Am I correct in assuming one of Tholstrup, Brown or Hore will be held over for tonight's game?

All three will be held over!

Surely there's a better alternative than playing this match on the same day as the senior match?

What's wrong with Sat or Sunday?

Day release from prison is easier one day of a week than 2 for those Richmond supporters

No longer on Kayo Buck.

Crank up your mobile or laptop and enjoy.

But don't try and cast it to your TV.  The AFL reckon that's a little too much luxury for us VFL riff-raff.

Whatever happened to Bell?  Had a reasonable season in 2021.  Stepped things up at times in 22 and a flag.

2023 unsighted from what i recall and now sits on the emergency list?

Played some games last year including being named on interchange bench in the VFL final against the Bulldogs. It was not an auspicious occasion. Suspect he is playing with Old Haileybury in the amateurs Section B.

Yeah that one.

You could screen mirror your phone to the TV but the quality will be garbage and you can't use your phone for anything else.

Not for me, I get really good quality. I suggest you at least give it a try.

Blame the Basket Case that is Smithys VFL

The clubs have a big say in VFL structure. I think it's time the AFL came clean on what if any vision they have for the competition. The reality is that as a competition it's dying. That in itself may be no problem. Several years ago I posted that it was not necessarily in the interests of the competition to increase crowd numbers as that would require new toilets, staffing etc.

The byes have also dramatically impacted any form of competitive integrity

Teams who have byes often arrange scratch matches against other clubs, as we did a week or so ago.  That can be very useful as you can trial things without compromising your VFL results. From an AFL perspective that could be very useful and of greater benefit than a VFL game.

And prepare yourselves for AFL byes, yes more of them, courtesy of some [censored] named Gil for introducing a 19th team and not replicating a team that already has Tasmanian connections.
The farcical scheduling will become even more inequitable.

Don't disagree but the logical conclusion of your proposition is scrap the VFL and replace it with closed door scratch matches.

That works fine for Melbourne teams but one of the reasons we have the present dysfunctional competition is that we admitted interstate clubs who were complaining that their local competition standard was inadequate

Why?  There's room for both, genuine competitive stuff and trail matches.  You need a genuine competitive competition, and players need to experience that and trial matches are self explanatory.  So, there is no logical conclusion to scrap the VFL in my proposition.

How about we have a dedicated AFL reserves competition? If that's too expensive then at least have a Victorian Reserves League - and let the standalone VFL teams play in their own separate  competition.

The Victorian Reserves League could play all their games on a Sunday afternoon, (allowing for emergencies from Thur-Sat games to play most games), and have extended benches so that players can be better managed (eg someone returning from injury might just play 3/4 of a game etc).

Reserves as the curtain raiser to the seniors worked for a very long time, and is fondly remembered.  It still works for nearly every non-AFL competetion in the nation.

Really looking forward to this

Keeping a close eye on McAdam, Hunter Hore and Fullerton

Turnover gave them that on a dinner plate.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
