waterman another key forward that we've chased in the last few years and not been able to get across the line:

  • ben brown - 3 year deal that really was washed midway thru the 2nd year

  • taylor walker - refused to leave adelaide for family reasons

  • tom lynch - felt he owed it to the tigs

  • jake waterman - used us to leverage a better deal at meth coke

plus the high level talent we've tried to add to the midfield / defensive run:

  • adam cerra - didn't have the assets to get the deal done

  • dan houston - spooked by our cultural fit / unwillingness to not use the pick that became langford

not being able to get more than 1 of these 6 targets has been a major issue

proper key forwards are so, so hard to find

They are so hard to find; issue being our recruiting team couldn’t find a key forward amongst the winners of the previous 50 years of coleman winners.. they’d either pick one and trade them off for scraps or go with another player who barely get 4 touches a game.

LDU was always a long shot to get.

We should of gone hard for his Norf team mate Nick Larkey a couple of seasons ago.

We did.

Not a trade target , but why we didn’t select Logan Morris in the draft a couple of years back when we are screaming out for key forwards that can mark and kick goals, I have no idea !!

Maybe he doesn’t like love? Because that’s what we are about

Didnt think about Touk.. great leader IMO. He played well against us but not sure how his performance stacks up against us. But given Suns are about to turn a corner, he would be hard to extract out of the place.

Brayshaw signed an extension already with Freo. LDU wont go from one basket case to another.

Unfortunately i see a club like ours as the perfect source for other clubs to pluck mature players out of. Fortunately for us, most players are all signed up so at least we will get compensated.

Agreed, though the amount of talent coming through gold coast Academy's mean Players like Touk, Flanders, etc Will get pushed out quicker; or at least pushed to the periphy. He's also a Vic boy after all. Plus I understand has leadership quality in spades.

If we lose 1 of Trac / Oliver I'd chase Touk for the quality experience and keep the other first round for the draft! Noting they are not looking for early picks; I'd offer late first round and change which they can convert into multiple picks (points).

Is there a tall there as well we could chase. Could King get pushed out with the quality they have coming through.

touk miller and sam flanders are two of gc17's best players, max king is their main target i50

they're not going anywhere

tim lamb trading away our first rounder in 2025 for the pick that became xavier lindsay is going to end up as the all time great draft swindle

peptides are looking at a top 3 pick, and that's if we can find a way to win some games - which doesn't look likely

They should have got rid of Petty last year when he had form and got something out of it, he looks lost out back, including slow and genuinely poor with skills, always blaming others when he’s caught out, and he can’t play forward either, as he’s not strong enough.

Think we lost a good opportunity to capitalize on his value

I’d love to know the decision making process that led to not doing it (hindsight a wonderful thing and all), same for Oliver and Petracca (notwithstanding the lack of suitable suitors apropos draft capital).

It’d be interesting to know who holds what level of sway in the process

Absolutely, let’s be real, last year he held a lot of value being able to be decent forward or behind. This year he is like most of the team, hopeless. They need make some smart decisions and get in some decent players who will last a few years.

Matt owies and Kennedy would have both been great for us.

Which part of Matt Owies would have been great for us?

His current stats this year is pox. Just another scrubber that would have been clogging up our list.

As usual, anyone that doesn't play for Melbourne is great.

oh great, mfcss law dictates he'll now kick 5 goals 1 from 6 kicks in a few weeks...

You don’t rate Lindsay then?

in the same way that i rated salem at the same age - he looks promising (better than langford, for mine), he has clean disposal, he runs to the right spots...

...but we're going to have given a helluva lot up for him at the end of the day so he better end up as a superstar and / or toby sinnema and kalani white become similar and we get them 'cheap'

we gave up a lot to get lindsay and tholstrup, so we need them both to become genuine a-graders not solid citizens

It’s going to get crazy now with trade targets

We have no appeal, no 1st round pick and not much coin.

Likely we will shop at the DFO for a bargain

just make sure it’s not the RSL (Campbell, Billings, Hunter) or the reject shop (Schache).

The fact that mfc management didnt see this alarming dropoff and traded first round tells me that they seriously over valued our list and ourcoach

Club has done a lot wrong

I have full confidence Lindsay will be an A grader, same with Langford and Windsor. Not as sure on Tholstrup, but he seems to be one of those outstanding personalities that all clubs need like an Angus Brayshaw.

At least we didn't trade our future first for Houston, I reckon that was on the cards until he walked away from us!

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
