This is quite interesting as Lever gets picked when underdone more than anyone I’ve ever seen.

In assuming he was really hurt by being dropped but it absolutely had to happen

Mcreery and Windhager would be ones I would chase.....Something would have to give from our end, but it is doable if we get nearly everything right around draft time.

Rate this idea, alos would look at Isaac Keeler from saints, as as forward/ruck option, I see he is unsigned and from what I have seen I think he has a lot of improvement in him.

Lots of teams were keen on Lever. He couldn't wait to get out.
After the Goody sacking, he's very keen to stay

If the club is smart they’ll push it from their end then, get a late first rounder for him while we still can

Yep. Just because lever wants to stay doesn’t mean we won’t shop

Fristch is also the one who has gone in the other direction.

Goodwin had no plans to lose him, things could change now

I'd be shocked if the new coach was willing to let Fritsch go given he's contracted, only 28, our forward line is so poor you can't get rid of one of our best goal scorers, Lever on the other hand is becoming impervious to needs

I'd pack Lever's bags and drive him to his new club free of charge if we could get a first rounder for him.

I'd happily move on Salem and Langdon for nothing as well to get their contracts off the books.

I think this year, in a weak draft, there'll be a club willing to give a late first for him, Dogs are desperate for defenders (missing piece), North would be an option, plenty out there i think

I've thought about Ollie Henry as a forward option, but he poses a major home sick risk (apparently left Collingwood because his home city of Geelong was too far away)

No home sick risk if the club where you are from don’t want you. Unless he wants a career change, he might just have to suck it up.

Is there anyone who kicks the ball out on the full as much is Langdon? It's wild.

It's almost impossible to believe it happens so regularly.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking he's far too limited to be considered the first-picked player he seemed to be under Goodwin.

Based on current state who do you guess would be the 3 most likely not to be there next year and the types of players we will look to target?

My money would be on Lever, May and Fritsch for shopping purposes
McVee and Rivers are hesitant to sign new deals but that isn't our desire
But remember this could all change with a new coach because the club hasn't decided on the direction yet without consultation of the new coach

Incoming - Goodwin wanted Worpel and Derksen committed to us 12 months ago. Doubt Worpel happens but Derksen coming in will allow us to shop defenders

Haven't heard of any other incomings

Do you have any insights on McVee you can provide? I'd even be interested on your own take.

It's been put to me at best it's a 50/50, and this was a few weeks ago. Personally can't see a signing happening now, unless of course it's still somewhat dependent on the coaching move/announcement.

It was strange to hear Jon ralph say on the mid week tackle last week that Judd doesn't want to leave Victoria. Surely he wouldn't look to move to another club in VIC? Hopefully he is optimistic a role change will happen with a new coach, if that truely is the reason he hasn't committed

I’d love to know how Worpel was going to help us?

More of the same, it’s bizarre

Moving Fritsch on would be madness.

Why the hell would Patrick Voss consider leaving Fremantle???

Not sure I mentioned that he would?

I’m saying he would be a good get.

Fritsch being named here as one to let go?? WHY?

We already struggle to kick a big enough score, and we're going to drop a guy still in his prime - one of our best kicks for goal (even if that's not really saying much)...?

I get it, some here don't think he's a big enough tackler or hard enough runner. Personally, I don't think that needs to be his strength. He never was any of those things. He's 2nd on our goalkickers list this year, and in my opinion will probably finish first, with close to 40. Which is about right, particularly given he was dropped a few times and had a rough first half of the year. I've been really happy with his last 1-2 months of footy. He looks more focused to me, and found his mojo. If he can carry that into 2026, with continued support from Melk (I hope for 1 more year, he looks fit to me!!) and JVR having the year he should have had this year plus one target forward.

We need more goals, not less. It's a keep for mine. Big keep.

Has Buckley been advised we'll be trading so many players we'll be fielding covid top ups in 2026?

TBF, that was Goodwin’s modus operandi.

We played our best footy in the era of Covid top-ups

It certainly was, just seems crazy that after the ‘22-‘24 seasons he was still keen on adding more of the same.

Well the club has said that the decision to rebuild or go for it will be discussed with the next coach. So Buckley will have a big say in any of these decisions

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
