I agree, throw himself recklessly at the high ball get his knees up high and into the opps, worst effect is it puts some opps on the ground and pushes the ball front and centre.

If only the coaches would tell him that is what they want from him. If they are telling and he is not listening, then that culture, brand and Melbourne way doesn't work with him.

Take a leaf out of the book of Bowser.

Unfortunately some players are like that, Watts was another, you cannot instil that behaviour into someone unless they want to.

I believe Cadman signed a contract extension - having seen him last night he is definitely going to be a very good footballer - clearly not ready last season but he now looks like he belongs - may not kick bags this season but probably doesn’t need to with Hogan, Brown , Greene , Daniels

He will be one of better forwards in the comp before too long IMO

Look Mc Adam when fit might help with the problem he can take a mark and leads ok from what I have seen of him, the problem being is the how we bring it into the forward line and space given.

Just throw someone forward. It's worked in the past. Even for a quarter or a half:

Ray Biffen

Sean Wight

Neita

Petty

Steven May is the man.

Then throw someone, anyone back:

JVR, Fullerton.

 

We have to get creative.

Personally I’m a bit surprised we haven’t seen May forward at least in short bursts 

He does read the play well which is very important if you want to be a good forward

Plenty on here keep asking why Stafford is still the forward coach for a couple of years now.

I suggest pretty much everyone on here knows there is a problem.

The coach knows it, the FD knows it.

As for the headline about us refusing to address it, I would say that's a crock.

We've tried a raft of things to address it, some have been successful for short periods, others not.

Injury & unavailability has been a big part of the problem...along with unavailable options of players to poach from elsewhere.

That is not refusing to address the problem.

It's been a problem for two years the coach admits it, so tell me how they have tried to make it work when you have a game plan that's down the line play and contest to contest.

Demon3165 most on this site understand that we have a forward 50 connection problem. In the last two years we have run out of key forwards leading into our finals campaigns with devastating results, however what hurt us the most was goal kicking accuracy. This year we have bought in McAdam, Fullarton, Billings to provide a different skill mix and help improve connection and to provide Max with a chop out. But we have started the year without Petty, Brown, McAdam and Fullarton due to injury and Kozzie due to suspension. Only time will tell whether the addition of this group will help us improve connection But I would bring Fullarton or Verrall into the team immediately and send Josh back to Casey.

Lets start with McAdam, like he's not in our side now he spent a lot of time injured at Adelaide.

Ok, we've been through this a lot but you don't want to believe it.

We all know there's a problem, the coach, the FD, the fans, the media...

...but if we don't have the forwards it's no point opening the game up for opposition rebound.

It's the cattle...you can't put out a forward line of Schache, Chandler, Laurie & Spargo and expect big scores.

Petty straightens us up, McAdam will be a help and I reckon Tholstrup will be a beauty.

Kozzy cost us big time the other night.

The game plan will change when we get the forward mix right. Bringing Salem into the midfield mix will also be a big help, but again injury (Bowey) might torpedo this. I sure hope we persist.

We're not refusing to acknowledge there is a problem, as you say Goody himself acknowledges it to the point of boredom.

Agree with this, we might not have the best forward 6 in the league but let’s see if we can get all of JVR, Petty, McAdam, Fritsch and Kozzie (and perhaps Fullerton) playing together before we judge it for the year

You could put Jbrown in our forward line and he couldnt kick the goals.

It is a system problem then a personnel problem

We should be isoating fritta and playing to his strengths as our best fwd

We have a great forward coach at melbourne

Yes tho it’s on the FD and Goody. Can’t understand his continued support of the Club it’s got to change as has our luck with injury etc .

I believe they all have their strengths that the structure doesn't cater to.

Schache can mark well when given clear air and is a good kick. Needs the others to kick well to him and for the halves to pushing be away from goal.

Chandler will hit the ball at pace, manoeuvre in tight areas and when 'on', snaps well. Ball has to hit the ground or a chaos delivery, for him to come into his own. 

Laurie is more of a mid, though works best when the stoppages occur, powerful through the hips and will bring others into play.

Spargo is a pressure forward, though if they get the ball into his hands outside the 50, he can hit up players. Bombing it in, then he is focused on the defender and not creating.

Sorry 'kev', but you just can't run a forward line like that at AFL level and expect a positive result against good teams.

But thats our smalls minus Kossie. What about our talls?

I have been remincising about our smash and dash days in 2018. Was it really that bad a tactic?

Kept the pressure on the oppo and skills werent required then either

Let the opps defend grass by zone, push everyone out and get our best kicks to deliver with precision. The congestion in there is the last few seasons strategy (Though it allows us to hold the ball in).

I believe we should congest the wings and our back area, and open our forward area, at least sometimes during the game. Open forward area allows us leads to the flanks and ability to get it over the back.

Another kpf would take pressure off JVR but ultimately if the delivery forward continues to be rubbish, then having Petty there won't make much difference.

I think Tracc's burst out of the centre and McVees beautiful pass to Fritta were the only two clean entries into our forward line all night that I can recall. 

There seems to be no clear system. The only change I could see was that instead of long bombs, occasionally there were low hard kicks delivered in. But.... Still to a pack of players.

We have to try something different with what we have up forward.

Adapt or die

The talls are too one dimensional. Straight line leads, no repeat efforts or coordination between them. The three talls could all be moving in opposite directions, then going again, making space and causing the opps to be spinning their heads in confusion. The static set up we have at the moment is a defenders dream.

    UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft.     Demonland Trackwatchers ventured down to Gosch's Paddock for the final week of training for the 1st to 4th Years until they are joined by the rest of the senior squad for Preseason Training Camp in Mansfield next week.     A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers braved the rain and headed down to Gosch's paddock to bring you their observations from the second day of Preseason training for the 1st to 4th Year players. DITCHA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I attended some of the training today. Richo spoke to me and said not to believe what is in the media, as we will good this year. Jefferson and Kentfield looked big and strong.  Petty was doing all the training. Adams looked like he was in rehab.  KE
