I haven't seen the full team yet but is it correct that the announcement will include the sub as part of the team, rather than having a player "promoted" from the emergencies just before the game? If so, that's a significant improvement.

On that point, I'd be looking for a "runner" as the sub. I expect Windsor will play somewhere around mid-60% of game time. Oliver may also be slightly underdone (he would normally play around 90-92% of game time but may play less than that in the first 2-3 weeks). Just because of these two reasons, I'd like another runner to be available to share the load.

Yes that’s right LDvC, 5 man bench with the sub named from there an hour before gametime. It's a good move overall because the team does have 23 players, it's less good for fantasy footy though

Thanks very much for sharing this article.

How good to hear a positive story in the media.

Max is a captain that really goes the whole nine yards.

Clayton has obviously been doing life pretty tough at times by the sound of it. This makes his efforts to share time with fans at training show what a true champion he really is.

Watch out Sydney.

There’s an old fashion footy term known as “ the one-eyed supporter” . I image everyone knows what that means and their characteristics do not need explaning. All clubs have them. Loyalty on steriods. Their club and their players could never, ever do anything wrong.  Joffa @ Collingwood comes to mind. Many Demonland members do not like the Joffas from other clubs and are quick to criticise them.  They think, take your eye patch off.

Just my opinion , but there are too many Red and Blue Joffas on this site.

Minus the kiddy fiddling I hope. Can we leave his name off this board in future.

Has it been a challenging off season? Yes absolutely.. has it been the worst in our time? Nope, we've gone through the whole Troy Broadbridge death, tanking saga and Jim Stynes death in one hit which I think was more significant then what we've just experienced.

In my opinion the club has handled the Clayton Oliver situation incredibly well and they need a pat on the back for that. Does that mean we need all articles out there saying what a great job the club had done? Nope, i would rather be winning games and Oliver playing a big part in that. Results will speak for itself.

Anyway enough of that, let's smash those Swannies!

Agree totally with the poor me attitude

Team selection

we have 3 new players. But only 2 without senior experience.
the selection of Billing’s is not a problem

but

we have 2 total newbies

Caleb Windsor early selection last year, surely it is only clubs in dire straits that pick their first selection in the opening game.  Or is he that good.  Why did he not go earlier. Maybe JT has pulled another.

Blake Howes been in our club for a year or so , we can assume natural improvement,

good luck both,

Sheet , I hope these two go OK, and Billings has a good one,  Go Dee’s

Early first round selection, then selected to play first round ,  that’s putting CW in very rare company.  Who needs the number one pick.  Gobsmacked. !!

we moved up a couple of spots, I wonder who first picked him out of the pool of players.

On visiting a young fan in hospital:

'This is the side of Oliver we don’t see, but Oliver never turns down the chance to give back outside club hours. Like most AFL players, Oliver doesn’t feel the need to publicise these moments.'

I reckon certain Collingwood player might learn something from Clarry.

The club and supporters have been crying out for a quick ball carrier who can kick a goal - from exposed form Caleb fills a need we haven't had so I have no issue playing him. Lachie Hunter is a solid player but he sure doesn't have the pace of our new #6 so looking forward to seeing what he can do on that wing

We've now moved into favouritism.  I thought this would occur much sooner after the Swannies injuries over the weekend.  No Parker, Mills or Adams is a big loss.

How dare you compare anyone on this site with that person?!

I’m the first to admit I’m one-eyed and I follow our team with blind devotion. Loyalty on steroids as you put it. But to be compared to that person is extremely insulting and unacceptable.

If you wanna make your point it would be infinitely more sensitive for you to pick someone else for comparison.

Clarrie didn’t. Tracc didn’t. The Club didn’t. Naturally Clarrie can’t scratch his arze without someone in the media reporting on it.

His manager did.

To whom?

Actually, don’t bother answering that question. It doesn’t matter. The point is Clarrie did an awesome thing, one of many awesome things.

I think we should be incredibly proud of the way the club has handled this off season, it's been a mess, and some of the interesting articles coming out of the herald sun haven't helped, but i feel we have shown our culture is strong and we're ready for the season.

on a side note, it sounds like Clarry has been to hell and back so for him to tick all the boxes and be selected for round zero is an enormous accomplishment and something i hope he's very proud of.

Got the same syndrome ... new Sony TV, new Flip6 speakers that just might be able to achieve a Ch7 commentary upgrade, hot dogs, rolls, Dijon mustard and Rosella dead horse, black pepper. Raring to go!

We provide the Swans supporters a perfect reason and opportunity to spend all of Thursday morning in Church, praying for the impossible, atoning for their onfield sins and promoting their umpire preferences over the past decade, bearing false witness to their onfield talents and for injuring key players on the cusp of the season to be. Dees by 70 points, no wuz.

Same as last year really, where we went in with Hunter and first gamers McVee & Laurie

Your post just cost me a new TV i think. Great idea. No better time of year to level up.

It's a wonder The Hun didn't go with a headline of "Oliver in hospital again!"

I'm with you and most others here WCW. Can we just get behind one of the greatest players this club has seen and ignore the disrespected muck raking media outlets.

If we start putting an * against any good deed he does then we sink to their level.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
