Watching this game and I know Richmond is no model but.....Newton is miles ahead of Riewoldt in the development of his game but Riewoldt is playing while we all wonder what's going on with juice. I have seen Newton play and he has got real talent. But Neale will not play juice as he does not judge him up to the mark. That's why your coaching days are over Daniher. We need to get someone who can recognize talent and develop it along with a consistent game plan. [censored] off Neale!!!

To be fair I wouldn't judge him purely on what's happening with Newton, judge him on what he has achieved over the last ten years.

Posted

Yeah. And as we keep saying there could be any number of other reasons why he's been kept back. You can't just select players PURELY based on form. There's a lot that goes into it...

That said, what annoys me is that Rewoldt looks a likely type and has been playing at an AFL club for less than a year. Newton has been around WAY longer... Read into that what you will...

Yeah.almost longest coach, no flag and no developmet, [censored] neale off and give the people he has no faith in a go...I do not know what Danners has againt newton but give the guy a break, he has talent ,is young and that is what we lack at the moment. Neitz, Robbo, Yze, Ward, Holland, Bizz, Junior, Brown, Wheatley, that's an ageing list, get on with it MFC, make the changes and lets get into the comp again in a real way..sick of the [censored]!

All this talk about Newton not getting picked is becoming a bit boring, I have no issue with Newton not getting picked this week or the past few weeks. It was the game against Sydney that I think he should have been picked, I thought he could of helped the team a little bit more than Garland did but it probably didn't lose us the game anyway. The fact is he didn't get picked and now that Robbo and Neita are back, I don't think he should be picked.

This is Newtons first season of regular game time in the VFL Seniors, I don't think it's harming him playing full games every week and being part of a winning culture down at Sandringham. It's better than him losing his confidence getting starved of the ball down in the forward line a Melbourne team that is losing every week.

And why even bother comparing Riewoldt and Newton? two totally different players with two completely different development paths to the AFL.

Posted

How can you compare players who between them have played one game, and after watching Tigers tonight Riewoldt showed he will probably be a player but he had no influence. When Newton does fianally get picked I want to see him contribute to a win and kick a few goals, and at the moment the match committee doesnt think the time is right.

So lets all go home and forget this season and the next few years because a kid(kids) are overlooked for a reason I'm searching for..I want to know, as a paying member, why they will not play Newton, Buckley etc. Who do you have as the next Robbo, Neitz?

Because the Melbourne Match Committee think they aren't ready to play AFL and they know these players, where as we are looking and guessing.

Danhier is ready to play the kids if he thinks they are capable. Here is something for you to think about, out of the 12 players drafted into the senior list in the last 3 years, 8 have made their debuts(Bate, Dunn, Warnock, Jones, Bartram, Frawley, Garland and Petterd), 4 are in the best 22(Bate, Dunn, Jones and Bartram) with another 2 by the end of the season could be as well(Frawley and Petterd). Should we play Newton, Neville and Buckley for the sake of saying 'were playing the kids' so Neale and the MFC have a ready made excuse every time we lose. For me I want us see us win every single week, I want Neale to pick the best side available every single week. We have a great track record over the last few years of first game players having a real impact on the games, I trust the match committee picking when the Players are ready to debut.

It may just be a simple case of maturity not equalling ability at this time. If that is the case and i suspect it is then the coaching panel are doing the right thing holding Newton back until he is ready.

Posted

The other thing with Riewoldt is he is not ready to be a permanent member in the line-up. I think he'll be up and down at least for the rest of the year. Hopefully when Newton debuts he is mature enough to be a regular.

Posted

Does anyone actually think that Newton will not get picked at some point in the near future?

Of course he will.

It is only a matter of time, and what little patience we have left.

And to be honest this is quite true.

We can [censored] and moan until the cows come home, but at the end of the day the Match Committee knows these players better, and have a far better understanding of whether these kids are actually ready for the (massive) step up, and therefore, maybe, instead of being massively critical (as Melon22 said we are guessing about his readiness for the game) of the fact Newton hasn't been selected, we could try and work out what their reasoning could be.

Now I totally agree with those that say he needs to be played to, at the very least, see what he is capable of (this is very important to the club) at AFL level, and as I said earlier, I would think that he should and will definitely play, and soon, but it will only happen when when they think he is ready to do so.

And maybe right now they don't. For whatever (unknown to those in here) reason.

i am 31 years old and only 69 kilos and i could have more of an impact in any match than miller has. ditch him and give someone a go even if its not their preferred position

i am really hoping we see newton soon...miller has struggled 3 weeks in a row now and i see no reason why a straight swap isnt on the cards...

Indeed.

Neitz, Robbo, Yze, Ward, Holland, Bizz, Junior, Brown, Wheatley, that's an ageing list, get on with it MFC, make the changes and lets get into the comp again in a real way..sick of the [censored]!

Wheatley is 26 iirc.

The fact is he didn't get picked and now that Robbo and Neita are back, I don't think he should be picked.
I'm not sure it's that black and white - I imagine his job would be a little easier if Neitz and Robertson are taking the #1 and #2 defenders, although it means they will be the go-to players.

I too think it's time for Miller to be dropped.

I'd bring in Bate for Miller if he's fit.

why garland before newton? he wouldn t have to do too much to make a more inspiring debut.

It's an interesting question, and considering we're not privy to the inner workings of the Club I imagine there may be some reasons that haven't been brought up here as to why Garland was picked over Newton..?

PS. I could have +5'd my post count if I replied like Rhino Richards :P

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
