The real state of the game

Featured Replies

It seems to be a weekly occurrence now that games are won or lost due to crook umpiring decisions. Fer C/Sake, there's four of them now and yet yesterday two E Coli Wobblers were allowed to run over the mark of a North player and four umpires turned a blind eye. There is now an epidemic of these contentious and or/ non decisions which in my case have caused a kind of contempt for the state of the AFL, bordering on suspicion that more sinister aspects lurk behind the mythology of a Level Playing Field.

Of course the AFL have ticked off that wrong decision.

So what solutions do you have then, umpires can only pay what the see most times when 20 players are around the ball, do you propose we stop the game and go to the video on every decision?

How about they DO pay what they see.   Thousands upon thousands can see the howlers..  There's 4 out there..   The idea is they position themselves to cover all angles.    But the weasels wuss it.

The only way we will see any change under the Current System is if Umpires are made available to front the Media after each game, similar to Coaches..

Just read the headline: Robo stating level of umpiring is lowest...Now, I will never admit to following Robo because I don't but my point is exactly what I wrote. And, just for the record, how can 4 bloody umpires ignore 2 Collingwood players running over the mark, A, and B, I thought only one player had that role anyhow. So nobody is asking for instant replays, people like me would just like to see consistency and not what is becoming more and more obvious, that one side - especially if it includes a Daicos - gets all the breaks.

Of course media Muppets moan because they want ratings and sales mistakes are always going to be made big deal players lose more games than umpires,  don't listen to Cornes he is just a gutter opinion person, all this bagging will end up with kids not taking it up as it does filter down below.

Do you watch the game today it's nearly 36 players in one half of the ground it's congested.

Our once great sport has been tripe since the Stand Rule, No Third Man Up and nominating of Ruckmen. I used to look forward with enthusiasm to an intra club game,  preseason, all the way down on the Mornington Peninsula with the new players at the club and just for Hopes sake we may make the Finals that year. I Thank the Club for 2021 because my interest now is really waning. I've been to more NRL games than AFL games this year and that's a disgrace.

There's still too much confirmation bias in the umpiring and has been for ages. Media darling, big cub, benefit of the doubt far too often

Change the rules so as to eliminate grey areas as much as possible. Get rid of knee jerk rules eg nominating ruckmen. And FFS, pay the frees when they are there!

the Stand Rule

The stand rule is fine, it's just that the purpose of it has been eroded by letting players come from behind the mark & by letting others wonder through a rapidly diminishing protected area.

Of Course. There is a reason the AFL won’t put the Umps under the spotlight, it would put so many results in Jeopardy.
As others have said. The Stand rule is a pathetic joke.
Nominating a Ruckman is a joke. That is up to the players, not the Ump. If 3 players jump, then the Ump makes the call.
But if you had the Umpires required to front the Media after games, the standard would increase immediately

Well, they changed the interpretation of holding the ball a couple of weeks back & it seemed to be heading down the right path.

However it's reverting back pretty quickly (as usual) if the weekends games are the example.

What they are bagging is too blatant to ignore - unless you follow the team which benefits the most from these blatant shall we call them 'mistakes'?

You imply that is the case for the whole of each game. It just ain't so...

Sorta plausible deniability...   or... umm..  dumm de dummm....  ummm   yeah nah yeah...    all move on.

It's detestable

Cornes is right this time. Disgraceful job by the umpires gave Collingwood the win.

I’m just curious about why no others in the media will call this out

The umps are human and will make mistakes but there are too many howlers. And they are deciding some games. I’m not sure what the answer is.

An Umpire representative maybe interviewed 3-4 days later, but the heat has gone out of it by then.
They should be in front of Cameras an hour after the game.
Pay them well and make them fully accountable
