Melbourne- The one quarter specialists.

How can we expect to win games when we play well for just one quarter?

The game-plan in the first three quarters was an absolute joke, and Daniher needs to take responsibility for that. He loaded the forward line with Neita, Robbo, Miller and White, and yet we took 20 minutes to get the ball into the forward line.

Thankfully, we woke up in the last and played like a completely different side.

However, playing one good quarter of footy a week is not going to win you games.

Something has to change! We cannot possibly play like world-beaters for one quarter, and like wooden-spooners the other three.

If the MFC is trying to drive us crazy, they are doing a fine job. Winning games on the other hand...

Stupidest match-up of the season.

DANIEL BELL. Why did they not play our most accountable medium defender on him?

The game plan and the match-ups and the team selection are just a complete mystery to me half the time.

Why does everyone bag Brown? He was fantastic today. Why hang it on someone who has a crack all day?

If you want to bag someone, try Miller. The guy has absolutely nothing going for him. He can't mark, kick, tackle or handball and his decision making has to be seen to be believed - I think the commentators are far too easy on him.

Some guy in the bar asked me why Miller is so over-rated? I said, "Who by for Christ's sake?"

everything you just said about miller is the same about brown, he gets nothing possessions, cant kick, always takes the worst option, never looks forward always looks to the side or backwards, doesnt really man up, how many of browns possestions really hurt the roos?

Brown could be so great, he runs and gets lots of possessions, I admire him, he tries to create but he just cannot pinpoint his kicks to a man. But he deserves his spot. Ward does not. Miller is so frustrating, just kick the damn ball !

Is it confidence (lack of) or what, this team must have better skills than they are showing currently, what has gone wrong? Surely the last quarter has shown them that running hard, taking the first option quickly and kicking the ball long, is the best way for them to play.

However I predict we will win a few games in the second half of the season, apart from last weeks abberation they are looking better. The law of averages would suggest that sooner or later we will win a game if we get so close !

Brown could be so great

You can say the same about other players on our list.

Unfortunately they're not, and at 30-31 years of age Brown isn't getting any younger.

I hope he enjoys 2007 because it should be his last.

Doggy at least ran all day. Once had to run from half forward to half back aas no one else did.

During 2nd & 3rd qtrs Demons did not run hard at all.

Totally agree with this thread! Coaches were really lucky the players reverted to playing normal footy in last qtr and nearly pinched the game with 20 mts of proper play. Could have been very ugly if had not.

The "*^*&" hand balling - clearly on instrcutions is what cost us the game. Neita handballing after mark 4om out to ricky pettard facing away from goal and with a roo player on both sides?? WTF was that for????

Another sharp contrast was difference in kicking out from when a point was scored. Roos used to mount a thrust forward and got ball out to wing and beyond eaasily. MFC turned the ball over several times and struggled to get it out. Roos very quick and in 1st 3 qtrs especially very slow to get going - waiting until all players covered ?????

i have to agree with you.

Brown week in week out put his body on the line. One of the few who actually play for the jumper. OK he turs it over sometimes. But for mine he should not be compared to ward at all. brown has a heart as big as phar lap!

True, and watch how teams never man him up, and just let him get the ball as often as he likes... because they know he won't hurt them.

I wouldn't mind if he was an accountable defender, who had heart and guts and occassionally turned the ball over. But he cannot play the link man down back, when he can't kick. It's killing our forward thrust and causing turnover after turnover. The same goes for Ward.

I loved seeing Bell kick the ball to a leading forward yesterday. His kicks were spot on, and hit the target. He is someone who is capable of playing that sort of role, not Brown. Sadly, because our backline lacks accountability, we can't afford for him to leave his position too often.

I can't quite believe how much bagging Brown is getting. I understand the frustration in his kicking but at least he is running forward not sideways. Can't any of you see how down on confidence this whole team is?????? They are so afraid of making an error that they kick short to keep possession rather that be the one to turn it over. That doesn't come from instructions but natural instincts. It wasn't until they had nothing left to lose that they started to run and carry and look like the footy team we know we have. Don't you all see how they stand still afraid to go forward for fear of a turnover and being caught out of position. Also we haven't been able to get the same team on the park 2 weeks in a row which makes it bloody hard!!!!!!

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
