s a well run tight ship I’d absolutely be backing them in. Currently we’re not being well run and my guess is although Oliver has a large share of the blame here the club appears to have allowed him more leniency that has served useful.

His 2024 season was average, there is an unknown if he will ever reclaim his form and the off field behaviour is concerning.

The question will be how much the dees want him to leave.

Maybe.. just maybe, this actually comes back on the Individual for once and not the club.

Oliver is a bloody 27 year old grown adult. For once how about he takes responsibilities his own actions.

The club literally had to move Oliver in with the Gawn family last year because of his off field issues. Sums it all up.

The footy club have seriously thrown every ounce of support and bended over backwards for him to try and keep him on the narrow straight. I'm comfortable if the club wish to trade him. They've done everything they can. 

Geelong are not certainty to fix him. Jack Steven and Mitch Clark come to mind? Bailey Smith and Clayton Oliver in the one room on a Saturday night.. good luck.

Agree, the days of Oliver being worth a top ten pick, let alone multiple top ten picks, are gone as it stands. 

The writing on the wall from the situation is that Oliver will go. I suspect some posters on here will be in for a rude awakening regarding the return.

I'm largely with you on this, but I think there is merit and cathartic value in making the big statements. 

I don't mind the lows. I guess that's part and parcel of being a Demons diehard. We (the last 60 years) have had wayy more lows than highs, and those lows have been pretty low, probably lower than most.

What I DO mind, and what does test the faith, is that this is not a natural low. You know, the ebb and flow of teams - you ride high, players get older, and you gotta rebuild. Unless you're the cats, of course - who don't seem to ride that low, and don't have the constant battery of accusations of poor culture/players wanting to leave/drug scandals/board issues etc etc... but anyway, I digress. This is not that - we won the flag in '21 and were on the cusp of a dynasty - best team we had fielded in yonks. Generational talent. Since then, we have had nothing but culture/scandal/missed opportunities (although I still say last year was bad luck, and would have been different had any one of the things that happened, not happened) - Tracc wanting to leave - the debacle surrounding that. Clarry issues - over two seasons - constant comms nightmares - nobody seems to be on the same page. Strange, inconsistent performances on field - getting belted by Freo TWICE in embarrassing circumstances. A team that did not even make the finals. If we lose Clarry - and we lose Tracc (in 25 or 26) - and people think we're going to improve next year - I ask, HOW? Viney is at the end. Rivers and McVee are good, but they are not star studded midfielders. There is no way to argue they are a like for like swap for Tracc and Oliver. Next year will likely be very ugly. We don't have draft capital this year. I want to, but I can't see how we climb out of this wreckage BETTER than where we were. 

I think now, and fine, perhaps after the review for the club to draw a line and explain to its members how we are here so soon after a premiership, and what the plan is to return to glory, before another 57 years.

I'm a 20+ year member and I am not cancelling my membership,. In fact I'll be signing up my 5yo and 1yo next year. BUT I want to know they will see success some day, and that the club is actively doing something about it, not just sticking the head in the sand!

It stuns me that people think that once Oliver shifts across to Geelong he will then win the Brownlow, be finals MVP, win a premiership etc….

Oliver clearly has issues and I doubt even a good culture can eradicate the problems he has. I believe he’s on a slippery slope and won’t get back to his once dominant self. He has already peaked.

It feels like a real rock and hard place moment.

It is reminding me of Charles Haley, one of the great defensive ends in the NFL who helped the 49ers win two superbowls. He had some serious demons and some of his behaviour was just flat out disgusting towards the end of his time in San Francisco, the players had honestly had enough and the GM and coach felt the situation was untenable. 

Meanwhile the Dallas Cowboys and Jimmy Johnson needed a defensive end and felt they could help Haley and work with him to better himself, they went on to win 3 Superbowls in the 90s with Haley being a crucial part of that. The balance of power in the NFC almost shifted with that one trade.

The point of this is that you sometimes find yourself as a club in these crud situations. We may have a very good reason to move Clayton on, but there is that possibility that the fresh start and a change of scenery could see him back to his best and help the Cats win another flag. I would be hoping that doesn't happen and from a cynical side that he doesn't reach the heights he did with us but if it does help to improve our culture.. Ah it's too heartbreaking to think about this right now.

But it’s not that easy is it, you’re saying the club has been too lenient but there’s plenty on here saying the club needs to be more lenient and keep him - club can’t win here except make the best of a bad situation they didn’t create.

As good as he’s been he needs to sort his own life out and the club can only do so much. If he can’t get a handle on it living at Max’s place what more can they do?

It's not where the deal started. The TPP has gone up and Oliver gets his slice of that.

With things like the Mac Andrew deal and Saints offeering 900k a year to Leek Aleer I don't think that sort of money is as eye-watering as it used to be.

There are recalcitrants who's off-field antics brought shame on themselves, but didn't impact their teammates. Stengle and DeGoey come to mind. But from what we are hearing, Oliver's actions has impacted the playing group. And the standards set for Oliver isn't the same as the rest of the team. You can't have that in a club.
